Edited by: Falcione on 10/01/2007 20:25:39 I've been thinking about how to get more people to test out the new stuff before it hits Tranquility and people start whining about it because no one tested it.
What if Singularity (essentially a neutered version of EVE) was available for the public to kick around in. They can get the client and just kick around in it. I'm sure it would drastically spike the number of people that operate on the server. Of course there are pros and cons.

I think he means to the wide public, not just eve players.
Bad idea, it would lag like crazy and you would never get on.

Singularity: This server is now public. It runs the Dragon branch. Currently player accounts and ISD have access to this server.
Does this mean that only people who have paid for an account get access? That's not quite what I had in mind. Becuase then, they might as well jsut play the real EVE and forget about testing. ----------- My Bio in Progress Prologue / CH.1 |

I dont think its a good idea. The real Eve gives a much better first impression than the test server does. Logging in and training skills, buying stuff for 100 isk and then getting blown up will most likely seem very meaningless to people. Also you would only have a lot of newbies flying around, with noone experienced around. Who will they learn from? And no player corps with real goals since its only a test server.
Naah, playing around on TQ with a trial account is much better for them.

But the people that aren't committed to the real EVE can just kick around in Sing and have their little fleet battles and help load test and what not.
Though...it would probably end up like the WoW version of EVE lol. ----------- My Bio in Progress Prologue / CH.1 |

You think TQ's laggy? You haven't seen **** if you think they'll open up singularity to non-paying customers where it has every item for sale for 100 isk =/ -----

Only paying subscribers to EvE can login to Singularity, and quite a few people actually use it. Note that not only is it useful to look for bugs, but also to test out new ships and ship fittings, etc. The fact that you can find anything on the market for a negligible price (100isk, if I remember correctly) makes it specially appealing when you want to try out any gear you could possible imagine in any ship you can pilot.
CCP would not (and should not) give free and open access to the test server to anyone (paying or non-paying), for a few rather obvious reasons:
- Why would someone pay for an EvE account when they could play for free on a test server?
- Opening the 'flood gates' on the test server would mean that you'd have a number of people just 'playing', and not actually doing any kind of bug-hunting
- It would become nearly impossible for paying subscribers to use the test server, since it'd end up overcrowded by freeloaders, which means no more useful bug reports (see above)
Some of these reasons have already been touched on by other posters, but honestly, opening Singularity to the general (i.e. non-paying public) would be a tremendous mistake.

Opening Singularity to the whole public would not be good at all.
Efficient testers must know EvE in order to fill usefull bug reports.
Also the test server is running on quite a small cluster compared to Tranquility. If 10k clueless pilots hang in there, real testers would lose in efficiency.
Next, it would give the wrong idea to new pilots about what EvE is.
In all ways, no.

1) Sing is a neutered version of EVE. Certain features mcould also be removed from the test version so there would still be a reason to pay for the real game.
2) A number of people just playing is exactly what the devs need to do to get reports. People whine on the forums here, the public can whine on their own forums for their Sing accounts.
3) Good point. But, I'm not sure how you would be limited in your bug reporting because other people are logged in.
All in all, some changes would no doubt have to be made to the Sing version of the client for this idea to be plausible. ----------- My Bio in Progress Prologue / CH.1 |

I would love to test on Sisi, especially with the new features, some of which are very expesnive to test on tranq. (such as invention, rigs etc). The problem is skill training, if I am going to test something i need the skills, and i dont want to wait months on skills to be able to test. SUPPORT T2 FIX! |

like the other people said, i dont know if that sounds like a good idea. i think the trial accounts are the way to go. having a set of premade characters available to trail accounts that allows you to test different aspects of the game out before investing all that time and money training would be neat. ---- Would you like some cries with your whaaamburger? |

I can definitely see the problems, but with the current system, there's no way to get any real volume of pilots to go test in Sing.
And that of course affects Tranq in the long run. ----------- My Bio in Progress Prologue / CH.1 |

Removing features from the test server defeats the purpose of having a test server to begin with. You want to make it almost exactly like the real thing, without causing impact in your 'live' environment. You're essentially asking for the test server to be turned into a sort of 'EvE-Lite', which is not what Singularity is for.

The devs don't want just anyone to play in the test server. While every paid subscriber has access to Singularity, emphasis is put on people to submit bug reports, test out new layouts, etc. This requires a certain amount of knowledge that only regular EvE players have, not the general player that just downloaded the trial and wants to 'give it a shot'. Imagine the chatter that goes on in the New Player and Help channel, which is a lot of times pretty inane, full of people who didn't bother to do the tutorial, don't check forums, etc, now multiply that 1000 and you'll have what the test server would become if it became accessible to everyone, for free, i.e. nearly useless.

My reply to point 2 already touches up on this. How could any long-time EvE player log into the test server to do anything if it's already overrun by dozens/hundreds/thousands of people that are just 'trying EvE out'? It's already pretty hard to log into Singularity when a sizeable patch is coming, often resulting in you getting dropped in a queue that can take 30+ minutes to log in (like during the weeks before Revelations was deployed). Imagine what kind of feedback you would *not* get because experienced EvE players can't log into the test server? Noobs don't have the knowledge of game mechanics to write a meaningful bug report (unless "OMG DEEZ DRONEZ ARE BRIZOKEN!!@#" can be considered useful).

Changing the client would not do anything useful. The changes you're proposing actually imply changing Singularity to a bigger hardware platform to handle the increased player numbers, effectively almost as big as Tranquility itself. The purpose of Singularity is to test out upcoming game features and bug fixes, not to 'demo' EvE to the masses. If anything, it'd just increase the number of whiners that already plague the forums, complaining about "OMG WHY AREN'T MODULEZ ON TRANQ 100ISK TOO!@#!@" and other inane nonsense. There would be no incentinve for them to obtain a paying account and develop a character when they can do it all, for free.
Man, that was a lot of writting...

Why do that when you can have a free trial. I mean 15 days is plenty, theres no need to have freeloaders screwing up the test server stoppind the bug hunters from finding bugs. --------
