I just took up on some PVP. So I'm out there buzzing around in my inty in low sec, when I see a guy in Kessie. I decide to go blow him up. After going through his wreck I warp myself to a planet to make a safe at which I can go sit on the naughty chair for 15 mins. Upon landing there happens to be an NPC station right at this planet, which pretty much instapops me 
That's all fun and good, but ehm, does this happen often, and what's the general approach here?

Use the forum search on the word "safespot".
You should make them before you blow stuff up.

Planet ?
I think you warped to moon by mistake. Personally , I use the right click menu to avoid such occurences.

I warped to planet I in Crielere with the right click option. It was an NPC station that shot me there 
I know moons can have a POS hanging at it, problem is I thought warping to a planet was safe. Guess not.

NPC stations Can be around moons or planets, the system your talking about has 2 NPC stations a gallente and a caldari one right next to eachother at the planet 
in 0.0 Outposts can only be deployed at a planet and therefore are always at a planet, but conquerable stations afaik are found at moons
best advice is like someone above said make the SS before you go getting yourself flagged, but in the event you forgot to do that the sun is a safe place to warp in at RANGE (warp to 40-100km) drop a bookmark while in warp to sun, its not the worlds greatest SS but should do just watch the scanner for scan probes (un check use overview settings)

Can I just say, we at Xizor have re-named safespots as notsosafespot since Revelations due to probes. Few days after Rev, 3 of us were sitting, chatting, drinking when a fleet fell out the sky into our laps. Needless to say my drink ended up over my keyboard / monitor, and the pod ride was frustratingly unexpected.. Lesson learned!
Dont sit in a 'nsss' for 15 mins, create many and keep moving. Or use cloak if you have it.

dont sit for more than a couple minutes, and when your sitting make sure to mash the scanner button constantly looking for scan probes.
