Like all computers mine seems to get slower and slower the longer it functions after windows has been installed, so I'd like to know, what tips and tricks to you use to keep that fresh install feeling on your computers?
Obviously I can reinstall windows but that's a hassle, do any of you use any tricks or third party tools that keep your system running for longer until you get fed up and wipe the whole thing?

Defragmenting helps a lot. Also I run two hard drives, one is only 40 gig the other is 200. The 40 gig one hosts nothing but Windows and related apps (like Visual Studio, MS Office, Opera, Photoshop etc). The 200 gig drive hosts everything else, any little program I download, any game, any movie or music etc. This way the OS always has quick access to anything it needs on its own seperate drive and doesn't get bogged down with junk to sort through, while the other drive takes care of everything else (where it doesn't matter so much if it gets slowed down a bit).
Do a Run msconfig once in a while too and uncheck anything in the Startup tab that you don't need running all the time, a lot of stuff sneaks its way in there and opens itself every time you start Windows then does nothing but take up memory.
Doing these things I've been running on the same install of Windows since the EVE beta

Also be sure to:
- Swab your RAM every morning - Ensure your bit bucket is emptied regularly - Change your liquid crystal every 10,000 hours
(Oh, and make sure your task tray doesn't stretch half way across your monitor without which you have a few GB of RAM.)

Couple of things:
Defrag is good, make it a friend. Also, power off the system, and get a vacuum to it - dust causes lack of airflow, causes heat build up, causes some CPUs to go a little sluggish. Keep the fans clear at all times too, and dust it out once in a while. Reg cleaners are good if you DO install and uninstall. Don't install crap you don't want. Run spyware and malware and hijackware removal tools CONSTANTLY, as well as anti virus.
So here are some tools:
List of defrag and HDD utilites use at your own risk though. Another one called Perfect Disk 8 Also check for disk keeper as well...
Google for Registry mechanic - even older versions (4 etc) work OK, but get as late a one as you can find, downloads.com HAD one for a while.
This link should see you right though.
For AV, either use Avast or AVG. For Spyware, I recommend eWidow and Adaware.
There are a LOAD of other malware and spyware removal tools around too, so do a google and see what you find.
Lastly, there are a couple of good sites, on PC optimizing for gamers to follow, that will help as well.
Hope that helps.

Don't pirate.
My compy was fine for about three years, but then one wrong thing happened and now a bunch of my stuff is broken. Buying a new compy later this month.
Also, make sure your house is grounded. That kind of thing will mess up your PC if it isn't. --------

You guys have any suggestions on how to flush the lines of a water cooled system? Aside from adding distilled water to it. Basicly some algae has started to grow in the lines which is reducing the flow of coolant. I've flushed the lines with distilled water (did that 8 times) and that's helped a good bit but it's still not as good as when I first installed it. (5 months ago)

Make a clean copy of windows once. Copy it do a DVD. When windows gets slower, copy it back.
(or just reinstall it :P)

Kind of an old topic....but the servers are slow coming up today so...
Along with all the usual virus/spyware/defrag utilities, run a registry cleaner. It's been my experience that over time windows will acquire broken registry entries even without installs and deinstalls. Sometimes it comes from changing settings. There are other causes that are still a mystery to me, but a registry cleaner is the missing link for a lot of people (even IT "professionals" around where I live) who are otherwise in good shape as far as maintenance, but still can't keep windows running fast as an install ages.

Flush it with bleach. If that doesn't kill the algae then you have a problem. If it can't take bleach then go for 95% ethanol (denatured) if you can find it.

Ooh, thanks for the tip. Got any suggestions for one before I go download a 'free' registry cleaner that screws my computer up and pastes Viagra adverts all over my desktop?
I got my sig snipped again. Can someone make me a new one? |

I've known a few people who love overclocking to get the best performance out of their pc etc etc. something they have all done is cut a big hole in the side of their case, put in a clear window, and put lots of coloured lights in side. im sure that must be the secret to better performance.

Heartily endorse a registry cleaner.
Just this weekend I had all sorts of problems with BSOD's CTD's etc and a quick sweep with Registry Mechanic fixed it

Always hibernate, never reboot.
My system has been running windows for nearly a year now, and it takes an age to start and get all my background crap running, but once it gets going it's fine, so I just hibernate it. -

And that's the reason it takes forever to start up
1) Don't install crap. 2) Adaware & Spybot Search & Destroy: run it at least once a week 3) Antivirus: McAffee or AVG (NOT Norton) 4) Read point 1) again! 5) Clear all your computer's vents of dust. NO, not with a wet cloth! _______________

JKDefrag is good. No frills, but it's quick and works.
Raxco defrag is the best but it isn't freeware so I naturally won't use it

Originally by: Ione Hunt 1) Don't install crap.
1. Pay attention to your background programs, some are well written, but some come from software houses with crappy programmers. One difference between the two is the speed of the code. It's best to run as little as possible. If you take a screenshot of your systray and a short description of what each program there does, we can help out.
2. No spyware, nor browser toolbars or extra frilly stuff
3. Here's a personal favorite: right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Settings under Performance heading. Then click on Adjust for best performance, but recheck these boxies, but maybe not the last one depending on your preferences.
Cheers
