I don't even know where I am...
I'm in space just floating around in a pod with the tutorial barking at me to warp or be pod killed. I only started yesterday, total playing time - about 4 hours?
Anyway, yeah
I think the best course of action would be to try and get to a space station? At least that's safe, right? I logged out while in the pod, probably a bad thing to do...
Ok so tips/advice for the recently blown to pieces?

1: GET TO A STATION PRONTO!!
2: Buy a new ship with the cash you get.
3: DONT GET DISCOURAGED!! This kind of thing happens, and its important to remember to take it easy and view this as a minor setback. Your ship is not the whole deal, you still have all the skills you learned in real life so if it happens again, you know what to do.

The pod is a quiet interesting space craft. It can warp vast streches without needing to stop midway to regain cap.
Anyway, get to a station, get a new ship and be on your merry way. Ships blow up all the time, it's just a matter of when. :P good for the market.
I would suggest searching for EVE University or something like that. They are in the Ivy League alliance. They should be able to help you get your bearings.
EVE is a big game, it just grows bigger and bigger the more you get into it.

I got a new ship when I made it back to a station, something about insurance yadda and they gave me some tritanium (sp?). So I'm back in my little Ibis mining ore and fuddling about. I've made 100k in money so far...

So open the market, and look for frigates corresponding to your race, and you should be able to find a mining ship (read the description) for about 30k (Bantam frigate?), or a light combat ship for about 25k (Condor frigate?). Either of these would be much better than the Ibis, and they are cheap.
The Bantam has bonuses to mining, and you can expand its cargo with cargo expanders (search for "expanded" on the market, buy the cheapest), and put 2 mining lasers on it (miner I probably, to start with), and go mine. Because of the mining bonuses, you can probably mine 3-4x as fast with it, compared to the Ibis. You spend about 40k outfitting it, and can make a lot more cash faster as soon as you get it.
The Condor is a combat ship, you want some guns on it, probably 125mm railgun I's, or light blasters (if you prefer short range), maybe a 1MN afterburner and a small shield booster, maybe a small shield extender, and maybe a reactor control unit or power diagnostic system in the low slots. Get some ammo (small ??? charges, each kind has its own range, so get the kind that fits the guns... long range for the rails, or short range but big damage (antimatter) for the blasters), and then you're ready for combat.
All you need to do is find an agent (Open People and Places, set it to search for corporations, search for Caldari Navy, right-click, show info, and look at the Agents tab). The agent will send you to do missions, which you can do with the combat ship you now have (some might be difficult for it, a few of the named missions require a heavy combat ship like the Merlin or Kestrel frigates), and you get cash and loot rewards which you can sell or recycle for minerals (and then sell those).

Everything is fine now, made about 14 gate jumps to get to the Dabrid system and joined up with the Big Sky mining corp. Time to play and earn that living :)
Thanks for the replies folks, I was kinda lost at the start even after the tutorial I think the getting blown up just threw me off a little. But anyway i'm into the swing of it and doing fine :)
Also moved my upgraded clone to Dabrid

Do bigger crafts require more cap in order to warp? How does this work exactly?

Yes, as the mass of the ship increases, the capacitor need to warp increases as well. Although bigger ships have a lower capacitor recharge rate, their capacitor is bigger so they can easily cope with this increased warp capacitor need.
Note that this also shows differences in the races. Since Caldari usually have small capacitors and very heavy ships, their warp performance is worse than that of e.g. the minmatar, with larger capacitors and low weight ships. ~Soi ______________________________

Every ship has a hidden attribute that adjusts its warp efficiency and speed. The cost in cap that a warp jump has also depends on the total mass of your ship. The more you have in your cargo hold, the more cap you need to warp. The skill Warp Drive Operation will decrease cap need, and thus increase the distance you can warp.

You'll be given a new starter ship when you get back to a station.
You didn't mention your race but if it's Gallente, the Imicus is the best all around frig for minining and rat hunting.
You probably need to train some gunery skills and/or drone skills before you try pirate hunting again. But not much. Don't go any deeper than .7 and you'll be ok.

