Edited by: Dao 2 on 25/01/2007 02:13:32 Omg to many ppl on server shard now plz desperate dieng need of sharding! ;p
Nah I'm kidding :o ;p
As I've stated before numerous times I'm not very tech proficient (:o wooo) and what I do know, is not about networking or coding so please be patient with me.
Now I don't really actually expect this to ever happen so don't take it as a "we should do this" sorta thing its more like a "what if." :|
Right onto the thing, with the explaining <.< >.>
Is it possible to "link" to "shards" together, say like if a new space opened up in eve (like a whole new area of space the size of the current area.) and if you had to go through a "wormhole" or something to get to it (the wormhole being the link thing). Could you actually do that with 2 different shards/servers? Would it reduce lag at all since its not on the same (omg gonna use a big word here :o) server cluster or sql database/cluster (<-- is that even something? ;p) or whatever.
And would you be able to say check your assets on the shard your not on.(I guess its possible, say it can "query" the other server or something?) Is it possible to chat with people on the other "shard/server," say maintaining chat like it is now?
Now this is technical wise I can invent a whole huge backstory and **** for it real quickly and it'll be damn long so don't ask about it -_- ;p
edit: I know my grammer and sentence structure suck ;p I'm sorry >< ------------------------------------------------ NEWLY ADDED ON 1/19 (though applies to all posts before ;p)

The idea is totally pointless, because your shards are no longer real shards if they are connected. Its no different that two connected systems.

Sounds like you should be asking for instancing. Essentially the idea would be that when an instance fills with enough people it would generate another instance of the area and send new arrivals there.
However the problem with the idea is simply that it goes against the whole concept of EvE. You could simply avoid enemies by staying in a different instance and never have to worry, and it also means that an entire fleet might not be in the same instance or even the same instance as their enemy.
I suppose this wouldn't be so bad if it was happening for high sec space, but not for anything below 0.5.

I don't think he's asking for instancing, it sounds more like the way WOW works though, there are 2 continents and you have to ride a boat to transfer between them. I'm not really familiar with the way eve's server system works, but i'm pretty sure that's what we already have with different solar systems. _________________________________________________________

Well, Eve already is a system of linked shards, you get half a dozen systems per traditional server but you can move & communicate between the servers.
Ultimately, if there's a link between them that you can access in-game, it's just an extension of CCP's exsisting structure and it'll just add to the lag. ************************************************
Wohoo! No more negative sec status. It's a shame it took me TWO YEARS of Carebearing to get rid of a lousy -1.2 |

Considering the OP pretty much described the current server setup; why are you still here?
To the op: If people can travel between the two universes they would need to be in both databases, or both would need to share a database. This means lag would be no diffrent from whether theres one or two servers. The server pretty much already works the way you described it in the OP. -----

I just travelled back now from the chinese server, the exit is somewhere in the new regions. I'm sure there are more connections. I'm now investigating the warptunnel to WoW. Gonna splat me some elfs with my nanophoon.

What you describe is what we have at the moment. Each star-system is effectively a "shard", and they're are all linked together by jump gates. The server itself is split into nodes, each one of which handles one or several of these "shards". -----------------------------------------------

The think the OP is asking for something similar to what UO did with Trammel and Felucca (sp).
