Well that's exactly why your innocent office workers use Windows, while your sysadmins handle the Linux servers
On topic, I highly doubt any business will upgrade to Vista. They're quite content with 2000 and in some rare cases XP. Vista offers no improvements and many serious flaws.

This however is true, even if Vista did look worthwhile I wouldn't touch it for at least 6 months to a year.

You can run MS Word and Excel on Linux.
As for Vista, don't upgrade to it for gaming, at least not any time soon. You get a major performance hit, and I got horrible artifacting in Oblivion (faces wouldn't texture correctly at all!) and 3dmark2006 wouldn't render correctly either. EVE seemed to run fine, but slower than under XP. --- Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail. - Emerson |

Upgrade to Vista for Gaming when you get a new Machine to use all it's goodies. Most users will only ever need Home Premium and $160 isn't that bad for a OS such as Vista. Don't like the price? Go make a movie on a Apple (which they are very good for) or go play with Linux and spend hours upon hours trying to get it working. (took me 3 days to get Fedora working)
Each OS has it's uses and each has it's user base. :)

Almost certainly your graphics drivers, if it's a nvidia card then their beta vista drivers are terrible, expect the release drivers to be purring like a kitten.

No business should be running anything other than XP (if they go for Windows as most do) as MS have pulled all support for older OS.

2000 is still supported, since it uses the same kernel as XP, and they use the same driver base. But anything else is not (95, 98, 98SE, ME *shudder*, XP, XP SP1). ---

Yeah, I do. Newbies talk about how there are "redeeming factors" in vista when the best feature of the entire operating system is that you can use FRAPS on 2D applications .
Nevermind the massive DRM, horrible bugginess, ridiculously inefficient code, and wasteful memory management... Vista is the longest suicide note in history. The only business that will adopt it are those that are handed it on a silver platter with a lot of bribes.

im gonna try my best not to sound like a walking 'nix advert here. but here goes.
only people that have never even thought about using "linux" before will automatically assume its hard, only for power-nerds etc etc and it simply isnt true. its all down to the choice of your distro. there are some things that are actually pretty damn simple on linux, just the idea of having to use a command line to do ANYTHING on a computer nowadays tends to make peoples heads explode. just to point out, i am not a pwoer nerd, nor do i know much about linux at all.
However, with the right choice of distro (and the right choice of hardware i might add) i was able to get everything up and running on OPENSuSE 10.0 (now 10.2). this included graphic card drivers (nvidia, of course. ill admit that ive NEVER EVER been able to get ATI drivers working on 'nix, ever.) media codecs such as music/video etc, a bunch of native nix versions of games (UT99, 2004, warsow, enemy territory) and even EVE itself via Cedega (which at the time was pre-dragon code, i havent tested it since). Fedora, SuSE, ubuntu blah blah all these are good if you actually have a slight clue in what you're doing, but for those who are complete and utter linux noobies there are distros that will auto-detect and install everyone during the installation process, including ATi drivers and other propietry stuff like the multimedia codecs.
the best one of these was XandrOS OCE but is probably discontinued now cos xandros want you to pay for it nowadays (bah). if you can lay your hands on an older version (say, 3.02 the one i use/have) then score. a newer one (and rather excellent one) is Freespire. this is the most newbie friendly distro ive found so far and basically does everything for you. useful for me until i figure out how to install a radeon 9600 on SuSE10.2 .

I have been running a 'nix machine constantly for the last 3 years or so. I love the speed compared to the dog slow os that microsoft spits out. With some of the more "user" friendly OSs a potential consumer could install an OS without ever understanding wtf they are doing and get along ok (understanding that they dont know wtf they are doing in winblows anyway).
Just got finished getting a class I really needed for college, and I would have never gotten through on windoz because the networking layer suckes and is still sitting there trying to get through while linux is having fun on the page.
People try to compare running windoz with stuff like running gentoo (I still maintain several boxes) which requires days of configuration and compiling, but it is worth it for certain tasks. I am running fedora on my desktop right now, installed, done. Shoot I can run eve easily with wine.
Comparing installation times is pretty much bogus. I would rather compare installation times for needed program x.
Windoz: scour the internet for said package and pray it is easy to install and not virus laiden
Gentoo: emerge x ; chances are its in the repository and if it isnt an ebuild takes all of 15 seconds to make
Fedora: yum x ; maybe not in the default repo, but rpm files are easy to find and install
One of my major gripes is the horrible drivers in winblows. Sure linux isnt perfect, but the drivers that are there works great. Windows has the worst wireless implementation I have ever seen. Wireless will work fine on both osx and linux in the same room, but windoz will totally fail and disconnect randomly, and always fall with the wireless phone.
I cant wait for the day microsoft dies, I will celebrate by removing winblows from as many computers as I can with cat /dev/urandom > /dev/hda --WTB AVITAR--

Lunix. Tried it. More than one distro. Didn't like it. Didn't even figure out I was already connected to the net.
Vista Enterprise x64. I have a legit copy (working from home / out of hours etc) at home to a dual boot PC. Works great. Loaded all the drivers on its own. No crashes. Runs every program i have loaded so far.
