at the moment 500,000 SP = approx 1/3 of a plex, call it 400m
if the AUR cost of the extractor is anything over a very low base, there will be very little active market as people who wish to make ISK from SP will sell characters instead without the AUR cost of extracting skills
if CCP want to create a market for skill injectors, no-one is going to waste 1000's of of AUR on extractors and put the SP-filled extractors on the market if they can just sell their char without going through all of that hassle

I think you're mistaken here - they've already stated this is an alternative rather than a replacement with certain drawbacks and benefits. For example, if you want a high SP character you're not going to be using up 100's of injectors at 150k SP a pop...
People will put a price on their SP. You won't be able to buy injectors for the ISK value of the AUR used to purchase them. And so if the AUR cost is high, these things will cost over 1bn, which puts them out of the reach of their intended market of younger players... |

If they cost more than c500 AUR they're going to become a niche item very quickly
people will just use the character bazaar (both those seeking ISK and those seeking skills) if the economics of skill injection are not in balance with the market value of the skillpoints
even excellent characters in the bazaar don't generally cost more than around 250m ISK per 500k skillpoints |

Would you spend 1.5bn-2bn ISK for 500k (or more likely much less) skillpoints?
The reason I ask is that if the price is 1 plex, that's what an extractor is going to cost, and for many many players that is the choice facing them. People would have to be very rich, and very attached to their characters, to not simply buy a different character in the character bazaar for far, far less than the cost of injecting skill points.
Imagine the choice:
You want to train for Carrier with good skills - and have 30m SP. It will take 10m extra skillpoints to get there.
Option A: Buy injectors. For 1 plex per extractor, that's going to cost you 25 injectors, or approx 40-50bn ISK!!!
Option B: Buy a carrier pilot with 40m SP for 20bn ISK
I just can't imagine that CCP would be that dumb...but then again...they did introduce the $80 monocle...so who knows. But it would be a crazy move.... |

yup i imagine that's one of the reasons we haven't heard the price yet, and there's that sweet spot they're trying to work out which is 'affordable' to make it a mass-market tool
it's better for them to sell lots of something at an affordable AUR price, than very few of something at a silly price |

The other main factor is the price attached to the skillpoints. Pilots won't extract the SP and sell it in an extractor for no extra cost.
You can sell skillpoints already through selling whole characters in the bazaar. Generally you can get 250m ISK per 500k of skillpoints. The cost of a skill injector will be the AUR/ISK conversion + the value of the SP.
Anyway, CCP have shown time and time again that they are incapable of pricing 'microtransactions' sensibly. They miss the sweet spot of mass-market affordability and value, and then wonder why the New Eden Store is barely used. Their greed blinds them to a sensible business model of attractive, affordable items with broad mass appeal. Instead they go for low volume, high margin, and lose huge amounts of potential revenue as a result.
I mean, 1 plex to re-do your characters face? Ok...that'll be why hardly anyone bothers. If they'd price it more sensibly (say, 500 AUR) they'd get a lot more revenue from it. |

the skillpoints themselves carry an ISK value (about 250m per 500k SP as per character bazaar)... for example:
imagine you have 30m SP and you want 4 million extra skillpoint to fly the shiny thing
Option 1: 2 x plex game time, regular training = 2.3bn at current prices
Option 2: buy 10 injectors for immediate gain
the SP alone are worth 2bn ISK through a character sale, so... even if the extractors were cheap (like, 10 per plex), it would still be more expensive than regular training... if they cost something crazy like 2 per plex, it would cost you around 10bn ISK verses 2bn ISK...
i'm not sure many people would do that, and i'm not sure how many people could afford to? you can buy whole characters with 30m SP for just a little more... |
