So I've been out of the game for close to 5 years now and I figured I'd come back and give it a try, bought a mackinaw, set it up to mine and was watching netflix only kind of paying attention. The next thing I know Im getting ganked and podded. Which, whatever I can replace ships, but I played for almost two years and Im not sure I was ever ganked while mining in that time. Is this something that I should plan on happening regularly? Or am I just really unlucky to have this happen my first night back? |

Mackinaws are a gank magnet, so if you are going to use one, semi-AFK is not the way.
If you want to semi-AFK mine, then use a Procurer and tank it. It'll take a bit longer to mine the same amount, but if you are doing other things anyway, then it's the better option.

A little of both. Ganking in general has increased a bit, but generally its always been a bad idea to afk-anything in eve for too long. Eventually the sins of the past catch up to you.
In any case, you should always plan for the worst, which means losing your ship. If you dont like the risk, then get a procurer/skiff, or buy a bunch of retreivers instead and hulltank it. But you have to remember that the chance of being ganked will never go away, and that risk will always increase if youre afk. |

I'm afraid this was your first mistake. Mackinaws aren't very sturdy mining ships and are vulnerable to being ganked by cheap, cost-efficient destroyers. If you intend on mining in a Mackinaw, Retriever, Hulk or Coveter I recommend paying more attention to the local chat channel and your directional scanner for content creators seeking to bring some excitement to your mining session. In short, AFK'ing is not good for the health of one's mining ship.

If you don't mine afk, people, there is nothing to worry about. No need to pay, no need to sacrifice yield, nothing.
Please all remember that ganking activity is low, that isk amounts destroyed express nothing about actual impact and that one small group of gankers doesn't make the whole ganking scene.

1: Boredom is your worst enemy. Talk to a friend and/or browse the forums. 2: The greater the distance to a trade hub, the lower your chance of getting shot at. You will probably want a freighter to haul that much ore. 3: Gankers like ice belts. 4: Procurers aren't very squishy. They're even harder to kill with a damage control unit and mids full of shield hardeners. They aren't invulnerable, but they require quite a bit of firepower to take out. They're the fastest, hardest-hitting, tankiest, and hardest to scan down. They sometimes even take unsuspecting frigates down in lowsec. 5: Use directional scan to know what everybody else is doing. Catalysts, thrashers, and combat scanner probes are bad for you. 6: You have eyes and a brain. Explore the game and notice things.

Also: Just become the Ganker! But if not, fly a Procurer. |

Fly something that's less tasty as a target. Flashy T2 Exhumers like the Mackinaw make a tasty killmail and people will shoot at them on that basis alone.
The humble T1 Procurer is, imho, the best option in most circumstances, with the sole exception of Gas harvesting, where the mighty Venture reigns supreme.
A properly tanked Procurer requires a significant number of gank Catalysts to pop and is far less of a target for that reason. Even better is being in your humble Procurer, surrounded by Hulks or Mackinaws. Any Gank Squad worth it's salt won't be coming after you first.

There are TONS of things you can do to reduce the risk of getting ganked.
The biggest thing, in my opinion, is just not becoming a target in the first place. Use dotlan to find a very quiet system to go mine in. The fewer people that spend any time in the system or pass through it (hint, systems down dead ends), the lower your chance of even being seen by a ganker let alone ending up as that ganker's target.
Beyond that, paying attention is the next best bet. But of course not everyone wants to watch dscan and mine aligned all the time or whatever. No worries though. Peruse a killboard and look for everyone who dies to concord while in a catalyst. Set those corps/alliances to bad standing so you have help watching local. Being in a more quiet system helps here too, cause it makes it easier to keep tabs on local when you're normally the only one there.
Then there's your fit and system security. A tougher tank and a faster Concord response time (from a higher sec system) both mean the ganker(s) will need more skills, more expensive mods, and/or more accounts involved in order to kill you. Even a covetor can stand up to a few catalysts without dying if you're mining in a .9 and rocking the best tank you can fit, let alone a procurer with just a DCU II as its only tank in a .9. Other options: ECM mids and/or ECM drones; it's pretty easy to jam a catalyst, and that is probably all it will take to ensure Concord kills them before they kill you. The higher sec system ores are just as good as the .5 ones nowadays (I think?), so the only con to the MUCH faster concord response times is that the asteroids are a bit smaller and pop quicker.
There's a ton of other tricks, but these are most of what I've employed when I've mined in high sec to never even be targetted by a ganker, let alone actually killed by one. |

Code gankers aren' the smartest bunch. They tend to roam the same places day in day out. They are predictable. They avoid confrontation with non-miners.
Do as every one else mentioned; find a null-sec region, watch your dscan, add gankers to your contact list. Bookmark the crap out of systems you mine in. Gankers can't be everywhere at once. |

Preparation goes a long way when starting to mine in a new location. Next time you should probably ask your fellow compliant miners first "who owns this place?" and "what is the local law if I want to mine here?". Obviously in your caste the answes are: "James 315 and the New Order of Highsec" and "follow the New Halaima Code of Conduct and get a minjng permit".

From my personal experience, the gank rate has been 0% for the last 9 years.

Yeah, these players move around to different systems, but there are plenty of systems that they don't visit because they are relatively inactive, actually. The EVE universe is big, I'm sure we can all find a safe isolated corner of the galaxy, curl up with a good mining ship and extract some ores.
