Having real life mates play Eve alongside you is great. You can introduce them quickly to ship setups and give them a head start on equipment, so they can start having fun and be useful to your corp from the get go. Moreover, you can trust them.
This week, one of my RL mates decided to give Eve a try. He signed up for the trial and I talked him through setting up his first character. I pointed him towards Achura (as a fervent powerplayer should ) but he was sucked in by clever Republican marketing and went Minmatar, despite my protests.
Then we started talking about all the careers you can follow in Eve. I was careful to emphasize the freedom that Eve offers.
Suddenly his face lit up and he asked excitedly, "So I can be a pirate and steal other people's stuff?"
I knew at that moment I had already lost him...

I'm always amazed how the most stable and quiet people can become nasty pirates in EVE - my buddies who play either became evil mercenaries or gank people for their loots
Viva la PvP!
Now if only WoW let me steal tier 3 raiding loots from lvl 60s ... _______________________________________________

If Blizzard, even for one hour, would implement a similar system to dying as we use here in EVE, the screams of outrage would beso loud, so wide spread that even the native tribes in the remotest part of the amazons, and the aboriginals in the furthest reaches of their wastelands would hear them. It might even lead to countries declaring war on the USA just to get at Blizzard.
Too bad Blizzard would never risk their revenue to do something most of us would think is lots and lots of fun . |

Please, must every thread render down to WoW bashing? It's like this tiny company is bashing the big corporation because it's invented some competing widget and it thinks everybody else should own one. The only problem is nobody wants to buy it.

Its not WoW bashing. Just because someone mentions "WoW" doesn't mean they're bashing it and doesn't mean you have to hop in to play fanboy and defend Blizzard from the attack that you think you see.

Isn't WoW bashing a necessity and explicitly stated in the EULA?

Yep. I wouldn't have it any other way tbh. But it would be nice if they stuck around long enough to haul some stuff for me.

I give up with you DS. Black is white, white is black. It was Wow bashing, like a lot of threads on these forums often degenerate into ("go play WoW!" - and yes the majority of MMO players do! Think about that for a second). Many Eve players have an e-peen size issue with Wow. It's like small man complex. At every opportunity you have to smack it around, even though its so unbelievably successful. Another approach of course is to see what we can take from it in terms of making Eve a better game?

So now you're insulting the size of your opponent's members, and claiming they have psychological problems.
Clearly, this is the way to convince every other person on the EVE Online forums that you are right and they are wrong.

I don't know what your problem is, but I was making a psychological observation which I see is entirely justified by your reply. I notice you avoid the actual point I was making.

There is nothing to be taken from it. That is the problem.
MMOs existed before WoW. People played those. We hated specific things, but liked the game over all, or at least had nothing else as an altenative.
WoW should be part of the MMO "genre", but isn't. People who played before WoW tend to not like it. It is not part of the club. It's subscriber base is almost completely Blizzard lovers, not MMO lovers.
A rough analogy is to find someone who has an extensive Mozart collection and to give them a Kevin Federline CD because they love music.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I mean, you try to live a good life. You even try joining a group of people whom claim to be anti pirate. And the whole time, every instinct in your body wants nothing more than to grab a cutlass, scream "Yarr!!!", and royally tear into that mining barge you just passed. Why is that? Clueless Noob |

Yeah I remember when the everquest2 tradeskill part was very fun and complex....than they simplified it to like that WoW's one is and quite frankly if I wanted to play WoW i'd play WoW. Don't get me wrong I do play WoW and I can happily say that EvE beats the stuffing out of it. --------

actually theres lots to be taken from it, just not on the pvp front. which is what eve is about. WoW is a Pve game and say what you want but the pve is much better over there. Ontop of that the feeling of adventure is, atleast to me, alot bigger in wow. which is what most people look for. Now i didnt extend my WoW account after the initial month because of the linear gameplay. Eve is a teamgame with lots of goals to achieve thru playing and thinking with other people. But Tbh i think most people like the linear gameplay.
In Eve youre the director of the movie, In WoW you play the legend someone els has written... and most people would rather play legolas than spending hours upon hours creating the story

The reason for the WoW bashing is that a lot of us liked WoW but couldn't stand the carebear endgame.
We play eve and wish in our hearts that WoW would do some things to make itself more eve like.

the feeling of adventure grows old after you realize that you have killed the same boss and the same trash 50+ times just so that you can gear another noob, (or even someones alt) just so you can go work on another dungeon that you have beat 50 times so that you can yet again gear someone else so that perhaps the next time you go to Nax you might get the chance to bid outrageous amounts of dpk against all your friends that are just 1 MC/ZG/AQ/BWL run away from throwing in the towel and taking their 234978 epics with them when they deactivate their account because they are tired of character progression through items alone...
If wow didnt have a level cap, I would still be grinding.
