how about a way to make your own ship designs from scratch, obviously there will be a system in place to balance what can be created but i think it'd be good to be able to to creat your own ship from scratch, how it looks, handles, what it can mount etc. Just a thought

I like this idea, and I think you can take it a step further. I think that since you are designing the prototype, that the ship should cost you the price of the blueprints, which are included in the deal.

Having done 3D modeling with LightWave, I am sure that there will be limitations to what options would be available for for the hulls appearance; but as far as the inner workings of the ship go, that could be the actual special part of the design.

good idea but a feature like this would require an insane amount of more coding, balancing, and other stuff. Maybe in an expansion pack?

Also if ever done i would like to see a copyright system put in with it so if 1 corp makes a really well balanced ship no other corp can rip it off

i love the idea. i am not sure if its possible to actually decide what the shapes of the parts would look lie, e.g. it would be owsome if you could be able to design the wings and*****pit etc... i know a new game that is coming out (SPORE) which enables the player to actually design the character, its almost like using photoshop, even better. so if they did something like that it would be great.

Im going on the assumption that the client holds 90% of the data for how the ships and objects actually look, wireframe data ,skin graphics etc. Based on this assumption everytime a new ship is designed and created then everyones client would have to be patched so that everyone else can see it. To this extent there would have to be some limitation to how often you can create new ship designs otherwise we will be bombarded with daily patches.
This could be handled by only allowing a completed ship design to tendered to CCP and once approved at regular intervals ie Once a month they accept ship designs for reviewing. The design is commited to a Blueprint and the appropriate data is patched to the clients. The designer is then given a Blueprint of their new ship design. The materials required for manufacture of that ship is determined by CCP based on size and complexity of the ship.
The balance issue and resulting ship setup can be managed fairly easily, you start with 1 of 5 basic chasis sizes
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser
Battlecruiser
Battleship
From there you can select from a range of "Construction" modules that you can fit to that Chasis
Hi Slot Holders
Med Slot Holders
Low SLot Holders
Varying sizes of reactor Core
Varying Sizes of Capacitor
Shield generators/Hardeners
Armor Plating/Hardeners
and so on
each item has a designated point value for wich the each type of chasis has a preset maximum.
As modules are added or removed it impacts the final characteristics of the ship.
ie adding a massive propultion system increases speed and agility but also increases sig radius.

I think that as the post above says a new patch would be needed for new models of ships, this is not practical, the only way I could see it working is allowing you to take and existing hull and perhaps change its colour or markings, and allow the ship fitting slots to be moved around, i.e. less hi more low slots ect.
Who know what effect this would have on ship balance though? Sounds like too hard an idea to pull off, but not impossible

rather than allowing for the different design of a ship, Id rather them throw in some sort of skill based production. Let the manufaturers skill levels affect the final product. It makes NO sense that my trial account alt can make the same exact ship as the my corps production manager. Currently the only thing the manufacturers skillset affects is the material wastage factor and the time to manufacture an item.

Let the "crafters" of eve be able to boast superior ships for investing large amounts of skill training into these skills.

Give these guys some sort of incentive for training a few months worth of skills to say "wow now i can make a damn good battleship...better than I used to be, now I can make some serious money".

As of right now, the only thing that makes these builders any money is to hope that no one undercuts them on the market. If there were ships out there with varying stats, people would sell their wares based on the final product theyve put out.

Varying stats, eek.

The difference between someone on a trial account and a high-end industrialist is that the trial account person pays far, far more to make something and takes longer. The industrialist can make things cheaper and faster.

Plus, made capital ship items lately? Expensive higher-end skills are required there that no trial account will have.

Please, let's keep this simple.
