It seems like all the fitting specs I see for ships make use of blasters, but no railguns. Are blasters really that much better than railguns, even with the severe range limitations? I understand that a large part of blasterboating is being able to use a MWD, but I don't even have the skill requirements for one of those, yet.
I was thinking that it would be reasonable to equip my soon-to-be Myrmidon with railguns so that it would be able to keep its distance from enemy targets and still be able to use its full firepower of drones and turrets. To me, there's nothing wrong with this kind of setup, but the veteran ship-fitters seem to think otherwise since I have yet to see fitting specs for a Myrmidon that uses railguns...

There is no better or worse to either of those. There is only "better" for the given situation you expect to face and how you like to fly your ship. Some situations call for one, other situations are better with the other. Just depends...
Blasters are high damge, short range weapons. Rails are lower damage and longer ranged (than blasters). Best thing to do is try them both out as you can (fly against easy belt rats in hi sec while testing then keep notching up the difficulty so you don't lose your ship).

Most of the Ships and Modules forum is for PvP, and most of your non-sniper PvP is going to take place at very close distances, which is why everybody is so fond of blasters, autocannons, and pulse lasers. That extra range doesn't mean anything when you're still trying to get within 7.5km to warp scramble your enemy.

As a carebear and a mission runner, I rarely use short-range tactics. I snipe with rails or arties b/c there are some missions that contain rats who cannot hit from more than 20 km. Sure it takes a bit longer to complete the missions, but there is less maintenance required during the fights. It is nice to simply watch the rats miss continuously b/c its set-up cannot compromise yours. IMHO, it is a bit more realistic also....

One nice thing to keep in mind is that for Tech 1 stuff, railguns and blasters use the exact same skills. So it's not like you're training one set instead of another.

Yeah, for PVP, you need to prevent your target from just warping away, and the range for warp scrambling is 20km or 7.5km (for 2 strength), so people fit short range weapons.
Of course, you could have a team, a few tacklers to dash in and warp scramble, and the big guns sitting at range with rails, that works too.
For PVE, with rats you can warp in at long range with rails, but in some missions, when you use the gates, they dump you right in the middle of the NPC's, and typical NPC behavior is to immediately make a bee-line for you and orbit you at whatever range is good for the NPC (some are under 5 km, others are 20km or so). So, again, short-medium range guns are slightly better suited.

Since the myrmidon has no bonus to hybrid weapons i slapped 4 720 ARTY cannon on it on it. only cuz they have better punch at range than rails. the myrm for me is a range drone boat, so i stay at range and let my cannon, and drones do my talking. Since most gallente battlecruiser pilots are used to blasters on a bruitix, and blasters are the pvp winner vs rail the threads will slant that way. Yet if your gonna go pvp on a myrm, why not just slap 6 med nos on it?
Either way you'll want to fight how you fit, so go rail and stay long, or blaster an close( but isn't that what the bruitix is for? ) it is hard to fit 6 250's though, so maybe 5 and a drone link? What goes here? |

Most solo and small gang PvP takes place at <20 km. Blasters\AC\Pulses put out way way more damage than their long range counterparts. For larger gang pvp rails work well since alot of time you dont have time to get close before the target dies.
For PvE rails are better since deadspace doesn't let you use mwd and you don't need to get within 20km to scramble the npc's -----

This is why caldari ships are considered to be good for ratting and mission running. They specialize in long-range weapons, missiles and railguns. An NPC is dumb. It will fly and shoot at you until it is dead. Real players will simply warp away if they are in trouble and their warp drives are not scrambled.
All basic and named warp disruptors have a range of 20km. Faction warp disruptors go up to 40km range, but the prices for these items are high accordingly. For example, Shadow Serpentis disruptor gives you range of 26 km and costs about 80 mil. Domination disruptor gives you a range of 30 km and costs over 150 mil. Webifiers work only within 10km range, unless once again you want to spend a lot of money on buying faction ones or flying Minmatar recon. Target painters, ECM, and sensor dampeners have optimal range of about 20-25km, so you would want to stay within that range. But I would say that the limiting factor here are the warp disruptors.
There are specilized sniper setups in which you would hope that you can take out a ship in one shot, before it aligns to warp away. However, since you can only place a few shots before the ship gets out of there, you will be able to take out smaller ships only, ones that have fewer hit points and low resistances.
