If I cancel my account do my characters (along with my money and ships) remain incase I want to play again at a later date? Or is my account wiped and when i start again ill have nothing?

Your account is kept for for six months I do believe.

I do believe that currently your account is kept forever.
Unless they have changed it without notifying anyone. Or if I'm not remembering correctly.
But I seem to recall Pann or someone else last spring saying that accounts are never deleted.
They do have Windows2000 (or maybe they upgraded to 2003) on the game and database servers, so if they are using NTFS it probably compresses unfrequently used data, so keeping accounts is hardly any cost for them, and the happiness of people who come back is more important than a bit of disk space.
So if someone confirms otherwise with a dev or dev quote, I'm pretty sure this is the case. (If it says anything in the EULA about it, I didn't see any, it really doesn't matter, because CCP doesn't really follow it anyway)

We have never set an exact time limit, but account information takes up very little storage space, so we estimate that we will retain that data for at least six months - if not longer. If the day came that we decided to wipe inactive accounts, we would announce it in advance. However, it would be posted as news on the site, not sent as a private e-mail to you or a personal phone call from Hellmar or anything, so you'd have to keep an eye out occasionally to stay abreast of developments like that.

I remember the outcry when SWG announced they would only keep characters for 3 days after account cancellation.

I was hapy to find out that after many months of inactivity my characters were safe and sound and still had all of their ships and equipment!
