Hehe you clearly do not work in the games industry. Databases were very well established when UO came out but they still made the mistake of using flat files on the backend to store massive amounts of data for instance.
This is an industry notorious for circular hiring and a "not invented here" mentality. Obviously things have been improving but it's a very logical assumption to suspect that CCP might not even have a proper DBMS support staff or the DBMS might be ignored too much.

If CCP is in fact on the SQL Server bandwagon (no blame there...MSFT used to hand it out for free way back when, which is a boon to an ambitious new project), then CCP needs to investigate serious optimizations as Barrier detailed. If they already have optimized everything as far as it will go, then frankly you need an enterprise level DBMS.
It's far worse than you imagine. They had something else and they actually changed to SQL Server on purpose.
I'll bite the bullet and actually say what the problem is for those of you who missed some interviews that happened like a year or so ago.
Certain key people who work in CCP are very pro-microsoft. I won't name names but T-shirts with penguins being harmed are involved :p. I would not be suprised if these key people are reaching outside their area's of expertise and influencing decisions in bad ways (aka like picking Microsoft SQL server which is clearly a poor choice).
They are very smart obviously and sometimes smart game coders/designers have a problem with trying to do to much because let's face it they usually have what it takes to tackle all sorts of fields. But everyone can overextend. This is all just vague surmising on my part of course.

Erm...I'm pretty sure they've been using MSSQL from day one, oh and tux was brought in well after the new server was brought in.
Freaking Linux Zealots
They were not using it from day one. Also what does this have to do with Linux? Linux would be a horrible platform to run something as large scale as EvE. While it would be a huge step up from an MS OS it's still nowhere near good enough for something like this. Need something much more stable than that. Not everyone who thinks MS software sucks for things it isn't designed for is a "linux zealot". Also I was not talking about Tux.

I did some digging and EvE has in fact used MS SQL from the start. The upgrade I was thinking of was when they changed from their horrible old version to the somewhat less horrible newer version.
Also all the whiners blah blahing about people acting like experts.
If you need to be an expert to know that MS SQL is a horrid choice for EvE then I can say I finally understand why the IT industry is in such shambles. Thanks for cluing me in.
More seriously the staff has pretty much admited that database problems are the crux of their difficulties. Saying moving to Linux or some such is pointless though and just brings the stupid anti linux fanatics out of the wood work for no reason. Database software is a very specific task and changing from one general purpose OS to another isn't going to do much when Databases pretty much shove the OS out of the way as much as possible in the first place.

Oveur thanks for the replies.
My own comments regarding MS SQL being a mistake are in regards to you guys needing to do stuff like control bookmark copying. Frankly that should of never been a problem with a real database. Also frankly speaking load is a useless stat compared to peak load but I will assume you were speaking of peak load in the first place. As someone else said database latency has little to do with that anyways. But that is getting a bit complicated and we know nothing of what you really use the database for in the first place. Nevertheless I believe that you guys are not currently having problems with the database. As a customer though I still wish to strongly state I am not confident with you using that software and it will continue to give me a bad impression of CCP's technical competance going forward if no plans are made to replace it as it becomes a problem for you again. Of course I admit your willingness to talk about technical details probably completely overrides all that and probably gives you positive brownie points overall.
Thank you for the other comments on your CPU usage. CCP has discussed that being a problem before but it was always really portrayed as a problem with how the server distributes what systems are on what CPU. I had not realized that an entire solar system was running on a single CPU. If you guys are indeed working on this then I am satisfied with that personally.
