Unless you roll straight in with a heavy knowledge of the game and a fat wallet, I can't imagine joining this game fresh and enjoying it. That initial grind is just no fun. I think the late game grind is the real killer. Potentially investing a years skilling in to a ship you may not even use *cough*naglfar*cough* Yeah but at least by then you have 3 million other things to do. Early on you're waiting for skills any time you want to change direction, you have no idea about mechanics and you're being farmed and scammed by veteran players at every turn until you figure out what you're doing. All while paying for a sub because you don't have a stockpile of isk. As a vet, I can do pretty much any activity without additional training, I know pretty much every trick that people while try to use against me so I don't get caught out and I've got so much isk laying around that I can do absolutely nothing to gain more isk and still remain subbed on multiple accounts for my skills to tick over for the foreseeable future.
I think the game is kind of undergoing growth pains from something it used to be, in to what it will be in the future. Sion's editorial piece about his diminished relevance in the CSM not withstanding, the game is changing and not everyone can handle that.
I think I burnt out ages ago. Not due to the status quo but due to ingrained problems with eve that result ironically in people like me and you.

I would have, a few years ago, because of the seemingly (as far as virtual societies go) unparalleled depth of the emergent behavior in Eve Online.
But it seems that nowadays that side of the game is somewhat in decline, possibly due to attracting a new generation of players drawn in by other things than the earlier ones. It feels a bit 'flat' to me because very few unknowns remain, whereas in early years, very little was known, explained or modeled about the game, it's mechanics and player behavior.
Referencing Bartle: explorers and socializers seem to be on a relative decline compared to winners and achievers. |

Frankly the chances that a player likes this game and enjoys it for a long time are so slim that there's no point to recommend it... v-¦v
Now, I read Nozy's article as soon as it was published and decided that the new officer can be a good asset to CCP if she does what Nozy points. I've been saying for a long while that CCP needs to engage actively the players through demographically meaningful personal interviews, but failing that, just actively engaging ALL players with polls is better than the current mix of "let the players speak out" and server data mining.
EVE players are not just people who play this game. They're people who give money to CCP every month, and CCP sometimes doesn't seems to be aware of that fact... specially when highsec and PvE are concerned.
CCP Seagull: "EVE should be a universe where the infrastructure you build and fight over is as player driven and dynamic as the EVE market is now".
62% of players: "We're not interested. May we have Plan B, please?"
CCP Seagull: "What Plan B?"

um, you do know you cna share your overview with yoru friends now right? so you set it up, save it, drag it to a chat window and they cna add it there overview. takes then about 3 seconds.
telling them what to buy is also easy... make a ship fitting, drag and drop it to the chat window, and iirc there is a 'buy all' button now (note i coudl be utterly wrong on this point, i'm a bit tired)
or you just drag the items to the chat window, they click the links, and chose find in market from the menu in the upper left and buy. would take you and them maybe 20 min to buy and set up a ship.
So your complaints are invalid.

Vast majority of people dont want to play a game like Eve because they have to wait, think and figure things out for themselves in a way thatll make them fail more times than succeed. IMO this literally weeds out 90% of the school system educated "followers", "nonthinkers" and regurgitaters that come out of those systems. Most people want fun and for them fun means winning at everything instantly and easily. Level 90 in 2-3 weeks type players that dont actually contribute to anything or build anything. And when that reality sets in that OMG its gonna take SOOO LOOONG!! to do things they just instinctively give up and go do something where they can feel good about themselves.
So no I dont recommend Eve to people anymore. Id love to but the majority of society these days are already walking zombies and Im always reminded of that great line from the movie.... "I see dead people!!" And that isnt something CCP can change imo.
I have always loved the sink or swim mentality of Eve. Most just dip a toe in and say its too cold to go swimming at all.

I prefer longevity (depth) over fast pace. Depth is EVE endgame that doesnt really end anywhere. If CCP will crumble and give way to "faster, faster" people, they will soon disapear, and EVE with them.

Unsuccessful At Everything wrote:Quote: One observation that caught my attention was that DICE relied too much on the forums for feedback and that a better system was needed. The solution that DICE came up with was the Net Promoter Score. Sigh, the death of one of my loves of Eve, and the return of my nemesis from my Insurance company days. I always recommend Eve to people. The only problem i run into is that people are more tempted towards the instant gratification games where you can buy endgame gear and a lvl gorillion character from the cash shop, or games where you can 720 backflip no-scope headshot a guy off the eiffel tower and then land in the pilot seat of a jet and bomb a freaking shark. Now, if CCP were to bring Legion and Valkyrie to the table as well ( you know, having all games playable across a single platform and all that jazz), there would be a much better draw for newer players as you would be satisfying the FPS/Flight itch as well as the sandbox itch.. but alas we digress into repeated bludgeoning of a deceased equine with that, especially if we were to want them to be integrated into Eve in order to compete with SC when its released in 2024 [ bludgeoning intensifies]. Eve is a sandbox of epic proportions where there is room for the good, the bad, the in-between, and god forbid.. the bloody neutrals. EVE: Legion copyright was dropped months ago.
Something tells me that with how all CCP responses to Valkyrie questions make sure to point out they have no plans to connect Valkyrie to EVE, it's unlikely the EVE Universe concept is still something they're pushing toward as much as they were in 2014.
That's actually part of why all of us on the Dust 514 forums have been pushing #portDust514 on both forums and all the social media that CCP uses to try and show solidarity in our interest for news on the future of the game, since after the Legion announcement CCP's new policy in regard to that game is to tell us absolutely nothing until whatever they're currently working on is done.
Back on topic, I recommend EVE Online to people who say they love online gaming but want a world where what they do matters more. The funny thing about big ticket titles like Destiny is that after the fresh new content has been played and the game goes back into that kind of lull between updates, it's those players that I most frequently hear saying they wish there was "more".

Don't let interactions like this become only a memory.
