eve shortstory
After a while Anu's voice came back: "You're doing very well. Now we are going to activate the audio synthesizers." "Audio synthesizers? What do you mean?" Pirkotan thought. "As you know there is no sound in space, but when we were developing the capsules we found that people wanted to use as many of their senses as possible, thus we added the sound. By letting a computer create three dimensional sound we also add to the awareness you have while in battles, for instance." Several seconds later Pirkotan could hear the audio synthesizers kick in; he could hear the low humming noise of the propulsion system and the sudden hissing sound of course-correctional thrusters. -------------------------------------------

...because, uhm, this is a GAME?
You might as well ask: Why are there fireous explosions in space?

There can still be fiery explosions in space due to oxygen released from life support units etc.

That is as good an explanation as I have ever heard for it.

That's like asking whether bunnyhopping worked for the soldiers hitting the beaches on D-Day.

Still I'm missing the the sounds of screaming engines when I zoom in on my ship.
Homeworld is better that way, though they ofcourse couldn't care less about the explanation. --- soonÖ |

you can hear all sounds in space .
you just need special vacuum adapted space ears.
like doctor spock.

Who ever told you there's no sound in space?
Sounds are audio-interpreted vibrations. Now I agree that normal matter transmitted vibrations cannot be transmitted through a perfect vaccuum, but space isn't a perfect vaccuum...
What you hear is the syncopation of the solar wind from which ever star system you happen to be in?
Your ships advanced technology can pick that up and intrepret it as sound....
if you ever hear the wind pick up, I'd head for the nearest jumpgate.

ROFLMAO....
I can just imagine it now..
German Soldier to Officer "Sir the dreaded Allied forces have unleashed a new secret weapon... their soldiers are hopping up the beaches!!!" Officer "Damn them... it must be those carrots we heard about to increase their night vision giving them special powers!" -------------------------------------------

If I'd nitpick now: Yes, there is some oxygen there, however, as little as there is, it would only go "poof" and vanish. You'd be sure to see more rubble and debris then fire. ALSO, (as every Trekkie who dosn't belive that Trek-Tech works should know), explosions in space do not look like the do on earth. No "bubbles" that form. It's more like ... *thinks* A ring getting blown out or something?

Edited by: IZON on 04/12/2003 19:15:40 Your avatar is not in space, but inside a ship which is not a vacuum. So it's the roar of the egines you hear from 'inside' the ship. I wear ear mufflers - the rest of my crew are tone deaf.

Edited by: Manfred Doomhammer on 04/12/2003 19:26:13 hmm its true you cannot hear sound in space.. but you are not sitting in space either... and i belive that with the forces that are in effect during spaceflight i guess that many of these (gravitational waves, xdimensional resonances in the shield structure for example) could very well induce vibrations and waves in the ships internal athmosphere, thus resulting in sound you can hear... after all, when a ship blows up (usually due to a reactor core breach) that creates a nice shockwave... maybe even space-time continuum is afected by that...
now.. would that be a possible answer?

Actually when a flamable substance is lit in space it blows out in a sphere, kinda like the Robotech explosions in the anime. Saw pics of a test on a NASA website somewhere. I tried to find the link but no luck.
