Research Agents
R&D agents in EVE are ôaidesö through which research into Tech 2 Blueprint Originals is conducted. There are a few key differences between ônormalö (mission) agents and research agents:
Standings Requirement: Research agents have both the normal standings requirement for an agent of their Level and Quality, as well as the requirement for Corporate or Personal standings at 2.0 less than the normal standings requirement.
In practice, however, this additional restriction rarely comes into play, since attaining the required Corporate standing automatically fulfills the lower requirement, and Personal standing can not be modified (except with skills). The secondary limitation, therefore, exists only to prevent those with high Faction standing from accessing top-level researchers without actually working for that corporation.
Skills Requirement: Research agents have requirements for skills, as well. Each agentÆs info will list off the areas in which they can perform research. Higher-level agents will typically have more areas to choose from, though you can not perform research in multiple fields on a single research agent.
In order to begin research, you must have the skill that corresponds to the research area trained to Level I. These skills will have a prerequisite of Science V and either Mechanic, Electronics, or Engineering V.
Quantity Limitation: Unlike normal agents, you are limited in the number of research agents you can access at a single time. The starting number is 1 agent, and can be raised by training the skill Research Project Management, which allows an additional agent. Thus, the maximum number of research agents able to be contacted simultaneously is 6.
Special Missions: The missions given out by research agents differ significantly from those given out by normal agents. More on this later.
Doing the Dirty Deed: Once youÆve found a research agent (both EVE-Agents (from Chribba) and EVE Explorer (from Grismar) support searching by research skill, among other things), and have met the standings and skill requirements, itÆs time to begin your research. Talking to the agent will provide the option to select the field of research and start your research. After this is done, you sit back and wait. YouÆll earn a number of Research Points (RPs) per day.
The number of RPs you earn is based on this formula: ((Agent Skill + Your Skill)^2 * (1 + Effective Quality / 100)) * Area Bonus
Agent Skill: Determined by the Level of the agent. Level 3 agents will have Level III of the appropriate research skill. Your Skill: Determined by your training in the research skill. Effective Quality: is your effective quality (after Negotiation, Connection, etc.) with the Agent. Area Bonus: Depends on the research field. Most fields have no modifier (e.g. 1), weapon-area research is doubled (2), and ship research is tripled (3).

Edited by: Jai Centarium on 31/01/2007 21:26:00 These RPs Seem Valuable... Give Me More! It is possible, however, to get more than your base RPs per day. There are three main methods to do this:
Research Missions: Research missions will be given out by the research agent. There is typically a 20-hour delay between research missions, so youÆre guaranteed at least one per day from the agent. Your agent will typically inform you of a mission being availability via an EVEMail.
Research missions are typically either Trade (the most popular seems to be brining 8100 units of Tritanium) or Courier (small packages, under 10m^3). There is NO penalty to ignoring the mission (contrary to the tone of the EVEMail, research will proceed normally), failing the mission, or declining the mission. You will not hurt your Corporate or Personal standings. You will not lose and RPs.
What you will gain by completing the mission, however, is an amount of RPs equal to your normal daily total.
Note: ItÆs been known to happen that the agent may not EVEMail you for a mission after your first contact or after failing a research, or after youÆve failed a research mission. Should this happen, youÆll need to talk to the agent in person until you receive a mission; EVEMail notifications will subsequently resume.
Negotiation: The Negotiation skill directly improves the effective quality of your agent, and is the most efficient skill for raising the number of RPs you earn each day. Negotiation IV, for example, raises Effective Quality by nearly 20 points.
Connections: Not terribly efficient (but very useful in grinding standing to be able to use agents), Connections can minimally raise the effective quality of your research agent.
Okay, IÆve Got a Ton of RPs... Now What? There are two uses for Research Points:
Datacores: You can directly spend your research points for the datacores for the skill youÆve been researching. Once youÆre conducting research, and have enough RPs, you can choose to buy datacores by talking to your Agent. Datacores are a part of the Invention process.
Tech 2 Blueprint Originals: The other use for RPs is the ôT2 Lotto.ö When CCP releases a new ôbatchö of T2 BPOs, every ôactiveö research point in the lottery is a ôticketö into the lottery. The more tickets you have, the better chance you have to win a T2 BPO...
... keeping the following caveats in mind:
- There are many, many tickets in the lottery. Even with several hundred thousand RPs, your chances are very slim.
- Your tickets might not even have a chance to win. If CCP is choosing to release a T2 Blaster BPO, and your research points are in Gallente Starship Engineering, youÆre not eligible to win.
There is some debate as to how the winner is chosen. Argue among yourselves.
This Research Sucks... I Quit... But Can I Still Win? Unfortunately, no. If you choose to quit research with your agent, ALL of your RPs are foreited and you donÆt get any of them back. Because of this, itÆs worthwhile to choose a high-level (L3 or L4), high-quality agent to perform long research. And if itÆs absolutely required to quit with an agent, buy as many datacores as you can before quitting.
The end.

