Just wondering eve's current numbers. I looked at http://www.mmogchart.com/ but it seems out of date, couldnt find anything with google either. Considering eve was almost at 150k July 06, Im guessing maybe 200, 250k or so? ___

The last number was actually around 125,000. So jumping to 200,000 is a 60% jump, which doesn't follow the trends so far. EVE is more of a slow but steady growth population.
Here's the past few datapoints from his Excel charts, with the % increase over the prior metric.
Jan-069094013.16% Feb-06989438.80% Mar-061047895.91% Apr-0611650811.18% May-061203543.30% Jun-061256254.38%
The average growth was about 7.8% over that range. Using the last 2 points though, we could guesstimate a 4% increase. So I'd personally guess around 130,000 to 134,000 players next time he posts his charts (4% to 7.8% growth).

id say yeah based on a 15-20% always online during peak time of total numbers that 140-150k would be a good approximation that doesnt include the china server either

The general rule is 20% of the subcriber base is online at peak time, so an easy math here is 34000 / 0,2 = is give or take 174k subcribers. Of course the trial accounts are included, so you can take like 10k or 15k from that number.

We have just over 156k subscriptions and an average of 15k active trial accounts as of the reported metrics at the beginning of the month. There were 34,420 players logged in on Tranquility Sunday afternoon.
Sir Bruce, the owner of mmogchart.com is a great guy. Yes, it has been a while since his chart was updated, but there are a number of companies that are unwilling to supply subscriber metrics. He does, however, receive monthly updates from CCP.

Well, if we go by what I have seen to be the average number of accounts that the average multiple account user runs, then we could say that the average person has 3 accounts, so that would give a user base of about 52k people.
I pulled those numbers out of my, err, hat mind you. -=^=-

I doubt that the "average" is 3 accounts per person; there are quite a few people with only one account, and that will cancel out those with 3. I'd place the "average" at 1.8 or so accounts per person, so 80k people. Some might be related, like husband-wife teams, dunno. Maybe 70k households.

So the actual population in WoW is something like 4.5 million players and 3.5 million gold farmers.

I would call 8 Million WoW subscribers in one spot a perfect training target for a doomsday device.
And EVE will never get as many subscribers as WoW for many reasons:
1. CCP is not spending more money on marketing than on game development (as Blizzard does) 2. EVE does not stand on the back of 3 offline games, to give it a good hype. 3. EVE is not designed to fit for everyone. 4. You loose something in PvP (a concept that is absolutely horrifying to the average WOWbear)
There are likely many other reasons, why EVE will never have as many players as WoW, but to me the more important question would be... "SHOULD CCP try to turn EVE into a game, that will attract 8 million subscribers ?"
To me that is a clear "NO !!". I would not want EVE to appeal to 8 million subscribers, as in doing so, EVE would very likely no longer appeal to me.

Does it really make a difference if there is 350k accounts or 3500k accounts. If the space is big enough, and everybody wont play at the same time anyway...

so true, ccp encourages and forces players to induce grief, so it is basicly a terroist training ground.

I was actually thinking whether to add something snappy after saying 'utopia' but nothing came to mind and I couldn't be bothered to change it. Thinking about it, EvE contains significantly less kids than WoW. Definitely less 8 year olds from Holland screaming about being aggro'd too soon. Heh.
EvE would never gain 8million subscribers as the game is too complex for the average joe. EvE elitism 4tw! * * * *

EVE still got the most players on a single server!
8m players, spread out at maybe 10-20k on each server, with maybe 3-5k online at a time isn't that impressive.

200k players? How is that even possible? I know that CCP has the largest server cluster super computer thing from any MMO out there so I doubt that. IN any case, I don't want to be the three-thousandth in que to jump to Jita...

A lot of WoW is instanced. So it's like going to a complex in eve and being in your own complex (own CPU on server).

All I know is they could triple their number of accounts if they would just fix a lot of the little bugs and annoying things in the game. Some very easily fixed bugs, some changes to the more reptitive boring aspects of the game such as farming or mission grinding, and this game would be way way more popular.

Yup. And instead, they nerf missions to give less loot. In favour of the lp farmers. Who alreadz have all the phat loot. How surprising that things change in favour of the already rich.

Indeed, if I were to guess, my estimation would easily be twice as much, meaning more than 40% of eve players having more than 1 accounts.
