Pay for his ships and skills, do level 4 missions till he learns to fight, set up a base near 0.0 and start hauling out the cheap battle cruisers, attack. Hmm good advice.

Bare witness? It's "bear" witness, as in "carry the word." Unless, of course you think bear could only mean that fuzzy thing you sleep with. *chuckle* Maybe he is trying to encourage more people to play EVE naked? Most people do right?
It won't let us.
That's probably a good thing. If it let us fly naked, most of us would be.

One of my friends kinda wants to try and play, and yet, he still doesn't want to. It's the pure sandbox that kills it for him I think, the lack of goals served by the game, the expectancy that he sets his own goals fully.
I do believe that a sandpark model would make our friends join us in the game. |

I said short story, so, I've got a friend who likes games such as EVE but for some reason he doesnt want to at least try this.
I want to convince him to give it a shot (i do think he will like it) but my usual attempts have failed so far!
Look at the title, read it and tell me, why should he play eve online? Maybe with your help ill manage to "recruit" him to the dark side.
The Plan to Recruit Friends
Step 1: Create a Corp for you and your friend(s) in High-Sec, or invite them to a Corp you are already in. When they sign into the game for the free trial, invite them to your Corp. You will be able to show them the basic ropes of Eve Online in High-Sec, and help them get on their own two feet. There are many Corps in EVE built around helping newcomers get on their feet, and interacting with the Corps members will make them more at ease in the Eve Universe.
Step 2: Advise them to run the Career Agent Missions first. They will be able to familiarize themselves with the basic mechanics of Eve Online, and help them decide how they want to play the game of Eve Online.
Step 3: Familiarize them with the various skills of EVE Online. It can be too easy to train skills that you may no longer use in the distant future, so help them organize a skill plan that fits what they want to do in EVE Online.
Step 4: Run Missions together until they can start flying on their own. Missions will help give them on-hands experience, build up ISK, and give them an idea of how battles in Eve work and the skills required to fight effectively. That is pretty much the purpose of missions in High-Sec outside of money-making: familiarizing characters with the skills required to maximize their efficiency in the field they want to participate in.
That is my advice, at the very least. The rest will all depend on whether or not they want to continue playing by the time their trial period starts to run out. I am a full-time fighter and part-time miner, personally, so I wouldn't know what to suggest (yet) if they want to go into business and become a tycoon in the Eve market.
Tell your friend that EVE Online is a social game, where the key to success is as much about working with other people as it is working on your own. As long as you are there supporting them in their earliest days and later on, I do believe you can get your friend to like the game.

a) because it is beautiful b) it's not the game you think it is - or doesn't have to be c) for all it's faults, it's still here - which kind of proves both a and b correct
I'd advise just getting your friend to try the game, not overly coaching them and see where it goes....

Shame nothing. That (was) one of the most iconic acts in EVE Online. It defined our game and who we are as players better than pretty much everything else.

Cool graphics, which no one can enjoy because the camera is always at the maximum distance. Instead ships only icons. The almost complete lack of logic and physics in mechanics and balance. Because Eve is Excel with graphical user interface. I (we) play because nobody has done something better. That's why Eva is the best! |

Pretty soon, he'll be doing the new craze that has taken over all of Eve Online!

Funny you say that. In corp killing was a pivotal part of my getting locked into eve. I was just teasing ccp, since this is eve. When I was noob, had a corp killer get in. People ranted and whined. I got into a tackle griffin and shouted charge! First pvp as well as I got final blow, in a pod no less. Awox deatt with, it was awesome and to this day has created a unique perspective for how I view eve and the important role new players could have in combat without negating value and importance of veterans and sp

Separate point, eve trial accounts. Free to try and the trial limitations really arent that big of a deal. Feel free to poke me, USTZ, if friend wants to see more of eve.
I stand by that to best enjoy eve, remember it is an experience, not just a game.

So ummm, it turns out that the only reason he is not willing to try eve (YET) is because he is afraid!!
Afraid that he might like the game and that he might get sort of like, addicted to it and then cant stop playing it (apprently this has happened before, lose all self control and just play the game, screw life ) ...
Well, i think i hit a brick wall with this. |

To be honest, the latter is a very valid point. Eve's pacing really makes it easy to spend long periods of time doing absolutely nothing. In an old corp I ran, we could spend hours just mining. Without the hard set start and end pointls, you just keep going until "look at the time!" I can really respect a person that can acknowledge this. Perhaps is best then.

Well, i think i hit a brick wall with this.
Well, that is an understandable fear.
One way to help him escape this fear is to place a set goal for every time he goes to play the game, or a standard amount of time to play the game. He should make sure he adheres to that time, and he should be all set to go, adjusting what he does in that amount of time as his character's skills grow.
A while back, when I wasn't too busy, I made it my goal to accumulate close to 100 million ISK per day (since I fly in Null-Sec and run Anomalies, that basically amounts to three Havens for 40 minutes each on average). Nowadays I just run one Haven per day and then salvage the wrecks (I'm storing up for a Citadel ), after which I am finished playing for the day. My goal back then was to get enough ISK to buy PLEX to extend my play-time beyond my initial subscription (and to multi-train my one alt).
Of course, you need a good enough ship with the proper bonuses and skills trained to manage that sort of pay out in that time-frame (much less fly a Haven), and I'm still training a skill set to allow me to optimize my Haven running and make them go even faster.
As Markus Reese said, it is easy to lose track of time in the rabbit hole of the EVE Wonderland, so the best advice to give him would be to set himself a set amount of time to play the game per day (or every other day) and a set goal of what to achieve in that time frame. An hour at minimum and two hours at maximum per day should do it.

Timer alarm is a good one as well. Nice thing is you really can just log off anywhere. Decide a max time, log in, start timer, it goes, time to finish up and call it. Well, you know your friend better than we do, so either way, best of luck
