Impliment an ability to lower the volume of individual players, as some come across as loud to one person, and quiet to another (individual volume settings).
Also a general volume control for voice (to turn up/down everyone) would be nice.
Fading in/out in-game sounds whilst people are talking would be nice too. ---

2)Right click on the channel tab, and select "Join Audio".
3)Tick "Use middle mouse button to talk." http://www.ravenwarriors.com/audiosettings.jpg
4)Select an input/output device. http://www.ravenwarriors.com/audiosettings2.jpg
5)Select an input line. http://www.ravenwarriors.com/audiosettings3.jpg
6)You're all set.
As a note, if you cannot use your middle mouse button, you can go to the "Shortcuts" tab in the options screen, and set an option for "Talk". You can set both this, and the middle mouse button at the same time, so don't be afraid.
If you can, use a headset, as speakers & mic cause feedback. ---

Post found via EVE-Search.
If you do a search on EVE-Search with the parameters author:bustybounty and vivox you'll find a number of posts by BustyBounty reporting that Vivox seems to be fundamentally incompatible with Windows 2000 because it relies on DLL functions that are only present in Windows XP.
According to this post they did bugreport it at the time, but it never attracted developer comment.

Voice;
I set up my options in the 'audio' tab, however I was unable to select the microphone boost option. My sound card settings were correct and I selected to use my middle mouse button as the 'push to talk' (you should allow people to chose their own). Everything in the setup looked fine.
Once inside the voice channels, I tried to right-click the channel tab and 'join voice', however nothing happened. I tried talking on my mic, but got no responce. It's as though I didn't join anything. I tried all the voice channels just in case there was a user limit. I tried in the gang channel as well. - nothing. I didn't hear anyone talking nor did I get any typed responce saying people were able to hear me.
I did see little green and white chat-type icons next to the people in the perspective channels.
-------------- My hardware;
Win XP Pro 64bit (Completely updated) 2gig RAM AMD 64 3700+ (2.21 GHz) SB Audigy Audio (e880) - old sound card, however works extremely nice. Voip (vent/TS/and other voip services work fine.) - drivers are completely updated
-------------
Hope this helps. I'm glad I could help out.
Cheers -T

fleet move went very good. I got lag spikes for every ship coming out of cloak after a jump but other than that it was very smooth.
I had no trouble hearing people talking, the sound is very nice apart from some metallic sound now and again. I couldnt talk since I cant access the audio setting, it shuts down the client when pressing the tab. Ive filed a bug report so I hope it will be solved. ----------------------------------------- For the liberation and safety of the Matari people! |

Overall I'm pretty impressed with Vivox. Sounds really good and is very clear. On top of that you don't have to have ingame audio enabled to hear others... just join the channels you want to be in.
Didn't have any problems with Vivox on my end throughout the test, although agreed it can be difficult to see who is talking in the channel when there's a lot of people listed in it.

Vivox sounded great, really nice work... was very clear. Ran smoothly straight away.
As mentioned further up, the voice icons kinda overlap names. And with buddy, standing and voice icons all in that spot it gets really growded. But thats UI related and not Vivox performance. Would be an option to move buddy and standing over the portaits corners.
Cheers.

(Last thing I heard, they are trying to sort out a new mirror. So thats great, my alt doesn't even have login on Sisi atm. :D)
One other thing I didn't mention in my earlier post. some ppl had theyr mic volume a bit low. Of course you can ask em to adjust it. But maybe its an idea to use a option on each client to auto-adjust their own volume automaticly. Yeah I know double-auto sounds strange, but its accurate. If ppl speak, the system automaticly would activate the adjust sequence coz you wouldn't want the system to boost silent-noise :D That way everyone would 'transmit' at the same strength, allowing each client to adjust voice/music/soundfx volumes to represent their desired values and still get a overal same voice for everyone.
Cheers

An option to select voice input and output device independently of each other would be much appreciated.
Finally, an option to (also independently) select output device for game sound would be good, too.

Thanks Elaron.
It's been bug reported confirmed 3 times, it has its own thread or three, it's been mentioned in couple other threads and very recently in original Vivox testing sticky post/post.
I'm sorry but I've run out of elaboration methods. What happened to "every bug report is read" and "post here with your feedback"?
Yes, I know. Not many W2k users left and out of those not all are interested in in-game comms. Just, getting "Elaborate please" after all the elaboration already done feels like ...