The "theoretical max" (since the highest R&D agent in the game right now is L4Q18) per day is somewhere around 117 or 118 (before the field modifier). But that's with maxed skills in the field, Connections, and Negotiations.
A more practical number is somewhere around 75-90 before the field modifier, depending on how dedicated your character is to research. If you're using an alt, and don't have else to train, you can push it higher.
Also, I forgot to mention in the guide proper: Fractional RPs DO accrue, but can't be spent or used as tickets.
Datacores cost 500 RP each, modified in the same manner as earned RPs by the field of research. Thus, a Gallente Starship Engineering datacore will cost you 1500 RPs, but since you earn RPs at triple the rate, you'll be able to buy the datacores at the same pace if you'd been researching Mechanical Engineering.
Datacore prices fluxuate based on the availability of research agents, and the popularity of invention. They're still pretty rare en masse on the market. If you're planning to use R&D to provide datacores for invention, you'd be advised to check the datacore requirements and focus on corps that have those research fields available so that you can get a steady stream of materials. Mechanical Engineering, for example, is available with mostly Matari corporations.

I keep seeing hints in posts that the lottery system is over, been replaced by invention, etc.
Are these unfounded rumors?
And are new t2 BPo's announced in the patch notes? Are the like happening periodically all the time(outside of patches)? When was the last time a "batch" of BPO's was lotteried, if that info is even possible to know?

The lotto is not dead; I know of a few people that have won T2 BPOs in the past week. It is still the only way to get a Tech 2 Blueprint Original. While Invention CAN get you some decent results, it will always result in a Blueprint Copy, which has limited runs.
No, distributed T2 blueprints aren't published anywhere. You'll just have to keep an eye out, and see who is excited that they finally won that Pirhana Rage Rocket BPO they've been wanting for years.

Good post. We've needed a research guide for a while.
Only one minor quibble on the supply missions for R&D agents. It does adjust by level. The level 3 versions ask for 2700 Trit, the lvl 4 ones ask for 8100 Trit. I have not done lvl 2 or below in years, so no idea what they ask for.

Firstly nice guide,
Secondly, just to see what BPO's are available from an agent you can look up his info and those are the ones in the pool. If it says "nothing easily predictable" then he has nothing to offer.
And yes, they are still giving out, I won the lottery myself recentl \o/

It's worth noting that each additional level in the skill that you're using for research (for example, rocket science) increases the daily RP count in that research area. So it's worth training your research skill to higher levels.

Keep in mind the odds are pretty low no matter when you get in. An alt isn't the worst idea in the world to perform research, since there is nothing to do once the research begins but wait, as the missions are purely optional. If you're interested and willing to put forth the training time (two level V prerequisites, plus the Rank 5 training on the R&D skill itself), there's no reason to not grind up the standing to a Level 2 or Level 3 agent just to get your foot in the door.
Then again, it DOES mean a better chance for me if you don't get in. [;)]
The research missions have no effect on ANY standings. They do, however, generate storyline missions which do affect appropriate corporate and faction standings.

Correct. Each agent can only head up one project for each character. So in order to have multiple projects running you need (in addition to the Research Project Management skill) to find multiple agents who will work for you.
This is also where the debate about how the lotto is actually picked starts to come into play. If the corporation is picked first, it might be worth spreading your agents across multiple corporations (that's a lot of mission grind if you want Level 4's!). If the field is picked first, you want to spread your research across as many research fields as possible (that's a lot of skill grind!). Etc., etc., etc.
(In the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn't matter how it's picked! )

Good work, TY. I did know what you posted (read and used the old posts on my main) but I had totally forgot to train negotiation on my research alt. I am really curious to see the difference, added to his 6.96 standing and 5 agents (it is faster to train a 2 alt than train the skill for the 6 agent ).

