I wish more pirates would do it. I would pay more than you'd get for loot from my ships to be able to keep the ship.
But what I'm wondering is how many people do it, and if you have a good system for convincing your prey you'll let them go when they pay.
I was thinking half now, half after I let you go kind of thing.

There's not much point in trying to convince the target. If they don't pay, they die.

He said he'd give me 10mil. 10mil or blow up a Rokh...

I generally try to ransom whenever I can , and I always answer ransom requests. It gets me in trouble often though...
Yesterday I tried camping a nice (loot fountain) gate in my ole rax , after a while I managed to get a lock on an indie ship. Drones go wild at him , he goes down steadily , then I receive a ransom request.
Pleasantly surprised , I ask 20 millions (standard amount) as I recall my drones , but then the hauler starts discussing it , saying he doesn't have that much. I tell him to pay what he can , growing impatient as my armor enters its last quarter. No answer , no time to redeploy drones and kill him , time to go.

Turns out a VETO taranis invited himself to the party. From then I watch powerless as my ship and pod are destroyed.

I always try to ransom, but some ppl are willing to loose their Drake to my Vengeance, even I asked for 25 mils. He said he have enough ISK and simply don't wanna me to have satisfaction of his ISK. Ransoming is much entertaining thing for me than blowing up, even sometimes I know I would get more ISK from his loot. |

Yep double plate rax ftw. Obviously it works much better with a BS damage dealer drawing sentry fire after the target is scrambled. A very cheap setup to gatecamp with.

After I convo and ask for ransom, I give them 1 minute to pay-or-die. This is more for my own safety, since I don't want to have to deal with random allies warping in and putting a stop to my dastardly activities. ___________

the old classic 1600 RT plate light neutron II rax setup with medium t2 rep can actually tank gate guns for a little time. enough for a quick hauler kill, loot and leave. wouldn't try ransoming tho

Ransoming is a funny thing. Basically the older the player, the less worthwhile it is to ransom because the more likely they are to drop t2 and faction presents. But Younger players it's definitely worth ransoming as often the most expensive thing they own is the ship itself.
I'd lost the habit of ransoming because of our killboard but then today one guy convo'd me asking to pay and then I ransomed another guy and together, they paid for my shiny new setup, reminding me that ransoming is a great way to make ISK.

Unfortunately , a large part of the people careless enough to rat / mine in lowsec and get caught , in an uninsured ship even , don't have enough money to pay the asked ransom so ships go pop but drop plain loot.

Well I recently got killed by pirates, now I don't complain about that... that's their way of playing and to be honest it makes things exiting.
It went something like this, I warped through the gate on my way to a mission, I had not scouted or checked map so that was my fault. On the other side I found 3 battleships, I got scrambled and they blew up my ship. I tried to get away in my pod but did not manage that either... so they held my pod and one did convo me and ask for 100 million.
Now, since I don't carry implants 100 million for a 4.9 million clone is abit too much... If they had asked for 100 million to keep my ship, I might actually have considered that. Most of the equipment got destroyed, and I bought new items for like 50-60 million to rig a new battleship. plus had enough minerals to build a new ship already.
The only negative part of that was the fact I had to spend a few hours travling around picking up equipment and stuff.
So what is the lesson here ??? those pirates got roughly 25 million worth of equipment, could have made 100 million in cash instead. Costed me some iskies but it was a ship that have brought in atleast 1 billion isk...

your ship A: could have had lots of loot B: posed a threat to them C: got back to the gate if it had a mwd D: had stabs and warped away
These are the reasons your ship was not ransomed and your pod was I expect

One thing people don't realize about ransoms, is that it's pirates being nice. It's just as easy for us to kill you, scoop your loot, and move on to the next target. Sure the fittings may not cost you much, the ship is insured, but what about the time and aggravation of traveling 20 jumps in all different directiosn to pick that stuff up?

I'm sorry but i don't agree, imo pirate do it all for the money. They will do whatever ,even breaking the law, killing people..., to get money. When blowing a ship there is always the risk that the valuable mods get blown too, meaning not only the victim lost money but you too. You sound more like a pure pvper to me meaning you'd rather have a good kill than a good loot/bounty/ransom.

Poor Umbrella, all the pirates bashing on them, the alliance itself doesnt permit members to pay ransoms, but I know for a fact several of their members will pay pirates under the table to leave them be, my wallet would certainly indicate such from when I lived in that area.
On a different note, it can be hard to get ransoms often as alot of carebears are plain ignorant, and alot of pirates are too dumb to honour ransoms.

T2 ships?
Even a BS pilot might be willing to fork out 30mil ransom to save having to re-insure and if he's a new player its worth checking. Lets face it his loot prolly sucks.

Ransoming is easier to make isk if you are new or fly smaller ships. A Rifter can get 30 mil from a barge.
If you're a loot pirate then you need to take down big targets to make isk. With high loot survival a destroyer, dictor or AF might make you 30 mil but your more likely looking at a T2 fitted cruiser, BC, HAC or BS to make 30 mil or more from loot. Which means you need a strong/expensive ship to do it.
Considering that dying is an inevitable fact for pirates, personally, when I die I'd rather lose an Inty than a Command Ship.
But some people only care about kill mails.

Well, if me and some buddies are in a gang we might just blow them to hell or ransom them both pay alright both are an ego boost.
If i'm on my own I usually let them go boom because when i'm on my own I dont want any interferance but if i'm in an area where theres say 2 others in local I might try a ransom due to the immediate cash burst and not having to sell stuff which can take time.
My opinion = Ransom if local is reletivly clear and you know they have something they want to keep.
Nuke 'em = when local is heaving or they are in a rubbish ship. --------------------------- I'm not a pirate. Yarr!