After reading the motd on sisi, voice worked fine & i liked the quality pretty much.
People who had voice enabled had a white balloon in the chat window.
The balloon turned from white to green if someone talked.
This all worked after enabling voice in the options window and right clicking a channel to join audio.
Once audio is joined on a channel you can leave it the same way (right clicking & leave audio).
Middle mouse button was used for talking but you were able to redefine the key shortcut in the options window.
The booster check box in voice options couldn't be checked was the only thing which didn't worked for me.

I'm using a Speedlink Medusa 5.1 USB headset and as mentioned before, the eve client doesn't save the microphone volume setting. Let me give you some more details. After turning every soundsetting for the mic recording to max on my PC and putting the eve mic volume to max too. I checked if everything stayed at max volume. Now as soon as i rightclick the channel tab and click "join audio" the eve client turns down the mic volume. After looking at it for a while i noticed that my windows recording volume for the mic is turned down too. This way i will never be able to use voice decently, because all volume related things for the mic volume get turned down. When i leave audio, i am able to set everything back to max level, but while in audio the windows mic recording setting is frozen. This shows there is a direct link between the volume you set in the client and the volume in windows settings. And last but not least the mic boost option isn't working or enabled yet. I will try another setup when i have time later on. |

Ok, i took part in the stress test on SiSi and the sound quality was good. But:
Some suggestions:
- The GUI is the wrong way around in my opinion (just like the gang invitation system, but thats another matter). I would like the option to turn a whole channel into Voice Mode, where everybody in it gets voice enabled automagically. Or at least get a message box asking them to turn on voice when the channel creator turns the channel into Voice Mode.
- Mute function. Is it really a good idea to have Mute affect both text and voice? What if you mute a guy because his microphone is causing disturbances, but you still want to be able to communicate with him? In my humble opinion, there should be both a Mute Text and Mute Voice option for the leader.
- The GUI has bugs when it comes to showing who is talking. Some people did not turn "green" when talking. After turning off the member list for the channel, and then on again, I think it worked after that. But im not 100% certain. That needs more testing. Some people also were constantly green even when not talking. Also I think it would be great if the list could scroll to show the player who is talking at the top of the list, while also highlighting or flashing the background color to really show who it is.
- A lot of people didnt even get the Join Audio option. Im not sure if this is because they didnt have Audio enabled, or their volume was low, or their mic not enabled, or whatever... but since most players arent computer experts, I think this procedure should either be made more intelligent in trying to solve the problem for the player, or at least give him some advice on what to check. Otherwise we'll get tons of people just giving up on Eve Voice quickly.
- There should be a limited voice trial account on TQ for entire corps. Lets say a corp can enable voice for 24 hours free of cost - for all their members. This will give them time to try out the system before buying. I think a lot of people will stick to TS/vent if there is no trial, since its already there and working OK.
- When right clicking a player in a channel, there is a option called Invite To, and then it lists the channel name the player is already in (like Voice1). No need to list a channel he is already in, is there? It only confuses people.
- Would it be possible to add the menu option to go to Audio Options in the same menu as the Join Audio is in? It makes sense to me that it should be there, to adjust microphone volume etc.

