Edited by: Bach Atreides on 18/01/2007 15:51:28 I've really been spending a lot of time lately running around gathering salvagable wrecks and was wondering what ships people use for this. I think I have a pretty decent setup but I'm sure someone has the ultimate salvage ship and I'd like to see what they use.
My Catalyst named "Bone Collector":
High: 2X Small Tractor Beams 4X Salvage Modules 2X 150mm Scout Railguns w/ Antimatter
Med: 1X Small Shield Booster 1X Cold Gas Arcjet Thrusters
Small: 1X Small Armor Repairer 1X (Some sort of Range Booster-I think) - I'm at work.... 1X Random Hardener maybe?
I fit a couple of guns and 1 Tech II Drone to fight off any rat frigates that spawn nearby while picking up the goods. If I fit too many salvage/tractor beams, my capacitor goes to crap. The six modules going at the same time will eventually drain me, but I can hold it for a while....

I use a Cormorant for salvaging, but I use it post-missions so no risk of respawns. I use Corm both because I'm Caldari, and for the 450m3 cargohold. Setup is:
High: 4x Salvager I 2x Small Tractor Beam 2x Named 150mm Railgun (for popping cans or whatever I might need) Medium: 1x 1MN Microwarpdrive 3x 'Barton' Cap Recharger Low: 1x Capacitor Power Relay ---

I've recently noticed that Destroyers are uber salvagers. At least when it comes to missions, where enemies don't respawn.. Fit 6 salvagers on one and you're set. I use 6 salvagers, cap recharger and a 10mn AB (causes the ship to overshoot a bit if not shut down) on the Thrasher. Eats a lot of cap but manages to hold with the charger. Makes salvaging a bit faster when you have 50 shipwrecks to clear out. -------------------

My Catalyst, which I call 'Mathom' - the word that Hobbits use for useless junk in LOTR - is only intended for completed missions, so I fit no weapons. Mine is:
High: 4 x Tractors 4 x Salvagers
Med: 1 x Eutectic cap recharger 1 x AB
Small: 3 x Cargohold expanders
I can just about run 3 salvagers constantly, and 4 for short periods. I am considering replacing the AB with another cap recharger, as I tend to use the AB little given that in the time taken to drag a wreck in from 20km, I am usually in range of the next one, etc.

Destroyers are great at this. I use a thrasher with 4 small tractor beams and 4 salvagers. I haul in 4, steer to the 5th while the salvagers churn on the stuff in my wake. Can clear a field of debris lickity-split. Put in a few cargo expanders, an afterburner (for use in deadspace areas), maybe a capacitor battery or cap recharger, and good to go.

Edited by: Bach Atreides on 18/01/2007 16:08:16 Yeah, I think I'll put on a power relay on mine too. The reason I don't put a microwarpdrive on mine is because it won't work in mission complexes. (Although it works great if you're cleaning up the loot in asteroid belts.)

1. Bookmark one of the cans on the edge of the can-field in your deadspace. 2. Return to agent and complete mission. 3. Travel to previous system in Salvage Destroyer. 4. Warp to Bookmark. 5. Happily MWD around the can field and collect much more quickly.
That's what I do, at least.
EDIT: Didnt notice the 'complexes' part. Yeah, I guess that would be one shortcoming. ---

High: 4x Salvager I 3x Small Tractor Beam empty slot Medium: 1x Gist AB 3x 'Barton' Cap Recharger Low: 1x Cargo Expander
I run almost the same as above quote (modified), had a spare Gisti AB laying around so slapped it on. Still not satisfied with the setup, as the same ship is used for looting. Main runs missions in a CNR so stopping to loot is not an option. Looking for a decent loot boat that has roughly 2k cargo and can fit and run 4x salvagers and 3x tractor beams.

Damn, 2000 cargo? You're looking at a much bigger ship than a destroyer. If you want to use a BC or Battleship, you're going to be there all day trying to get in range of the next can. I don't think there are medium or large tractor beams (I haven't seen them) with ranges in excess of 20km.

Yeah, I don't see any easy way of getting such a large amount of cargo space, although a balance of Nanofibres+Expanders and a MWD might make it doable. ---

Hmm..thanks for quick replies guys. Using the Badger II for loot prior to salvaging have me spoiled on cargo space. Gurista EA (all 6 stages) looted completely without having to dock and then just jump right onto next mission and continue to loot.
Maybe some obscure cruiser have decent cargo space...the search will continue...

Thrasher
4x Tractors, 4x Salvagers 1x AB, 2 cap recharge 2x nanofiber hull thingies 3x salvage tackle rigs
Salvages like a pro. Only downside is that you need to come back after some missions because the loot + salvage will exceed the cargo capacity. FOR THE EMPEROR!

Browsed a bit, and may have a (partial) solution.
Cyclone
High: 4x Salvager 4x Tractor Beam Medium: 1x 10MW MWD 4x Cap Recharger Low: 4x Cargo Expander
Would have ~900 cargo using Expander I's. With rigs it would maybe come closer to 2000m3. Downside of this setup is the low non-MWD speed and the higher inertia from being a battlecruiser.
Might be worth considering for your purposes though. ---

So using Tech 2 expanders I get 1225, 2 rigs and I get 1600 roughly...hmm...seems like it will move slower than a snail...might have to continue to loot with the Badger, dock and salvage with the Comorant. The rigs are really neat and all but the hassle of getting the parts is truly annoying. At least grinding for a CNR offer you see the cash come in and the faction increase....

