im starting to wonder if i should be afraid of playing EVE becasue of RL attacks. i have read several examples of where people have been victims of real life attacks thanks to their commitment of the game. one guy who got his email bombed, or another example: CLICK Omega Corp got their TS server DoS'ed.
this makes me really worried, do i have to be afraid to play a game becasue the risk of RL attacks?!, if sombody has the abillity to find out my email or my TS ip the stepp is not far away that the same person might also find out my home address. many of us have recived threats or hate mails, (myself have managed to not get any yet *fingers crossed*)lucky CCP got the abillity to bann thoose persons that threaten whit RL attacks , but what if they later on finds out what my e-mail or my webpage adress is? a simple "whois" search is all that takes to trace my home address from my webpage (i have now taken my in-game webpage down becasue i dont want to risk this)
i am feeling very sad at this moment that things like this happen, i dont know what else to say

maybe your right, i might be over reacting. but my main point is still that things like this shouldnt have to happen at all. people this is a game and we are here to have fun, RL threats and harrasmanent dosnt belong here.

yeah. but its a problem with people's mental health not the game or anything else. its like that thing with 2 fathers fighting to death at their kid's hockey game. u just kinda go...wtf? ...nothing u can do about it, it happens everywhere - on the road, at a store, everywhere. its not abnormal, its just the fact that people are very used to the anonymous feeling they get using internet, and in reality its not anonymous at all. (spellcheck plz).

Well regardless of how "anonymous" you may think the internet is, the reality is that once people get on the internet the first thing they try and do is put up their own website with pictures of themselves telling the world what they do on their blog. I have a website, at winterblink.com. I also have a blog. What you'll find on the site is stuff about what I like, but you won't find intimate details of my life, work, whatever. That's my business. People who put that stuff online for the world to see are just asking for it.
Now I think the original poster is overreacting a bit. Yes it's a scary thing when people get out of hand with their gaming, but it's not like you're playing with a bunch of mental cases here. The vast majority of online gamers are completely normal people, kids and adults alike, just like you. Most of the freakazoids you see in MMOGs are only really like that in-game anyway. Friends of mine are perfectly fine in person, but some of them become utter weirdos in-game. ___winterblink/warp_drive_active/eve_nature_vraie// |

I know of one CA member who lives only 7 miles away from me but I doubt he'd resort to beating me up RL.
A girly corp. mate lives about 10 miles away and I would hope she'd come me beat me

I'm not so sure about the "you're not playing with a bunch of mental cases" statement. Consider a former member of ours who left nearly a year ago. He never seemed to have a problem with anything until one day he just changed and went off. He has become involved in a new situation against our corp and myself. You can tell in his posts that he harbors enormous hatred towards me. Now for someone of considerable age to have those kind of intense emotions against a person for over a year over a simple game seems to me is mentally unstable and has no real grip on reality.
I can't think of anyone that has irritated me so badly in a game that I hold a grudge past current envolvments with them. It is after all just a game. Hell, I don't hold grudges against people for RL wrongdoings realizing human shortcomings and mistakes of youth, etc etc.
Anyway, I do think that what we're seeing with these "whacko incidents" are people that are on the edge of sanity and whether it is a game, a movie or whatever, it's just the wrong thing at the wrong time for that particular person.
Of course I do wonder why now? Why the increasing frequency of such incidents in recent times? Is it the increasing stress of modern life? Probably that coupled with other factors.

I want to in no way belittle your concern but you can't think like that. If you go through life worrying about that you'd never have any friends. All you can do is make sure you never give personal information out to someone you don't trust.
I also thinks it's a sorry state of affairs when someone decides to resort to criminal activity over a game and with regards to the Omega incident, I hope they bring the full force of the law down on who ever it was because they obviously need a harsh dose of reality.

