Crap, wrote a whole lot and it vanished. Some things never change.
Quote: Hellmar told me that this was a suggestion that has popped up several times in the past. He said, "It is not that difficult to do and has been suggested over and over, but the [web-based] skill training bit is not gonna happen. I think. We don't need ways to have players not play."
Who defines 'playing' as requireing a stationary comp at home?
I did an informal study about mobile applications, and considered Eve. That is, playing Eve, through the mobile phone. Alternative methods do not compete with conventionsl, big desktop game playing, but can compliment it.
I concluded that the only neccessity of the game requireing proper immersion which is inappropiate for your mobile phone, or PDA, is the actual space flying bit, which people want to be home and have a big computer for.
But the rest, I didnt see any wrong with being able to 'play' eve remotely, be it training, flipping through the stock market selections isnt much different from any menu that can be made on a mobile phone, or with advancing technologies, it wouldnt that hard to surf to a webbased Eve interface. People could give an SMS message to command their character to take interbus. People wont have to feel that they have to rush home, just to make one click and then go drink coffee.
Eve the game becomes more integrated into peoples everyday life, instead of reading the paper, sleeping on the train, staring at nothing during long bus rides, they can flip on Eve through their cell phone and do basic, routine commands. People play the most stupidiest simplest games on their cell phones, so why not Eve. Customers wouldnt have to 'pause' their subscription when they go on holiday.
I was actually thinking along the same lines. Soon a game that allows people to interact with various aspects remotely through smartphone or pda technology will emerge. When it does it will revolutionise the way people view online gaming. When such a game appears it will become iconic simply because of the unique level of accessibility offered.
More importantly than all of that though, I will be able to access it on my pda while soaking in the bath!
Unfortunately, even though it would seem that eve is possibly the most suitable mmorpg for this type of access, I fear it will not take advantage of it.
Some people talk about doing stuff 'out of game', but they are looking at things the wrong way. It isn't a case of allowing 'out of game' access, it is making the game bigger so it encompasses this aspect.
