Is hacking success simply a collection of the few percentages that increase hacking chance? As far as i know, hacking is just modified by Hacking (5% per level), Codebreaker I (5%) and now the rigs (20% and 40%).
So maxed out, you can get: 1.25 * 1.05 * 1.2 * 1.2 = 89% success (2 T1s) 1.25 * 1.05 * 1.4 = 83.75% (1 T2)
If thats right. Why would you use a T2 rig then, as you can't fit a T2 and a T1 rig (500 calibration), and 2 T1s beats a T2? Also, is there no way to get it higher than that? No base chance or such, no way to hit 100%?

Its actually:
(lvl * 5%) * rig 1 bonus * rig 2 bonus
so
(5*5%) * 1.2 * 1.2 = 36.6% vs. (5*5%) * 1.4 = 35%
But your point is still valid. (You can verify the numbers by looking at the stats of the fitted module.)

Do these percentages indicate if you are able to OPEN the can or are they indicative of IF YOU GET SOMETHING from the can? Thanks. Brasky

Its missing the Codebreaker bonus...
Even with it ... wow hacking chance sucks.
.25 * 1.2 * 1.2 * 1.05 = 37.8%

One would think so. But apparently thats not how it works. Look at the "Access Difficulty Bonus" on the fitted module. It fits my formula.

Ouch... Haven't actually fitted one yet so was just going by the market. Thats quite horrible, and rigs being bad on top of that...
Thanks for explaining it though.

Still, the use of having a T2 hacking rig is to have 2 rig slots open for other, cheaper T1 rigs, without losing too much on the hacking bonuses.
Hacking is just like Salvaging though, despite the low apparent chance, it usually works fairly quickly. I've done a bit of hacking and I usually managed to hack within three cycles.

If its just the chance to open it, i wouldn't care. I could fit a Lachesis with 7 code breakers and hack in one cycle probably... just like with a destroyer salvaging. (Again, i don't actually hack yet, so i'm assuming.) But i hear that even with a successful hack you don't get everything in the container. I assumed this was tied to the success rate... maybe thats a mistake to assume? What i am after is the highest chance to get every item in a container, without having to have another hacker follow up and try their luck with the same containers.

Yeah, there is a lot more to than meets the eye.
I'm trying to figure it all out. One thing is sure though. Can's have diffenrent base hacking chance, on top of that they can have restrictions like "You need hacking lvl x to open this can".
What cans actually drop vs. whats in them also seems to be calculated.

Yup, I am doing a lot of research on this as well, and skill lvl DOES matter on hacking. Sorry for ever doubting you Qual :P

I've been told by players that the level affects what kind of stuff you can get out from a can. I know of one guy that found a hacking exploration site, used a cargo scanner and saw two items in the can, hacked it and only got one of them (not maxed skills).

I love it!
CCP has made a means to tease the exploration dudes...not only are they hard to find, hard to clear the rats, but they are hard to get the loot drops.
Scenario:
Player scans the spawn can.
"OMG I see the UBER LOOT in the can with my cargo scanner mod. I am so gonna be rich!!!!!!"
Player runs off to get his ship with 2 techII approriate rigs for the spawn can.
*Opens Can*
*Looks at empty can......*
"Arrrrghhhhh, why me, why am I so unlucky!"......proceeded by his corpmates having to listen to one hour of moaning and *****ing about the fish that got away on team speak.
If CCP really wants to have fun they just can have a data interface always show up in the spawn cans when a cargo scanner is used on them .... but never drop except the .0001% of the time it currently happens. I am so gonna love the stories/threads/*****es of the uber loot that got away.

So all in all, is hacking worth the enourmous training and trying time, or not?

Nice thing about hacking training, its all used for other useful stuff (except hacking itself).

Is training Medium Railgun Spec woth the time?
If you are a PvP player or agent runner, hell yeah!
If you are a trader or miner, not really.
If you want to be a serious explorer, its a must. If you wan' to fool around in a site or two, not so much.

Hm... so just to clarify, will multiple codebreakers help or will only the rigs stack? I wanted to set up a good hacking config but was never sure if 2 codebreakers were actually better than 1. I actually never thought of cargo scanning the loot can so that may be one mod I'll load. Nothing more frustrating though to get to a can, break in and... nothing. :-(

Based on these findings and reports from my corp mate actually hacking and using archeology, the percent chance you have is just to open it, and has little if anything to do with what you actually get from the can. He was pulling around 60% of the items with only a 20% chance to open. (This is assuming hacking and archeology are identical.)

Codebreakers dont stack, but having two running will only help you get into the can faster. Wont help you on the loot table.

Thanks Qual, always good info. If I learn anything new as I play around I'll post it. I gotta build some riggs and give it another go.

Somewhere in some deep vault at ccp. Actually its seems randomly setup for each can. So a can might look like this (theory, not fact!):
51.3% Some components 36.1% Interface bpc 19.3% Some components 8.3% Some skill
So first you have to hack the can. Here multiple modules will help you as you get more chances of succesfully get into the can. Once in the can, EvE will look at the can's loot table and decide what you actually get. Here extra modules dont give a bonus as they dont stack.
Here even the best possible setup would not get you the last components at 51.3% difficulty. Lvl V hacking and a T2 memetic rig would not get the Interface (35%), but lvl V hacking and 2 T1 memetic rigs (36.6%) would drop the Interface to you.
When you scan the can you will see all items on the loot list, even tough they might be impossible to get.
Mind you, this is still all theory, and there are unclear and enexplained stuff in this theory. On thing is that can's seemingly having a different base hacking difficulty, but its onclear if this only applies to getting into the can, and not to the loot table. Something like that is impossible to determine without extensive statistical material.

You picture showed %36, not %36.6.
%25 * 1.2 * 1.2 = %36, not %36.6.
Use a calculator to verify this.

Addition skill levels or percentages do not affect the ammount of loot received.
The rigs will only let you open the can faster, not get you more loot.
