If I buy a ship from another station how do I get it back to my "home station" without leaving the one I flew to pick it up in behind? Must be something simple I'm missing.

Buy a shuttle where you are and fly it to pick up your new ship. Then either sell, refine or leave behind the shuttle and fly back the other ship. Shuttles are cheap (9,000 ISK), require no skills to pilot and are fast (500m/sec + 25m/sec per level of Navigation). They only have limited cargo space (10m¦) and no modules though, so are mostly just a little taxi.
You can also transport smaller ships in the holds of larger ships if they are repackaged. A frigate takes up 2500m¦ volume, so you'd need at least an Industrial ship or larger to transport one. Industrials can't be trained on Trial accounts.
Also, your home station is basically where you keep the most stuff. You can keep items and/or ships at every NPC station if you wish, but that does get a little annoying after a while. Personally I've been unable to keep less than 15-20 stations worth of junk! heh -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | How to Build from a BPO |

You could also just eject from your ship in-station and fly to your new ship in your pod. The speed does not really matter with Warp-to-0. Just dont sit still for too long, some suicide ganker might take you for a free pod kill. -------------------------------------------------- EvE is a sand box. Build a sand castle and beg someone to come destroy it just so you can have the fun of building it up again.

I do that in my pod all of the time.
Make sure to put an intimidating name on the pod.

You could also through up a courrier contract, with the collateral equal to the ship value. Though you will have to offer a decent reward, and you may have to wait a couple of days.
Shuttle is the best option. -----------------------------------------------

Nah, with warp to 0, your pod is actually better, as it warps instantly where a shuttle still has to turn and warp... You also don't have to mess around with either leaving shuttles all over the place, or selling the shuttle when you get your new ship. The only place I think that this would not be true would be in 0.0 where there is the chance of running into a hostile bubble on a gate, in which case, even with a shuttle, you are most likely screwed anyway -=^=-

You can repackage the shuttle and bring it back in your new ship cargo hold.

A pod warps at 3au/second
a shuttle warps at 6??au/second..
= faster for the longer warps.. -----------------------------------------------

If you don't want to buy a shuttle, and don't want to warp around in your pod, pick up a free Noob Frigate. Leave your ship, and pod over to another station in your system where you don't have any ships in the hanger. You'll be given a free noob frigate, which you can then just trash at the remote station when you pickup your other ship.
You don't have to have been recently destroyed, you just need to dock your pod at a station where you have no ships.