Where do I start ? Well, how about the good parts first ?
* whoever had the "microphone input volume" right could be heard very clearly (at least by my standards)... so, sound quality, very good * even if the client was lagged to hell and back (under 1 FPS, huge spawn at PIII), the voice chat kept going as if nothing was wrong... again, very good
What, good stuff over already ? Yes, but so far, we can conclude that the voice part of the system itself is more than adequate. ___
There were however a list of things that ranged from minor annoyances to major problems, most (or even all) of them having to do with how exactly the voice system got integrated into the game (not sure on the "all" part, might have had some local machine issues too, can't be 100% sure). Well, nobody expected everything to be perfect from the start, and we were there to test, criticize and suggest changes, right ? Right. Now, on with it !
1. Not able to adjust "input volume" for the microphone.
First off, while not yet having "joined audio", in the ESC menu under audio you could adjust your microphone volume, and even see visual feedback. All nice and fun, I have adjusted to an average 50% visual feedback when speaking normally. That volume adjustment there was mirrored by the "mic rec" volume in the windows sound volume control pannel. Everything seemed fine. The "microphone boost" checkbox however, that didn't work (not enabled by default, not able to enable it). Thought it didn't matter anyway, still had the slider, right ?
The problems started after joining audio chat and attempting to speak. Apparently my voice was much louder than anybody else's. When trying to bring it down a notch, I noticed the volume slider was NOT where I left it (but at 33%), the "feedback" bar gone too. Well, no problem, drag it to about 10%, try to speak again. Still way too loud, everybody else says. I go back to the ESC menu, lo and behold the slider is back to 33%. Luckily, I was able to disable "microphone boost" in the win sound control panel (yeah it was enabled even if EVE said it wasn't and refused to toggle it), so I was still a bit louder than average, but at least not annoying.
Bottom line, I am stuck on two volumes, "normal" and "too loud", with nothing in between. Several others said they had the same problem.
2. Inability to control voice chat overall volume (and not only that)
I have to admit, I've been playing EVE with sound disabled for a long time. Why, you ask ? Because the volume control sliders are next to useless, to be honest. The first three sliders (music, UI, voice) do indeed control (at least to some degree) what you expect, but the "main" volume slider is not for the overall volume level, but for "everything else not directly controlled by the first three sliders", and that includes pretty much EVERYTHING that is relevant (and loud even at low volumes) in EVE: warp sounds, turrets firing, missiles impacting, the works. Suffice to say I had to set each and every volume slider UNDER 2.0 to be able to understand most of the people in voice chat, and had to go even further down in order to not strain too much trying to understand the ones with lower microphone volumes.
In other words, as a quick measure, we need a "voice chat" slider, with whatever volume we were just having in this test as a "50%" baseline... so the ability to change it (amplify, mostly). Also, a rework of overall averages (50% baselines) for the separate sliders... music is not loud enough even at high values, weapon sound effects are way too loud even at low volumes, can't separate weapons fire from "engine" sound or other environmental effects, and so on.

3. The "overview" bug and unwanted "open mike" effects
The same type of bug plaguing the overview seems to be affecting the "who is talking" indicator. Meaning, we had people who were obviously NOT talking still showing as talking, we had people who even left the audio still showing as either talking or still joined in audio, and so on and so forth. Closing and opening the "portraits" side seemed to correct the issue (at least partially, everybody resetted to "not joined, not talking" unless they did say something afterwards).
The biggest problem here however was that we DID have some people here and there that were obviously AFK but still broadcasting (dishes being zanged, arguments in the background in strange languages, even a baby crying for a while), and we had no clue WHO it was, so at least the user could be booted from the room.
4. Very hard to follow who's talking
While the current "channel" system layout might be ok for chat (because you see the name and even picture) of people that type something, for voice chat... well, it becomes confusing, at best. There is just not enough "space" to look at everybody and at a glance determine just WHO is talking.
The idea would be to either have some channels "voice only", so ALL of the screen could be filled by tiled portraits (no names, just portraits, standings/membership and the "talking status")... or to be able to "detach" the member list portrait/name part and configure it however you like.
5. No feedback about your own voice's status
To be honest, I surprised myself talking without pressing the mouse button, or releasing it in the middle of the phrase, or worse, only pushing it in the middle of the phrase.
We need some kind of (visual) feedback that we ARE broadcasting.
___
Final remarks
While the possibilities are only limited by our imagination at this moment and for the near future, with things like 3D positional voices "in-grid" or even "in-system", and with "voice customization" possible (so that you actually sound like your avatar should sound like, not like you actually do, or at least have positional 3D voice-chat with 4 "envelopes", one for in-grid, one for in-system, a third for in-XX-LY-range and the last one for further away), we must contend with the short-term fact that this won't be happening any time soon after the voice-chat is introduced.
Therefore, we must also (at least for the time being) give "voice channel moderators" the option to mute the channel temporarily while they speak, and also the option (for each member) to mute (just for them) any other individual member in the channel... or even better, personal distinct volume controls for each other member in the channel (Vivox already mixes each "feedback" loop individually to filter "yourself" out, so technically it should be possible).
Well, that's about it for the main issues with voice chat and today's test _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

Just tested now with a corp mate when the server is quieter we have discovered that I never get the option to "leave audio" it always sits on "join".
I suspect that this is lag related. I am on a dial up connection.
