Quote:1. A vessel made of a refractory substance such as graphite or porcelain, used for melting and calcining materials at high temperatures. Nope.
Quote:2. A severe test, as of patience or belief; a trial. Quite possibly.
Quote:3. A place, time, or situation characterized by the confluence of powerful intellectual, social, economic, or political forces: Eve?
Which definition prompted CCP's ultimate naming?

End the end, it boiled down to either cruicible or 'hey look, engine trails!!!'
I personally believe they chose incorrectly. In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has angered numerous people for many different reasons and is widely considered as a 'bad move'. |

Think we have to look at things out of order a little. We'll start at
#2 The test of patience was :18 Months: and the summer between Incarna and now. it led to
#3 The Emergency CSM Summit. Which led to CCP going "OH **** GUYS!! WE'RE ******* UP!" and them coming up with
#1 This vessel (i.e. the patch) from where EVE as we know it will be alloyed with some kickass new stuffs (i.e. a not **** WiS implementation, DUST, other things) to make the game even more breathtaking than before.
so... all three!

I still think that Crucible is a **** name for an expansion, and I still say that the expansion's name should have been Redemption.
Redemption is WILDLY appropriate after the absolute crap known as Incarna if you know what I mean. Bitches don't know 'bout my Avatar. |

That would have been a bit presumptious on CCP's part, don't you think? They can call the next one Redemption of their subscriber numbers go back up though.
Quote:A severe test, as of patience or belief; a trial. This seems to fit, as a test of this "new direction" CCP are taking and how the playerbase reacts. Or could refer to the grand experiment with the POCOs. |

When refining silver and gold, the raw material goes into a "crucible" where it is melted down and the impurities are expunged and what is pure remains. To "pass through the crucible" is an analogy for an individual to prove their worth. In the OP "patience" or "belief" were examples of personality characteristics that might result from a purification. If the word "crucible" were to describe a military outfit, characteristics like "determination" and "courage" would be better examples.
And in the case of game developers I suppose the characteristic we might be trying to refine are "faithfulness to your subscribers."
What is not clear is if the Crucible expansion really changed anything with the higher ups besides a panicky attempt to stop the bleeding. Since some CCP decision makers seem to have taken this expansion as an opportunity to further buff their own RMT alliances, I somewhat doubt it.
We won't know until we see the summer plans whether or not Crucible was successful as a purification process, or whether the entire CCP hierarchy is "dross" (refining waste.) |

Tl:DR The word "Crucible" is frequently used as an analogy. Defining it in a dictionary is insufficient to convey the full meaning. |
