hello!
i am currently on my trial, and i would looooove to purchase a full copy of the game. however, i have significant time restraints. there are periods of possibly several months or more during which i will be unable to play.
if my account is left inactive, how long will my character remain on the server before it is purged?
although i appreciate the kindhearted people who help rooks like myself, please only respond here what you know for certain. if i play for 2 months, become inactive for 6, and return to a "character no longer exists" message i will be crestfallen, and surely will not play again.
thanks for your time!

Apart from banns, no chars have as yet been deleted from the EVE database. However there is a stated 6 month limit, not enforced thou.

Out of all MMO's I have played, I don't think I have ever heard of any that have deleted characters other than when the game itself shuts down.
That's not to say it can't happen, but...

CCP guarantees your character will remain on the server for 6 months if you go inactive, however they have yet to delete a single character from their database, so you could go inactive for a year and there is a 99.9% chance your account/character will be here when you get back.

I myself went inactive for over a year to go play something else , and only came back a few months ago and had no problems reactivating my account.

SOE has at one point in time deleted all Everquest characters below level 5 or 10 that hadn't been played for the last 3 months or so. Even they didn't dare to delete any character more advanced than that.
NCSoft merged all Auto Assault servers into one, requiring the player to manually mark all characters to be transfered there. Those that didn't (and you had to activate your account to mark them) left their characters behind stranded, and no doubt deleted as those servers were dismantled.

I think the only time I've had a character deleted was when EVE went from beta to public, but thats a given. All companies post a defined limit on character life incase someone over at CCP decides to clean house one day. Removing their responsibility, even though the character is technically their property...

well alright then, thanks for the info. in the barely two days i've played, i've amassed a fully outfitted kestrel, my third ship, and have 2.5 mil towards my next upgrade. in simpler terms, i'm hooked.
thank you for the replies. i feel confident my intermittent playing will not result in a loss.
