Has anyone measured how much data that is sent/received per hour with a single EVE client running?
The reason I ask is because I consider getting a laptop with a 3G data card, however I have no idea how much data that will be used per hour. Vodafone has restricted the "unlimited" type to about 1GB a month so it would be good to know how many hours of game play would that is equivalent to.
Thanks

Hope it helps.

Seems the cheaper 250MB/month plan will last for nearly 400h of gameplay then, sweet.

Logging in alone can use quite a bit... and warping into deadspace is a one-time 100-200kb hit at a minimum from my experience.

Well this is mainly to let me play during the lunch break at work. No need to browse the web since that can be done before or after lunch.

I will use the 10MBit cable at home for those downloads so the 3G card will only be used for lunch break gaming itself.
Now all I have to do is to find a suitable laptop... Anyone used a Dell M1210 for EVE?

When I was contracting in Newcastle I used Vodafone's 3G service to play Eve in my hotel bedroom. I used to play about 4 hours mon-fri and came nowhere near to using evenn half the 1GB.
But the sad fact is that 3G data services do not really work (I tried both Vodafone et le merde Orange). In the end I disabled 3G and used GPRS. Fast enough to play Eve, without th..................e big gaps in service.

'Tis the new trend. Or to be more exact, its actually going out of trend again. I think the ISP logic went something like this:
ISP#1- Hey, we're a well established telecom service, we should sell internets! ISP#2- Hey, that sounds like a great idea- I'm going to set up my own internets factory! ISP#1- Hey, their stealing our bussiness! I know, lets up the "bandwidth" of our internets, then people will choose us! ISP#2- Hey, thats no fair! Lets raise our "bandwidth" even higher! ISP#1- Quick, top them! ISP#2- Bring on more "bandwidth"! ISP#1- More! ISP#2- MOAR!!!!!111 Both ISPs- Oh noes, we appear to now be selling more "bandwidth" than actually fits down our tubes. What do we do? Do we build more tubes? Wait, I know! We'll just limit how long you can use your massive bandwidth, so you can only download pretty much the total you could when you were on a 500kb line, so you run out after a week of use! Then our tubes will be ample! Customer: Feck........... -----------------------------------------------

In Argentina Telefonica tried to do EXACTLY that and fortunately, our government, in an action we didn't even comprehend, stepped in and sided with the people instead of the big companies for once, and made them turn back. I even remember when there was the massive outcry and one of Telefonica's official outspeakrs replied to something "Well, if you want a free net, then just build one".

When we got these internets, Iceland's main telecom service was owned by the government. So yeah, go figure.
Now they have little side deals though. If you buy a package with 2 gigs included, you effectively get free bandwidth since they don't charge past those 2 gigs. ----

Well I'm UK, and its a trend here. As I said though, its a reversing trend now. ISP#3 came in and said "I know, if I sell an unlimited policy, everyone will choose me over both those other eejits, and I'll be well away". Which is nice, except to make up for it they just add a "Fair Use Policy" to your contract, meaning they can severely limit your bandwidth if they think you're using too much at peak time. -----------------------------------------------

That is very interesting. Are the rates competitive? Here in California, we get monthly or yearly unlimited bytes plan.
DSL: $14.99/month for 1.5Mb/384Kb non static IP Address Cable: $29/99/month for 4Mb/384Kb non static IP Address
The only time rates like the above don't apply is when you are ordering something like T1 or ISDN. ---

that very last part, here in the US when a city tries to build its own fiber net the telco sues them to prevent the network from being built even if the telco considers the area unprofitable for broadband.

I live in South Africa. I pay about US$85 per month for a 1Mb/s wireless connection that is capped at 3Gigabytes per month. Additional bandwith costs around US$20 per gig.
Going through the cellphone network would cost about US$150 per Gig for 1.8Mb/s(theoretical max, real speeds are usually less than 400Kb/sec).
I gave up my ADSL512 connection due to extremely bad service from the mostly state-owned telco. That was around US$110 per month, also capped at 3gigs per month.
I don't think I've ever seen Eve use more than 2MB/hour.

I live in Denmark and here there are more different ways of handling it than I even care to remember.
Some companies sell both: unlimited with low cost for slow DL and UL and a high, sometimes very high, cost for the faster lines (2Mbit and up).
Others advertize a braodband ADSL line that is a 128 Kbit/s but very cheap and essentially sucking.
Some advertize a 2 mbit line for 20 Euros and then an extra fee for however many Mbytes are actually spent (when doing the maths on some of those lines it's scary to calculate max usage and then see the cost for a year, it is sometimes in excess of 200.000 Euros, but I hope they have some limit or something).
I was lucky and got a nice deal on an ADLS2 line ( 24Mbit /1Mbit) for 50 Euros a month, unlimited bandwidth.
Perhaps it's just me, but I get angry when I see and add for a "ADSL broadbandline" that is slower than an ISDN Please resize image to a maximum of 400 x 120, not exceeding 24000 bytes, ta! If you would like further details please mail [email protected] - Deckard

That's not the only dodge. To get the connection speed higher, the companies actually sell the same bandwidth as many as 50 times to different people, hoping that they don't all connect at the same time - at peak hours, you can be lucky to get a quarter of what's advertised
Still, I'm lucky enough to have some neighbours' wireless networks in range if I need a backup. I'm not alone - a friend of mine in Durham reports that one unsecured network near where he lives (in an area mainly populated by students) has over 100 people using it at times. The owners haven't even changed the default usename/password for setting up the router ------
So you're lagged out in Motsu/Saila/Aramachi, but you want that CNR? Do missions for another corp! |
