Hello all, I have a quick question about salvaging. I looked in the online Item DB and since I'm at work I can't check the game.
Is there an actuall skill you can train for salvaging that requires you to buy the book?

I just finished getting Survey III this morning. Now I'll get Salvaging up to level 3. It'll come in handy for those Serpentis wrecks. I heard it was a good way to get some really good stuff.

What category is the salvage I module under? I have the skill but I don't see the module.

EDIT -- BTW, although you'll find the Salvager this way in the market ingame, it appears that the Item Database, like many basic elements, has not been updated to show it.

What difference does it make if you learn 'salvaging' beyond level 1?

Increases the chance of getting a 'successful salvage attempt' result, meaning overall salvaging takes fewer cycles = less time needed to salvage the same number of wrecks.

Thank you. Could you or someone else tell me the chances of a successful salvage and how the chances increase with each level. Even with level 1 it doesnt seem to take all that long, although I've only been salvaging a couple of times, I'd guess that it is around a 1 in 6 chance.

a tractor beam (for ships you destroy) and multiple salvager modules (I use 3) make salvaging a lot easier and quicker. I find a dstroyer is a good salvager in high security space because there is room for a gun or two, too. I have salvaging 3 as I recall and occasionally hit ships like dread guristas that I I cannot salvage because they are too hard for me - think I need to increase a skill somewhere but not sure which - probably salvaging. I did a bit of salvaging last night and I got a lot of crap stuff. My skill is only at level II right now and I just wanted to try it out. I'm in an 0.6 area and I get stuff like contaminated fuel and tripped chips and such. I sure hope it gets better. As for the tractor beam, it reels things in so slowly that it really not worth the time unless you use it to get you mining cans.

All that crap stuff is used in the construction of rigs. The value of the items may vary but it is not necessarily garbage.
Tractor beams are a lifesaver! Trust me, as someone who spent years playing without them they are fantastic. When using a tractor have it pull in one wreck while you drive to a second. Time saver right there. Ideally make yourself a Loot Monkey. My personal favorite is a Destroyer (Catalyst in my case) with 4xTractors and 4xSalvagers. It has the speed and decent cargo to make short work of a pile of wrecks. I have the tractors pull in 4 cans, set salvagers working on those wrecks while I drive towards more loot and then rinse and repeat. (NOTE: I finish missions then get Loot Monkey before ending the mission and clear out the loot)
Trust me when I say this method is FAR more efficient than driving about in your cruiser or battleship nabbing one wreck at a time.

My tractor beam was reeling my can in at a very slow speed. Can that be improved? I'll hold on to that stuff for now.

Tractor pulls at 500m/s.... but if you are flying away from the target at 300m/s, the tractor beam only works at a net speed of 200m/s.
Also, if things are between you and the can/wreck (like 'roids), the wreck will go around them and take more time. -----------------------------------------------

I was stationary when I did it. Maybe a little more than a 2km away from the can. I got tired of waiting for it to come over but it was close enough for me to put my ore into it.

Edited by: Billy Sastard on 10/01/2007 21:26:40 Tractor beams do not pull the can/wreck right to your ship, the tractor beam pulls the items to within range to open. I think this is what you were describing. It would only take a second or so for the beam to pull something from 2km into 'activation range' (< 1500km). -=^=-

I was thinking of being trained as a salvager, but it's a major purchase for me right now (on my 10th day of EVE). Where do you find the salvagable ships? Can you salvage the NPC pirate ships that you kill? Would one piece of salvage equipment be worth it. I only have 1.6 million ISK right now.

You can salvage any of the wrecks from destroyed ships. It is very possible for a new character to start salvaging and make a good amount of ISK to start. -=^=-

I was wrong about the tractor beam speed. It only pulls slow if the object is already in range to be opened. But from a distance it does pull very fast. Now when I "jet-can" mine I don't have to fly my Iteron over to it. when I come out of warp in the field I just use the tractor beam to pull the can over to me. It works out very well.

i just have to ask, you know that salvaging only gives items you can use to build wrecks. And that you can still loot items that were fitted or in cargo from wrecks without salvaging them right? __________________________ Why babelfish is bad mmm k "which the night do not expect that it calls the primary education before becoming deformed inside" |

Well, I know about the cargo loot, but I didn't know that the salvaging only gave you stuff for construction. No one ever mentioned that. I thought it got you those "million ISK" parts to sell that people keep talking about?

Not all NPC ship give you salvage at this time, some factions do and some dont. Rogue drones dont give salvage either. But PC ship do give salvage.
