Gallente, mercenary and drones (at least not the mission drones) give no salvage.
Only the pirate faction ships have salvage. --- Words without action is death to the nature of logic. |

Thx. So if I have this right; only the the bad guys (i.e. not caldari,Min,Gall and Ammar(NPC)) factions don't drop loot along with drones, just the pirate NPC guys are worth salvaging ?

Well, if you PvP, then whoever you shoot can be salvaged too...

I don't know if this issue is a "feature" or a bug, but I'm disappointed that I was looking forward to salvaging and finding that a lot of stuff doesn't give up salvage.
If you use the Overview settings, you can change the appearance of names of ships on the main playfield, one of the settings is to show the "type" within parenthesis.
If the type is just the text "Wreck", then it will NEVER yield salvage. If it says something more complex, like "Serpentis Medium Wreck", then it might drop salvage.
This "type" information only appears as part of the parenthetical name of a ship on the main playfield, when you put your cursor over it.

Is there a database which gives the likelihood of ships/objects dropping loot/salvage?

You can also look at the messages the salvage attempt gives back. If the message is "You successfully salvage from the Wreck, however......" it doesn't ever give salvage. If it reads "You successfully salvage from the Angel small wreck, however...." It can give salvage and you just had some bad luck. Check to see if the wreck is named or not when you complete salvaging. |

I have pretty much noticed those things and came here to confirm my findings. what I don't understand: why does ccp let ships create wrecks which you will never be able to salvage from? why don't they just let them drop cans like before?
sorry, but what is it good for? drives me crazy, because I have 2 options here: totally losing control over which wreck I already checked for loot or salvage dozens of wrecks without ever getting anything. ok, there is a 3rd option: leave it all behind. but that can't be the ccps masterplan, now can it?

Its allready adressed in a Devblog that not all shipwrecks were itemized and that they are working on it.

First, your overview should distinguish between wrecks with loot (triangle filled), wrecks without(triangle hollow), and wrecks you checked (greyed out). Second, generally a mission will contain rats of only one faction. With the exception of some special rats like a named mission objective ship, you should be able to tell whether all the wrecks give salvage just by salvaging a single ship. Some people have even chronicled which facions currently give salvage and which don't. As a rule of thumb, however, if it's a faction that haunts asteroid belts as well, it'll be itemized.

When the ability to salvage was created (not too long ago, mind you), not all wrecks in the game had the necessary information listed in the database. As Kesh said, this was outlined in a devblog, they're working on it because basically it requires updating thousands (?) of entries by hand to change all the items that used to be generic (WRECK), upgrading them to (SERPENTIS SMALL WRECK for example) and giving them appropriate drops. Apparently (?) in the next patch coming soon, all wrecks will be salvagable and the salvaging rates will be adjusted.
And remember, salvaging is in no small part luck. Just as an example from player wrecks I've salvaged over the past week... Minmatar Elite Frigate) 1 Micro Circuit Gallente Battleship: 1 lousy Metal Scrap Minmatar Battleship: Nothing. Zero zip nada. Amarr Battleship: 14 Damaged Artificial Neural Network and 14 Tripped Power Circuits That's about 15 million isk from one wreck right there. Gallente Elite Cruiser: 3 Artificial Neural Interfaces and 1 Micro Circuit
It just depends, sometimes you have a run of 'nothing to salvage', sometimes everything you see gives up parts.

just noticed the thing with the grayed out wrecks. that wasn't there back when I didn't have salvaging skills. didn't realize they had implemented that since I just tried to salvage anything. thanks alot for the hint tho. well, maybe I didn't look into the matter thorough enough. if I had, I probably would have realized it's still a work in progress. nothing to complain about then.