This is so true! I've been playing since mid October and tend to avoid combat with other players. I've lost four ships since I started:
1) Very early days my first Bantam went down to pirates in a an asteroid belt. I just didn't know the game controls, got all flustered and got shot up before I could warp out. I was very upset at the time as I didn't really understand that ships are completely expendable (you are not your ship!!). 2) Early days got myself a relatively expensive Merlin fully equipped and was having a whale of a time doing level 1 missions. Thought I was unstoppable. Warped into a nest of mercenaries for one mission and was shot to bits. Once again got flustered and didn't exit quickly enough. Quite upset at the loss of that lovely expensive ship and went mining for a while. Haven't used a frigate since - moved to Destroyers. 3) Fairly recently in a fully equipped destroyer was busy salvaging and had a nearly full hold. Someone took offence to me looting their wrecks and must have called in a friend in the same corporation. Next thing I knew I was scrambled, being shot to hell, too weak to fight back, too slow to run away and quickly became a ú5M pile of scrap. I was a bit shocked at the speed it all happened, and upset because it took me ages to troll round loads of systems collecting the ship and it's component modules. The money wasn't too much of an issue - a few hours salvaging or mining got that back. I did mourn the nearly full cargo hold of salvaged stuff though. Took a day to get a replacement ship up and running properly. 4) Very recently lost a similar destroyer through stupidity. Busy salvaging (again). I was too low level to salvage one of the ships. and its presence in my display was confusing me as it was similar to loads of other wrecks I wanted to loot. The wreck belonged to someone else. I decided to shoot it to clear it away. Targetted it. Shot it. Got a warning familiar to salvagers about committing a crime. Ignored the warning - then all hell let loose. Security status downgraded, red global "baddie" warning top left, Concorde warping in and taking me out with one shot. Ouch - I was only tidying up. Didn't even have time to think WTF. I didn't expect that shooting someone's (guristas) wreck would be treated like shooting someone's proper ship. I learned a lesson from that one. Upset at losing a ship due to my lack of undertstanding of game mechanics but considerably less emotional about it that the previous three occasions. Only took 2-3 hours to get an exact replacement up and running this time.
I haven't been podded yet - when that happens I will be gutted. Those implants are expensive!
NB OP - always ensure your clone is up to date. On a different topic I advsise the OP to look into the 11 learning skills and cheap set of learning implants as soon as possible
Good Luck.
I'm into manufacturing now so I hope you lose lots of ships in your Career

by the sound of your post, it would seem this is the tutorial your in while this happened and it's suppose to happen to stress the importance of warping quickly when your ship goes POP. is this a new feature in the new tutorial?? if so, you'll get a new noob ship when you get back to the station anyway, no loss.

AURA laughs at you when your pod is destroyed and has for a while really. This one happens upon your first ship destruction, which is usually a really bad time to lose your interface and get laughed at. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | How to Build from a BPO |

I do believe that there are documents somewhere here (if I wasn't so lazy, I'd check whether it says it in the slightly out-dated Player's Guide) that state the security system. Actually, it is a good read, as well as some of the New Player's Guide links in the so-named threat in the New Players' Q&A forum.
From 1.0 to 0.5, you will have decreasing amount of CONCORD (police) protection. This space is called high security (hisec)
From 0.4 and downwards you will have none. You might have, with some luck, turrets present, but they are tankable. It is the low security space or lo(w)sec (until 0.1). Then, there's 0.0, which is not owned by any Empire, but possibly by player alliances. There are usually no stations in 0.0, and the law of the jungle is all you've got.
So, if you go lower than 0.5, it is fully possible that you get shot, for multiple reasons, not the least of which is people with their trigger finger twitching. Lowsec is survivable for a solo newbie, if you use the functions in your map (F10) to find out where there are only a few people and even the more important, low kill counts. And also, don't linger in the warp in points. If you get a bit further, you might have a few extra seconds to warp out if someone warps in to your belt.
Not to discourage you, you can still get shot at hisec, too, if (1) your corp is in war (2) you carry something valuable and someone makes a suicide attack on you or (3) you do steal something (for example from a container saying "free stuff") and the owner of the container happens to be close by (like, camping 30 km away).
So, to reach the final conclusion: - Have fun (that's why we're here) - Be careful (though no need to be over-spooker or paranoid, except when the yarring guy wearing an eyepatch starts to chat with you in lowsec) - Don't fly what you can't lose (because sooner or later you'll lose it anyway)

