My wife works in the same office as me, we're both web developers.
And no, we're not self employed, do not own our own company, and do not work from home.

A couple of years ago I did go on my very first date when I was 32 years old. I drove four hours to L.A. to meet a girl I met online. Lets just say she had an interesting personality. I wasn't physically attracted to her however. Kissed for the first time in my life, didn't really think much of it either, wasn't all that enjoyable. Over the single weekend we double dated with her friends and went all over the valley to different places, Sushi restaurant, cafe by the ocean, etc.
Then the following Tuesday she called and broke it off, I was so relieved. Thus ended my first last and only relationship I have ever had. Didn't even have sex either, just tried some passionate kissing, which totally turned me off. No, I'm not ***, I just wasn't that into her, or women in general. I'm an antisocial loner and hermit, what can I say? To me I feel its wrong to pursue a relationship with anyone at all. So much for my strict upbringing.

Edited by: Bardi MecAuldnis on 26/01/2007 17:41:52 My girl and I watch Star Trek together, and she's actually seen more episodes of Voyager than I have. Every so often, we see who can remember more digits of Pi. She plays EVE as much as I do (and can kick my ass; damn recon pilots). She has more games than I do. She absolutely pwns me in ANY fighting game (but I am a master pilot and driver). For the first year of our relationship, most of our dates consisted of playing chess. Now they consist mostly of Smash Bros. matches, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Tales of Symphonia, etc. She HAS to have the better computer (she was upset for the 3 months that my laptop outclassed hers).
I love this girl. --- Hey hey let's go kenka suru! Taisetsuna mono protect my balls! Boku ga warui so lets fighting! LET'S FIGHTING LOVE!!! |

My girlfriend:
- Will watch any Sci Fi.
- Plays Age of Empires
- Has shown an interest in EVE
- Yet somehow has no technical knowledge whatsoever in order to qualify for geekdom.

The whole 'LOOK HOW ****EN NERDY I AM' thing is probably one of the worst things to come out of the internet in recent times.

I had a girlfriend once that was able to hook-up her computer by herself. She enjoyed long conversations about global warming and ECO friendly energy sources. She hated sports, but loved to play pool on sport-bars drinking beer. She called that "applied trigonometry". She used IRCII on VAX on a daily basis.

LOL. We could do a thread measuring geekiness by charting how old people were when they first got laid - but then some people would get left out, and the thread would probably get locked for being inappropriate.....

Let it sink in for a bit. You'll understand.
(Edit: to all: this post is in no way meant to be derogatory to girls. I adore girls. There is more to girls than a body. Well, to some girls there is...)

... reading this thread, I see 2 things. 1) there is hope I can find a girl geeky like me that I will love. 2) there is no hope we will stay together, and or that I will not become a hermit.

I've been told by the ball and chain that 'i do have technical knowledge, i use microscopes and stuff. i have technical knowledge, just not about everything'.
So I take back what I said.

My lady once compared us to Seth and Summer, from some series called The OC. Since that guy seems pretty geeky, theres a comparison :p
We also play Worms Armageddon via internet. And she's pretty tolerant on me going at 22pm at her house for the sole reason of changing skills in EVE when my PC was on repairs
Shes not much of a geek I guess, I am, but she likes me even having a heavy geek side, so Im happy with her

My girlfriend is inbetween, i guess. Won't touch Eve, insists she can't play FPS games, sticks to final fantasy on ps2... has a massive anime collection and against my will watches Stargate (i can't stand stargate/trek/whatever).
She gets bonus points for watching BSG, though.

I find it somehow satisfying when a girl Im dating is ashamed of my geeky side - kinda like its a chance to explore new horizons with her where she'll bar me from defaulting to mmos on a saturday night. I get uncomfortable if a girl touches my PC for this reason - I dont want to end up with a relationship that consists of debating unix vs. windows for 50 years.
