I was getting bored with seeing them hanging around yesterday, so decided to antagonise them a bit:-
1. Make a bookmark of anything at all. 2. Rename it. 'LOL @ Ore Thief' works quite well.![Very Happy](/images/icon_biggrin.gif) 3. Open P+P. Drag the BM to your cargo. 4. Start mining. Jettison the BM. 5. Rename the jetcan to a timestamp. About 30 minutes ago works best...they think it'll be loaded. 6. Sit and wait........then laugh when they turn up and cunningly try to steal your BM.

I prefer this:
1. Bring some friends in stealth bombers and start jetcan mining. 2. Have your buds cloak, sitting and waiting for an ore thief to show up. 3. Once the ore thief takes some ore have your friends uncloak and blast the bugger away. ![YARRRR!!](/images/icon_pirate.gif)

1. Jettison a can full of ore with your hauler in a busy system. 2. Go sit next to it in a pvp-fitted Osprey. (A single mining laser will add credibility, but isn't required.) 3. ?????? 4. Profit! --

I like that idea... Have the Stealth Bomber leave a bunch of cans (so he gets the kill rights) and put time stamps on them, and mine. Cloak. Thief takes can - uncloak and nuke him ![YARRRR!!](/images/icon_pirate.gif)

Brutor, your original idea won't work. You've got to kiss a lot of toads before you find a princess; there's nothing annoying in opening a miner's can and finding it empty, because that happens a lot already. Plenty of cans that recently got emptied by the hauler have a placeholder bookmark or bit of garbage in them. Just part of the "aggressive salvage" business.
Some of these other ideas would be more effective; I especially like the patient gang of stealth bombers. That, too, would fall under the "cost of doing business" rubric, but it, at least, would be unexpected. (For all the talk of "defend your cans", in my experience it's tough to get combat pilots to wait around for very long within support range of a mining op, and it doesn't happen very often in secure space.)

Edited by: Shinji Seto on 14/01/2007 16:24:16 I had a fun little run in the other day with an ore thief. I was jet can mining in my retriever and the thief came up to my can and started to empty it. Little did he know that things like flashing reds in my overview give me a boner. So I quietly collected my drones, docked, grabbed a Jag, undocked found him and popped him. He Then says "GF, but I can't let you get away with that". So while I'm looting his wreck I get locked, scrambled, webbed and NOS'ed. I see his little Thrasher, smile, turn on my guns and send him floating home in a pod once again. A few seconds later he says in local "Oh, I didn't notice you were flying an assualt frig". That ore thief really made my day, as I hate mining and only do it to keep enough ore on hand to make my own ammo and T1 ships!

The way i see it ore theft is a legitimate and dangerous in game criminal occupation. The fact of the matter is most people dont do anything to prevent it. want to stop an ore thief?
Mine in a battleship/bc/cruiser that carries drones, fit scramblers/webbers/scan boost to your midslots and watch your overview/surroundings.
Your worst enemy is not the ore thief but your own inatentiveness (did i make that word up?)
I can use mining barges and i have an alt who can haul and use cloaks, while im filling the can he sits next to me in a cloaked cruiser, to kill belt rats and ore thieves, then when the can is full he hauls it back. --------------------------------------- Carpe Pugya Pyga - Seize the Buttocks

I did this to an ice thief, does it count?
1) Grab your trusty Stealth Bomber. 2) Fly to an ice belt. Buy 1 (one) unit of ice from a miner there. 3) Transfer said ice into your can, right next to the miner. 4) Cloak and wait.

Edited by: TxShadow on 15/01/2007 15:32:04 The other day I was mining on my alt with my Retriever, and was hauling with my main here sitting right by them.
I keep 1 unit of pyroxeres in the can to keep it alive, and just insta-transfer all of the newly mined ore into the can, and switch game windows and pull it into the badger. Total time of transfer, about 4 seconds.
Well, some ore thief in a Ibis comes flying up and steals the 1 unit of Pyroxeres keeping the can alive.
He made it out because my alt's drones are not too powerful, so even 5x light scouts cant kill a Ibis in enough time, but he did take some nice damage.
I hope he enjoyed the whole 30 ISK that he got out of that "one" unit of pyroxeres lol!!! (should note the badger was carrying over 19,000).

The OP's idea of wasting the ore thieves time with spammed jetcans throughout the system is probably one of the better ones.
Sure you'll get some results with your stealth bombers and untalented ore thieves, but you are up against pro ore thieves to, and you will not get time to lock on with your bombers.
Additionally, some thieves just bring a load of muscle.
Point is, there isn't one single solution, but the time waste cans spangled throughout a systems will slow down most ore thievery. Through clever knowledge of your local thieves you may find you can refine your technique with can names and amounts left inside them to really maximise the slow down. It might well be better to leave a few hundred m3 of velds in them instead of baiting BM's.

Now I like a snipey comment on the forums as much as the next guy, so....
Secure Cans that havn't been visited for years.... Abandoned Rookie Ships and Shuttles. I don't know why they do this, but they do....
And quite how spammed jetcans, lifespan 2 hours max, are worse than the hundreds of wrecks that appear in systems is beyond me.
Apart from that, nicely thought out reply.

In this scenario, the funniest part is the miner who sits in a belt not mining with a bookmark in a jet can. I think the miner in this case thinks that he and his mining barge are the center of the universe for any particular ore thief. Well ore thieves have very limited attention spans. Besides you sitting in that system and belt, there are mining ops going all around in vicinity. Experienced ore thieves work efficiently. They are not going to sit with you there 1/2 hour and stare at your non-mining process. So you will not be wasting anyone's time but your own It might be funny for you to watch the thief open up an empty can, but for the thief it is just one in the line of many.
As far as stealth bombers go, I have heard an account of someone escaping a small group with a pre-aligned hauler. I am sure a pack of bombers would be effective against ore thieves who get careless enough and forget to align prior to taking stuff out of the can. If the thief comes in something frig-sized and pre-aligns before flipping your can, good luck grabbing a lock on him.

Lock on time will be horrible. Plenty of time for the ore thief to warp away.

There are some big flaws in alot of the 'methods' being described here. One is that any ore thief worth his salt, is going to be aligned and almost in warp when he flips/grabs the can, so before you can lock him, he is in warp ready to insta dock or jump out of system. The other is cloaking. Last time I checked there is a sensor recalibration time after disabling the cloak where you cannot lock targets, this time is plenty for a thief to get out with the ore, or if you de-cloak before he gets to the can, he will just leave the ore alone and leave. The next is that most ore thieves are running WCS, so they come in to belt and grab your can, you try to scramble them, and they warp off anyway. From my experience, the best way to alleviate the problem of ore theft is to either not mine in highsec, or if you DO have to mine in highsec, mine right into the hauler. If you don't want to pay for a 2nd account, then make friends with someone who will haul for you. Jet a bookmark, mine up a pulse of ore, move it to can then the hauler immediately moves to his cargo. The only time any ore will accumulate is when the hauler has to go dump the load, which if you are in a barge, you should be able to keep the ore in your hold long enough for the hauler to get back to belt. Either way, if a theif does happen by while the hauler is away, he only gets a few minutes worth of loot anyway, not really any big deal. -=^=-