So who owns these turrets? Is it the faction who has sovereignity? And am I right in thinking they are there to shoot any one who has shot something (or used a EW device) without kill rights or being at war? Presumably they have a range, what is the range?
And CONCORD, as I understand it, will respond whenever someone steals or shoots at something. That said I was in a complex the other day, someone stole from me and there was no CONCORD response :P.
Also what's the difference between a 0.6 sec system and a 1.0 sec system, is the CONCORD presence somehow tighter?
This is pretty confusing.

The station or the gate. Turrets surrounding ABC CORP station belong to ABC CORP. Turrets surrounding a stargate belong to the local navy. So if you aggro local navy, don't warp to a stargate at 15 km.
Quote: And am I right in thinking they are there to shoot any one who has shot something (or used a EW device) without kill rights or being at war? Presumably they have a range, what is the range?
The following responses apply to empire space (0.1 - 1.0):
Turrets shoot valid targets, and once you are shot legally through global criminal flag, existing aggro, or really bad standing, you become a valid target.
1) To gain red criminal flag, aggress illegally or assist a criminal (i.e. click Yes in the attack warning).
2) All global criminals are valid targets. The global criminal flag gives everyone (players and NPC) permission to shoot global criminals.
3) Once players/NPC take a shot at the global criminal, they can continue to do so for the next 15 minutes after their latest shot. (Hint: Tanking someone for 15 minutes does not stop him from continuing.)
Quote: And CONCORD, as I understand it, will respond whenever someone steals or shoots at something. That said I was in a complex the other day, someone stole from me and there was no CONCORD response :P.
No. Concord only blows up anyone with a global criminal flag.
Quote: Also what's the difference between a 0.6 sec system and a 1.0 sec system, is the CONCORD presence somehow tighter?
Due to randomness, not much difference.

So not only does the person require a global criminal flag, existing aggro, or really bad standing, he must also be shot by a player (who will have a legal right to do so).
If a player steals from you CONCORD will NOT respond, correct? They will simply turn a blind eye when you shoot the guy whilst he is agressed?

No. Anyone (players, NPC, stations, POS, and anything) is allowed to shoot a global criminal. When allowed, NPC *will* shoot. Players can choose to shoot or sit back.

This is certainly true. I didn't lose my first ship until I'd been playing for 4 months. It was a nicely fitted out Brutix lost on a mission which caught me by surprise and I wasn't fast enough with the warp button - now I always warp into missions with an out-of-system destination set, and all my hardeners/damage control etc running. That cost me roughly 50 million. Boy was I cross!! Not so much with the money, but with the amount of time taken to buy and setup a new ship. You are in the enviable position of a) not losing much each time, and b) being able to replace your ship in a few minutes instead of hours.

Just thought I'd add an FYI to this :)
I'm doing fine now, got my bantam, dual miner I lasers and cargo expansion. I'm currently training up and saving to buy a Kestrel for missions & I'll leave it at that for the moment, Bantam for Mining, Kestrel with 150mm rail guns/iridium charges/shield boosters and anything I can think of later to improve it's combat effectiveness for missions.
In game 3 days now and loving it. I learn fast & also props to the Big Sky Corp. I joined yesterday and those guys have given me a lot of good advice on what skills to train and when etc.
See you in space *waves*

I'd say skip the destroyer but you're already there. If you're trying to go deeper into mining, I'd seriously train up to Caldari Cruiser and go for an Osprey. That little fellow will really crank out the ore, and skilled properly can tank those .5 rats without a problem. Fitted with as many Miner IIs as it will support, a launcher, and some cheap drones - I never had much problem. Well except when I got it about 11 days in and then fell asleep at the computer and ending up waking to a pod. :)