Make sure to create a bookmark for each of the rooms you have wrecks in, otherwise you will be able to return to only the bookmarked field - the others will be around, but 10,000km away in some direction or other.

If you want an uber salvage ship, don't use a destroyer. I have a Catalyst setup with 5x Salvagers and 3x Tractor beams as well as cargo expanders, MWD and cap recharger. However, it runs out of Capacitor WAY too fast which slows down salvaging.
Instead, use a TEMPEST! The most uber salvager there is :-)
My friend has one fit out with MWD, lows are 1x cargo expander, and the rest are nanos for speed/maneuvering. It turns as fast as a cruiser, has a top speed of 1.6km/s (almost double my catalyst destroyer's top MWD speed btw) and it has like 10x the capacitor. He also has like 5x cap rechargers in the mid slots so he never runs low on cap.
It works way better than the Destroyer if you are willing to spend the iskies.

Overkill much?
In all honesty, I use a Thrasher with little cap trouble, as long as I dont have to run more than a few Salvage cycles consecutively.
3x Tractors 5x Salvager
1x 1MN AB 2x Barton Cap Rechargers
1x Type-E Expander 1x CPR
Tops out at 503 m/s with a 3% speed implant, and can hold about 475 m3 of cargo. 4/4 split might be fine, but I find the extra chance of salvage outweighs the usefulness of a 4th tractor. If you kill targets efficiently while doing the mission, most of your wrecks will be in relatively one place, so movment is a small issue. It's all about management

You could try a Geddon. 4 Salv. 4 Tracs.
1 AB 1 Sensorbooster 1 Caprecharger.(or .. )
3 Nanofibre 5 Cargo expander
Around 1800 ( depends on expander ) raw cargo .. put a Container in .. 2000 cargo .... Speed ~ 135 without AB ..

Tempest still would have a tiny cargo hold...600 raw is not enough and for the training to get into a different race BS, no...not the optimal solution for me....back to L...

Exequror gets a bonus to cargo space. I run one for clearing mission loot with 1xtractor beam, 3xsalvagers, shield tank, AB, 1xnano and 2xbasic cargo expanders. It's got about 1300m3 in the hold and still gets around at a decent speed.

I just finished setting up a Harbringer lvl 4 mission looter salvager:
Hi: 4 tractors 4 salvagers Med: cargo scanner, cap recharge (not that ya need it), AB, MWD Low: 3x cargo expander, 1 nano, 2 intertials
With some OK cargo expanders with the 3 there you're around 7-800 cargo space - more than enough for the smaller missions (the thing turns on a dime like this and over 1K top speed with the mwd), on big loot heavy missions dump an inertial and maybe the nano and you're over 1K cargo space but lose some manueverbility.
Kill it! It's killing me. |

I currently use a thrasher w/ Highs:3x tractor, 5x salvg, Mids: 1ab, 2 cap rechargers, lows: 2x exp cargo. Since I'm in 0.0 and salvaging BS's, I need less tractors and more salveg mods. The problem is even w/ 600+ cargo I run out of space due to 20m3 loot size.
If you want 8 highs and 2k+ cargo, I think the best option is a Hurricane. You get 8 high slots for Salvg/Tractors, running 6x Epx Cargo IIs in lows gives you 2k+ cargo space and unlike a BS, it only requires BC and Mini Cruiser 4(i think). Main problems it has no maneuverability.

I use a mega on for my salvage/loot needs.
my industrial character has maxed skills for salvaging.
X3 salvage I X5 tractor
X1 AB X3 cap recharge
X3 local nanofiber X4 local expanders
X1 salvage rig X2 thruster rig
510 m/s speed, roughly 1800 cargo.
not to shabby.

The Raven makes an excellent salvage boat actually.
I fit 5 Nano's on it and 4 tractors, 4 salvagers. Mids can be whatever. It flies plenty fast... you're generally limited by either your tractors or salvagers anyhow. But with an AB you can hit 600+ m/sec, which is faster than tractors pull stuff in anyhow so you can only use the AB when going between long distance cans.
The Raven has a large base cargo hold as well, so you're getting 700+ cargo capacity without any expanders.

I use a Prowler for new region 0.0 salvaging. Its fast, it can take a few hits from a spawn, and you can stay out there for hours without having to travel 20 jumps back to base.

Thrasher
6x Salvagers 1x Tractor beam
1x MWD 1x Medium Shield Extender II 1x Cap recharger(Named if you can afford it)
2x Inertia Stabs(Named if you can afford it)
Ship does over 2km/s and i can easily salvage faster than my raven can kill spawns. With 6 salvagers on one wreck, i will always salvage on the first Cycle.
My safe spot has a giant secure container which i store salvaged components and decent mods. Next to the container i have a jet can with crap loot that will get refined. I'll refresh the jet can every hour. And after i'm done ratting, i'll haul it with an indy.

I tried the destroyer and found it ran outa cap too much when running 4 tractors and 4 salvagers. I run missions in my Raven and have my alt tag along in her Appoc So my loot rig is
Appoc BS Hi's 4 tractors 4 salvagers
Mid's Named AB Some cap items Lows 7 Nano's (Appoc with 7 nano's aligns and warps out faster than a cruiser) She doesn't get agro'd so tank is not really a problem. If she does get agro she can warp out pretty damned fast. I love this setup. It's fast and has plenty of room for loots and doesn't run outa cap even when sharing it with my Raven. If it's a rough mission I drop a salvager and tractor and throw on a remote shield and cap booster for some backup.
