I just wanted to say thank you from an ol' Texan with graphical OCD... lol... I understand that most will say "if you can see your ship, you are playing wrong". However, I will also play while being able to see my ship as I love my graphics. With that said, the updates with the anti-aliasing are outstanding. The engine exhaust effects, shields, armor, and many various other items you have added to the game has made my day... I have to say that I died a little when I found out the new camera was pushed back again.. hehe
Anywho, if you guys are ever in Texas the drinks are on me! Below are some screenshots while messing around. ~Enjoy~

They definitely deserve praise, the game gets prettier each patch.
Current one is excellent, so many great new features. A few little details here and there need tweaking but thats to be expected. |

I have also noticed when warping to a gate, PoS, or station they come into view a lot further out adding to the entire warping effect and they don't simply pop into view like it use to do sometimes. I know larger grids might be a very simple thing to overlook but those kinds of things matter to me and it just looks cool... lol...
It is just me or does Eve seem different now? By that I mean it runs very smooth, and the transitions from warp seem very fluid compared to what it was. I don't know what they did, but I like it... hahaha... |

Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen seem to have based a big part of their marketing around their oh-so-amazing graphics. But if you put EVE up against both those games, I think Eve looks just as good, if not better, both technically and aesthetically.
Plus you get a game that you can actually play and has enormous depth and challenges at all levels.

Yeah there are a few battleship NPC's in WH space that are "op yo" as well that have allowed me to see the new effects as well... hahaha I've been attempting to get some good screenshots of a "battle scene" so to speak. However, the camera system we have now and using the parent/interest has been somewhat frustrating to get what I'm after... lol... I'm hoping the new camera system we have been waiting for will make things easier to get really good shots. |

The visuals of eve and fine details mean a lot to me as a player. My eve is an experience more than just the gameplay. It is the atmosphere the art creates that really ties me to the character and to the play.

In terms of ship and environment design, EVE wins.
In terms of graphical effects, it doesn't have very much room to flex. It's making a good effort at keeping up for a game thats existed more than a decade now, but its definitely not the top of the food chain.
Still it could be much worse and they are making all the right moves, perhaps not at the speed we would prefer. |

If you implement those ship explosions that you released at last fanfest then that will certainly blow the remaining competition out the water. I've been looking forward to those since they were released.

Well, I'll give the Legion some praise where it's deserved: they know how to party.
And Eve's visual direction has certainly gotten better over the years. It's definitely light years more gorgeous than it was back in Dominion when I first decided to give Eve's trial a chance. It's even better when you realize it's only gonna get better from here on out, just as it has. I big thumbs up to CCP on this one.

Darwin could expand into far more technical ground but you should know that the eve you see today is not exactly the eve you saw in 2003. CCP does an absolutely impressive amount of "backroom" upgrades to its code which has rendered eve 2015 basically a brand new game.
It would be a mistake to the extreme to assume that EVE:Online 2015 is anything less than a top tier GFX engine. Considering the game is for space ships(which typically have terrible gfx) EVE has gfx technology that rivals top tier FPS games. THAT... is impressive. |

Background is looking much better after this morning. You now have to squint your eyes and look real hard to find any imperfections, and the kind of "haze" overlap on some portions of the skybox (the areas with obvious lack of visible starlight) are actually growing on me a little: makes it seem like New Eden is hugging close to some nebulae where some parts of space are cloaked in areas of dark, inactive pockets.
Now, I'm just waiting for sub caps to begin leaving behind actual ship carcasses like the caps and supers do instead of the current instant-ship-turned-into-generic-wreck system we have now.
Though I still miss the old Torp effects...ah, good times!

Kuronaga I once had the pleasure of being on site during the last few tests conducted in 1991. Even if you cant physically see the boom.. god damn you learn exactly how insignificant you are when one of those suckers goes off. It's worse when you then understand pointedly what the nuclear ball of fire in the sky represents and how utterly insignificant mankind is on a universal scale.
Harrison Tato wrote:Rath Blazit wrote:Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen seem to have based a big part of their marketing around their oh-so-amazing graphics. But if you put EVE up against both those games, I think Eve looks just as good, if not better, both technically and aesthetically.

I'll take that bet and prove it to ya. Starcitizen Screenshot 1 Starcitizen Screenshot 2 Starcitizen Screenshot 3
EVE Online Citidels
Take a look at these 4 screenshots. A vast majority of people will say the third screenshot for starcitizen is the best. They would be incorrect however. Even counting in game eve screenshots the raw model detail of eve online is fantastic. CCP Art team actually adds in the little things that cross the boundaries between visual realism and expected realism. Examples are the pipes and smaller etcetera on models. I will admit on a texture level EVE is a little dated.. but this is a performance issue that the art team has been slowly correcting.
There are reasons for this advantage to eve online. Most importantly is that eve ships and stations don't function like other games. There is no volume information compared to other methods of space simulation. Thankfully this isn't an issue since EVE is a captains simulation not a flight sim. Practically however this means that even for an MMOG CCPs art team have access to far more resources than a game that has to worry constantly about collisions, mass, and positional data.
The reason starcitizen "looks" more advanced is much the same way the original homeworld "looked" so advanced. In homeworlds day things like bump mapping was a new thing and people saw the gfx trickery and immediately thought it was a more complex model. Base Bump Displacement Compare Parallax Why bump Is good Not a screenshot.. but a good read These links show various methods of adding complexity without essentially adding physical complexity and why a game might "look" more advanced without being more advanced graphically. Here are some PBR Examples. EVE typhoon Notice how the material goes from a flat texture to a ceramic metal without actually altering the texture. Of course this can be done poorly as Fallout 4 has done... Codsworth with crappy metal materials And these items have jack and squat done to them to utilize PBR
TLDR EVE Online with higher end textures would absolutely sink anything anyone else is currently producing or has produced. The structure of EVE online allows for considerably more resources to be devoted to graphics than other games. StarCitizen looks the way it does because of careful screenshot placement and an extensive amount of background trickery as well as vastly limited objects on any particular field(you wont see 3000 ship on screen in StarCitizen.. Ever.) |

Yes I agree
The best bit about the changes is that one notices new things all the time.
For instance, the other day I noticed a cyclone on a temp planet, and I couldn't decide if the effect had always been there or if it was new, and just decided that it looked great, and was new.
My one quibble would be the inertia modeling, and the timing of the engine effect.. but this is minor compared to the cracking paintwork, the shield effects, the armour effects, and the general beautifying of the environment in which we play.
Three thumbs up from me... on account of dodgy jump clone accident.... |
