Very interesting food for thought. No ironies. I might be a stinky carebear and a grumpy bittervet, but that article just gives me hope for the future of EVE. Just look at the awesome graphs on how pvp damage and ship destruction have skyrocketed with Phoebe.
TL;DR of the article: the EVE of "a few big events meaningful for the news" may be gone, but is being replaced by a exciting new EVE of "lots of small events with big meaning for the players".
CCP Seagull: "EVE should be a universe where the infrastructure you build and fight over is as player driven and dynamic as the EVE market is now".
62% of players: "We're not interested. May we have Plan B, please?"
CCP Seagull: "What Plan B?"

His first sentence is already a lie, that whole piece is coloured to the extreme and full of half truths and full-on lies, that's probably why you like it so much. It's also written by a 2 year old player who plays in low sec.
Just because the article is, on the surface, positive doesn't change the fact that it's silly. |

It's very clear that the game belongs to full time players in an epic sense, how ever you slice that pie up. To participate would require a person invest far too much real life time in a simple space game.
Eve is clearly not designed for solo players to create a meaningful experience beyond the next ship to fly, so to think beyond that just gets frustrating, really!
It's merely a place holder game until the Elephant in the Room is completed and then this game will fully belong to those that love the social aspect of the conversation of EVE Online. Most Vets don't even login game much, but rather talk about it, defend it, or troll the forums.
It's a cool game in doses of a few months at a time and best served with a brand new character each play through. |

Tarek has ably and thoroughly expressed what I've been trying to say almost since Phoebe was released.
And vindicated what Marlona, Manny, I and many others were saying before as well.

Well. Allow me to retort.
EVE began, and grew, blossomed then ballooned. The ones with the imagination, wherewithal and resources to pursue the game a certain way did. With that you saw the creation of the massive online library of information still with us today. However, no new such "content" has been generated, or ever will be generated, by a new cadre of players populating the game today.
One feature of this new cadre is the desire to not pay money for the game - PLEXing players. They go game to game looking for free to play, and have found it in a form here. Well, one of the reasons for this is, these aren't the same enterprising people who made up the initial cadre who had resources and were wiling to spend them in this worthy cause. You'll see the more the game changes, the more obsolete third party resources will become.
This is because, this new cadre of players CCP decided it needed to pander to (probably because all other games are doing it too...and due to a certain study done a few years ago showing stats with regard to F2P/MT business models) aren't enterprising people at all. They are people who think small. Just look at their favored play style - learn as little as possible, get the cheapest ship possible, attack the least defensible in hopes of hitting a jackpot of some sort.
The "epic" EVE was built by people in for the long haul who left almost to a man, leaving us with a pair of holey mittens as our paradigm of virtue - who immediately enCODED the game into a playstyle matching his attention span - relatively non-existent. C'est la vie? Maybe so.
The great blue blob we once knew as BOB was just the shell of the apex of the epic EVE. When the coalition of bullies blew through it effortlessly erasing it from the map (then heroically congratulated themselves for their effort and "skill") the place was empty. The builders of the blue blob had left long before it was attacked by these brave souls who then invented RENTING. Renting, of course, was a mafia-style protection racket, which was further elaborated by the pedestrian, and tawdry James Whatever Code cool kids.
So yeah. Epic EVE ended years ago. It won't return, because the sort of people who'd be that resourceful, far reaching and inventive have been replaced by the "content creating" gankers. The reason EVE isn't dying - it already died. This is the zombie EVE they keep pumping electricity into and making excuses for.
Take a look at the names of the people who get on this thread and claim this isn't so. Things are not what they seem.
There just isn't anything that can be said!

"Epic EVE" at its apex barely concerned to 10% of the players online, and usally far less than that. If the only reason to give money to CCP was a chance to be in that 10%, then the game is dead since that reason is gone.
Yet when the reasons to give money to CCP are unique personally fulfilling experiences, part of EVE is walking in that direction. All in all, giving money to CCP is a personal decission. Nobody gives money to a company just because he is a part of 10,000 guys doing the same.
You may claim that mammals are silly, but dinosaurs are effectively going extinct. They have won the game into boredom and ultimately irrelevance.
The point is that little furry animals are populating the place. Life goes on.

As I stated, his conclusion is positive but his reasoning, "facts" and general statements are very coloured and biased. Besides, you just wanted to make a new "EVE is dying" thread. |

So all those big battles the developers put in the advertisements for this game don't actually happen anymore? Looks like I'm unsubscribing before my trial is up if I wanted PvE I would play Borderlands 2 or something. |

Now they just need to sort PvE/Highsec!
I'd like to see PvP data spanning over the year, but I'm not looking this gift horse in the teeth...

There is still lots to love about the game. But I understand and share the sentiment. CCP imposed a "small gang/solo" type system on null sec, which is great if you like that, but sucks if you don't. Since Phoebe I've been in maybe 3 or 4 good sized fights, the kind that gets my blood pumping, sitting on the edge of my seat, hoping to BoB that the logi guys hear my prayers and rep me in time to save me.
But most of the time, fights are just kitey "keep away" style engagements that are mostly un-fulfilling content for someone who likes epic battles. For me, the good thing is that I mostly play for the PVE, but I still feel like EVE has lost something with this new focus on 'small, local engagements'. |

I think that's been the vision for a long time. Yeah the big "Star Wars climactic battle scenes" in Eve might be on the way out. But they never truly delivered anyway. Lag and now TiDi fests abound. Though the latter is better. It used to be "black screen then clone vat" now at least you can fire a salvo, go out and get a beer at the pub, come back and hit F1 on the next target, go order a pizza, select and fire on the next target, go spend some time with your imaginary girlfriend, etc.

We had a big battle not three weeks ago involving 2 titan kills, several carrier kills, and hundreds of sub-cap kills. It took place in Martoh and it was epic. |

No, that's not what's happening and the title of the article is misleading.
- I find the title misleading, because "epic" is in the eye of the beholder. Do you define "epic" by the number of ships involved, by the size of those ships, by the ISK value destroyed, by the amount of activity you had ? There has never been just one way to do battles, mainly because of the different mechanics of high, low, null-sec, wormholes, faction warfare.
- If you think that big fleet fights won't happen anymore, you're mistaken. Sure there is a push to design combat mechanics in a way to force individual pilots to be more active than just targeting the primary and hitting F1, but as long as big alliances can field several hundreds of players, they will continue to do so. War ... war never changes, but the meta does.
- We're also waiting for Citadels and the changes to capital ships to be completed. We'll see how it will change the use of capital ships.
- With the recent increase of grid size (that is the range at which you can see and click on ships in space and on your overview), it's likely that more of the fights will happen in visual range. Before we used to warp to bookmarks outside of the grid range during fights if we needed to change tactical positions. That should enhance the "epic" visual aspect but also allow the opposing fleet to adjust their tactics quicker.
