When using a smartbomb for the first time a player receives a warning message, indicating that using a smartbomb could cause concord to attack. Presumably this is because the smartbomb also damages non-target objects. My question is, WHAT EXACTLY should not be hit with a smartbomb?

Go fire a smartbomb in empire at a gate. See what happens.

Smartbombing something = attacking it, whether intended or not, it'll get hit if it's within the blast radius.
ANYTHING that you would get CONCORDed for shoving a heavy missile (or other) at, same rules apply with smartbomb. Basically, don't smartbomb at gates, stations, next to players, etc...

Anything that doesn't belong to you or the corp, you can smartbomb your corpmates and their drones.

Don't use smartbombs in empire space, there are just too many opportunities to accidentally hit someone who will get you concorded.

Agreed. Or, to be precise, don't use them in 0.5+ and don't use them at gates/stations in lowsec. I think that even hitting a gangmates wreck (from a mission, etc) will get CONCORD on your ass. If not, then that only applied after the gangmate docked.

I should take the opportunity to point out that hitting a Corp Mate can get you nailed.
When helping out a fellow Corp Member on a mission, I followed him through the Warp Gate, and dropped out right in the middle of one of his Smart Bomb explosions.
While I only took a tiny amount of shield damage, the next thing we knew, CONCORD appeared and blew my friend to radar chaff.

Can anyone confirm if you get killed by concord if you hit a beacon in a mission with a smartbomb. I use SB's in empire often but i've never known if hitting a beacon gets you killed or not. -----------------------------------

Are there any problems using one in a mission? I'm working up a load-out for my howitzer armed Thrasher where I've got a smart-bomb fitted for dealing with close-in orbiting Serps. William McC racken

Also if you have a T2 fitted hyperion with 3 rigs, never ever ever move the smartbomb to a new hotkey on the UI, while in Empire.

Smartbombs, aren't.
Damage anything, anything at all that's not a 'valid target' in empire (e.g. because of war, being a 'shootable' or whatever) and Concord will be giving you a brand new shiny salvage resource.

Very odd, because I've hit corp mates using smart bombs before while doing lvl 4's and didn't have anything happen. Where you also grouped at the time, or ungrouped flying together?

You probably hit a structure or something then.
There is no way concord will come in for shooting a corpmate, not even with a smartbomb.

Smartbombing the following will get you Concored In Empire - Players not in your Corp who are in your gang - Stargates - Stations - Cans not belonging to you or your corp - Anyone who is not in your corp - Abandoned Ships not claimed by you (inculding Ibis, shuttles, ect.)
Smartbombing the Following is Okay in Empire - Corp Mates - Anything in a Deadspace mission, inculding beacons, acceleration gates, and NPC structures that would give you the warning message if you wanted to shoot them. - Asteroids in a Belt - The Systems Star
I have first hand knowledge of Smartbomb dos and don'ts

that's very helpful, and answers my original question.
there seems to be some disagreement on whether smartbombing corpmates is ok or not?