With the number of scriptkiddies around the world, worms, viruses and most importantly unupdated/no security using Windows users you SHOULD be afraid of real life attacks.
Only not coming from eve-online players but just from general people or worms who eiterh broadcast and try to find a weak computer or script kiddies who happen to find your ip. Might not even be personal.
The way i protect myself is by using a hardware router that forwards only 1 port (ssh) to a secure macintosh computer (updated as soon as a vulnerability is found). If i ever need to remote access my windows/linux computer i use the mac to access it. Since most of the worms/scripts attack a windows computer directly and not hardware routers (who probably have vulnerabilities too) i'll be safe from anything but a directed hacking attempt. And if they really want to get in they'll get in anyway, no matter how much security you have:/

EVE is positively paradise when compared to a game I used to play called PLANETARION.
There DOS attacks and hacking were almost a fact of daily life - and yes everyone complained about it - but it still went on.
I can remember that almost every time a major alliance war broke out the next day people would be on the forums complaining that their private IRC servers had been DOSed.
The game itself was put down for a few days as a result of the same thing.
As a result there was a completely paranoid atmosphere in the game and everyone was treated with excessive suspicion until they had spent a long time in the game.

GTA, Kill Bill, Eminem - 3 different products from 3 different medias. what do they all have in common? violence.
GTA- a great game which i have still not grown tired of. i mean, hacking an old granny to pieces with a chainsaw is what gaming is all about!! thats ok for someone mentally stable as myself (ish..) but what about people who are leaning towards unsettled? how can running around a city with m16s, flamethrowers and railguns be any different to shooting up a mall in the US to a less-than-mentally-sound teenager?
the violence that we see all around us (especially in America... but if guns are legal, sh!it will happen...) is self perpetuated through the games, films and music we play/watch/listen to. for the majority of people, these have little adverse affects on our personality, since we have been brought up and educated that such things are wrong in the real world. but its those who havn't had such a rounded education, or are one turret short of a sand castle in the brains department, who can see these things and think "cool! its ok for me to act like that! wheres my ak-47?"
but your right, it is awful that people would take EVE (which isn't a particulary violent game) to such extremes and aim to gain retribution in real life.

What hardin said and;
Behaviour like this needs to end. Incely. It's lame beyond words to resort to OOG attacks, just to try to get the upper hand. Even out of spite or maliciousness is just plain stupid.
That said, there are ways to protect yourself (lo router). Firewalls, regular virus checks w/ updated software, no P2P programmes installed and a connection that's as secure as you can possibly make it should help.
For TS, IRC and webbi's, it helps to have an experienced webmaster and server admin in your corporation (Lo Darkevil of Xanadu).
If it still happens, sue the bastards into their grave..

[Insane Man's Rant Start] I'd say increasing stress of modern life coupled with other factors plus you have to think about what a person has gone through ( ie: some ppl were bullied in school and have never been O.k Since ) it all takes it's tole* <-- bad spelling soz me idiot and nutcase --> *tole on someppl *( myself being one of them )* over 3 years ago I spent everyday chattong on yahoo, msn, ICQ, IRC and a few other chat programs and website Now i dont use ANY.
.it was a 4 years since H.school ended for meand well i do have some problems. in the 3 years i spoke online in those chat programs the last year was the part i got self destructed saying i was *Bad Man* and i hurt ppl in RL saying this that and everything telling ppl i hated them getting them to hate me and saying to come kill me if they want to ( i gave my address out noone came )oh well but Speaking from my View )
A Nutcase that has not left hes house to go to work shopping or any Family Event in the last 3 years )thats 2 marriges 2 funerals and many B'day's plus Xmas New Year's ... In This World People no longer care about anyone but themselfs and about money and there status in the World....
Its pointless and Meaning less how much I own / earn in my life time in 50-100 years ill be dead and will have Nothing to show for my time here the only thing any human being's will have is Kids ( A Genetic Mix of there DNA ) its all our Entire Race Lives for to pass on its DNA to the next. That and the fact every human being is fu**ing like bunny rabbits all the time Coz they enujoy it..
As ive Choosen not to continue doing Normal day things that everyone else does ive shut the world out i shave about 2-4 times a week shower 2-3 timse a week ive not had my hair cut in over 4 months ( its a mess ) esp in the morning

Araviel, please forgive me if I made it sound like you were over reacting. That was not my intention. You raise legitimate concerns but all I'm saying is don't stop playing EVE because of them. Just be wary of whom you give any personal information to.
I know many people in this game, I run a corp with 28 members and have friends in other corps. Only 3 people know my real name and rl e-mail because they are the only people I would trust with such information.
