I don't get why some players have excessive bounties. For example, I saw one guy has a bounty of 200 billion.
I assume he put this bounty on himself as a way of bragging, because otherwise he would just have a friend suicide him to collect the bounty.
So, is the high bounty just sort of a dare to other players to try to kill him? If so, why don't his corp mates just kill him? Is it because he is hiding in station? So, the idea is put a 200 billion bounty on an unplayed alt and then just stuff the alt in a station, is that the idea?

Bounties are fairly pointless. You would do yourself well to not concern yourself with them.
That being said you can only get paid a portion of the value of the ship that he is in so you won't get the 200 Billion. |

I don't think you should be concerned. I have a 50 Mil bounty on me just cause I appeared at a Frost line site and this guy told me to get the **** out of there because it's HIS site. I told him OK ill just help to clear the site with him.. he got angry ... left the site and placed the bounty on me.

To get a 200 billion bounty he would need to lose a 200 billion ship......

The player that kills someone with a bounty on them only gets 20% of the value of the ship and modules destroyed. That comes out of the bounty. Bounties really don't mean much. Sometimes people will do stuff like put the minimum bounty (100k) on randoms just to see if any freak out about it. If you put a bounty on someone, you get a notification when they get killed. Sometimes people put bounties on others just to "subscribe" to their killmails for amusement or to kind of track where they are operating and what kinds of ships they often fly.
The bounty system in general isn't what CCP would probably like or could do. There is no proper bounty-hunting mechanic (unless things have changed in the last few months).
The crazy-high bounties are often merchant / scammer types using high bounties as a form of advertising and/or covering up ("Like my service? Put a bounty on me to show you are a satisfied customer")
Bounties don't mean much, don't worry about them.

People... please verify what you are talking about, before you start talking about it.
As Loyd above mentions, there is no direct 1:1 payout.
The aggressor receives 20% of ANY loss the target occurs, which is subtracted from its bounty pool.

People with really high bounties probably accumulated them (little by little) from others; there's no point to bountying yourself. ISK that's placed into a bounty is pretty much lost, or at least locked out of circulation for a long time, because people either fly cheap ships (recklessly), or fly expensive ships very carefully, so it's either very difficult to catch them, or if you do catch them they're flying a cheap ship and you barely get 50k ISK.

On the other hand can it be quite profitable to blow up a highly bountied carebear in a mission ship. The overall amount of circumstances demands using common sense more than blind ignorance. And you can never know if that 5.0sec afk pod with 100 million isk bounty doesn't have implants.
Another worthy thing to do is using a smartbomb-fitted destroyer where freighters are being blown up. It will wreck your sec, but you will whore on all the bountied gankers within reach.

Bouny payout is 20% of loss value, so redo that math please
It is also why people dont clear it anymore with an alt as it will cost you ISK

as a side note it is kind of funny when you watch the Rooks and Kings pipe bomb videos and see all the notifications of bounty payouts flashing in rapid succession. |

They have a much longer video explaining pipe bombing but this is a short one that I found. If you watch in the upper left-hand corner of the screen you can see the mail notifications of the concord bounty payments. In a situation like that where you are sitting there being the meat grinder with victims coming to you by the dozens I could see bounties adding up to something significant and maybe even noticeable. |

To get a 200 billion bounty he would need to lose a 200 billion ship...... No, he would need to lose a trillion isk ship. not only a trillion isk ship, but a trillion isk ship that the game recognizes as a trillion isk ship. One of the rare empire faction battleships (so like a raven state issue) which might trade for a trillion (or hell more) would probably only count for a tiny fraction of that.
really big bounties, I mostly assume they put them on themselves just to draw attention. or perhaps a friend placed it when they quit for a last laugh.

Free street cred.
It is not as if anyone would base a gank decision on a 50 million bounty anyway. |
