Well here I am an enthusiastic small time industrialist looking to make my mark in Eve through invention. So I open up the blueprints section of the market and look at the invention tabs to see what I need to get started. Okay, so I need a data interface, where can I get one of those? I look at market details and nothing, look at contracts and find one starting at 800 mil ISK. Yea right!
Seeing that this invention thing is not as straight forward as it is *****ed up to be I go to the forums to find out whatÆs going on. Well gee it turns out you canÆt just buy a data interface because there arenÆt any. You have to train hacking and covert ops, bring some buds and go searching for a data interface bpc in hidden complexes, taking a month or two of searching. Then you have to go to Cosmos plexes and farm them for weeks (or months) to get the parts to cook the bpc and make the interface.
Does this strike anyone but me as a really bizarre way for an inventor to act?
Inventors sit in their labs and go over information and interactions. ItÆs a combination of ingenuity and trial and error with a little luck added for spice. HereÆs how invention should work:
-You should be able to buy raw data interfaces that cannot produce anything. -Take the raw data interface and combine it with items you want to invent and cook it in a lab slot. The better the items and the longer the cooking the better the data interface. -With the data interface and the data cores you get from agents you should then be able to run invention with the chance of getting a cool bpc. The better the data interface the better your chances of getting a good bpc. Worse case you should at least get a named bpc for your efforts.
Of course they would have to increase the number of lab slots since itÆs already ridiculously long a wait to do research.
WhatÆs missing in this whole process is a sense of uniqueness. Imagine instead of inventing a Tech II item exactly like everyone elses you invent ôBoss BrutorÆs Vagabondö with maybe one additional low slot and minus a high or something like that. ThatÆs what I imagine true invention to be.
Guess IÆm not getting into invention after all. Oh well, one small pod in the vast expanse of Eve can still dream.

Funding the Data interface takes a few days at most, the components shouldnt take much longer with todays patch. After that you can sit at a lab all you want. Invention is not something that was designed to be another 100% afk career, it at least requires some effort.
Ps: ME Slots != Invention slots. Plenty of those around.

Planned for t3, invention is simply a way to give players the ability to keep the t2 market within reasonable bounds. -----

Thank you for your optimistic reply. I have to say itÆs quite a bit different from the experiences of others who have posted in the forums.
Needless to say I will find out because I enlisted the help of a buddy who has covert ops and hacking. HeÆs going to see if it only takes a week as you say.
That still does not address the basic issue that in order to be an inventing industrialist you must first train for over a month in skills that donÆt relate to industry. Then go perform, at least for a few weeks as you imply, activities unrelated to industry in order to invent. People who specialize in pvp should not have to spend a month or two training mining skills so they can fight (making money is a different issue). Why should that be true for industry?