Tbh that's what i'd planned to do, he's got the research skill on the board, only level 1 though, and i'll only be doing the odd research mission, as he's very useful for other things too.
I read somewhere that it's to do with the agent, as in bpos are handed out to certain agents. If people are always going for the higher level ones, then there's more competition for the bpos, so going for a lower level agent might yield better results, despite getting fewer RPs?

Does training up the relevant science skill (eg High Energy Physics) improve RP gain? If I have a level 3 agent and train it up to level 4, will I see a gain in RP? Does this mean level 5 science skills are pointless? __________ If you think the game is rigged, why are you still playing? |

I'm actually getting back into the Research side of things, and am looking to update this with a bit more information. Invention has really changed the RP game drastically... you can hold out for that BPO... or potentially make lots of cash with invented BPCs instead. Makes it more interesting, if you ask me.
Originally by: Ling Xiao Does training up the relevant science skill (eg High Energy Physics) improve RP gain? If I have a level 3 agent and train it up to level 4, will I see a gain in RP? Does this mean level 5 science skills are pointless?
Yes, the relevant science skill DOES affect your RP gain; it's not capped by the agent's level at all. But since the agent's level is ALSO factored into the calculation, it means that having a Level 3 agent with a Level 4 skill will give less RP/day than a Level 4 agent with Level 4 skill.
As for Level 5 science skills: They're not explicity pointless, but I can think of a LOT better way to spend the training time. Instead of burning (ballpark) 21 days training to Level 5, you could train 5-6 OTHER science skills to Level 4 in that time.
If you don't have Research Project Management, I suppose the variety of Science skills won't matter. If you aren't ever going to take a swing at invention, it probably won't matter. Even so, there are probably better ways to spend 3 weeks of training.

Youa missed one of the biggest ways to get more RP points.
In what ever research field you work for... the higher you research that particual field the more RP points you will get per day. At level 1 in Caldari Starship Engineering I was getting 75 per day. With level 4 I get over 200 RP per level IV agents. And the other aspect is the higher the level agent you use the more RP's you receive.

The official reply is NO. The R&D lotto is dead. There are some small chances of a future implementation of a BP market with RP ponts (similar to the LP store) or further improvements in invention where you can get a T2 BPO, but for now they are on the discussion stage, not even on the drawingboard.
Originally by: Maxdamage is it better to use a lvl 3 qual 16 or a lvl 4 -17 RD Agent?
The RP formula is (your skill+agent skil)^2*(1+agent true quality/100)
Usually the agent skill level is equivalent to his level.
So doing some calculation you will see that the level 4 agent isn't always the more convenient.
It depend on your skill level and on your standing. If you have less than level 3 in the skill the level 4 is more convenient, if you have 4 or more the level 3 is more convenient.
At skill level 3 it is a fine balance dependant on your standing, the level 4 is more convenient if you have a good standing.

It means he has a missionr eady for you. If you do the mission you get RP equivalent to 1 day of research. But even if you don't do the mission you still get the normal RP.
If you don't do the mission you will not get another mail till you speak with the agent.
You can check your total RP in your mission agenda, ther is a tab for all your Research agents with accumulated RP and RP per day for each of them.

After you have trained the needed skills and started the R&D agents you have no further "costs" unless you want to do the missions for extra RP.
Even then it is a fairly small cost, as the missions are: bring me tritanium and move this 0,5 m3 package.

You start out by finding the corp that has the R&D agents you are interested in and start with the other types of agents in the corp, such as security or personnel etc and run lvl 1 missions until you can run lvl 2 missions until you can run lvl 3 missions until finally you can run lvl 4 missions for that corp.
Then you should have made lots of isk to buy the skill books and start your research career.

Skills Requirement: Research agents have requirements for skills, as well. Each agent’s info will list off the areas in which they can perform research.
So for Mechanical Engineering datacores you'd need ... drumroll... Mechanical Engineering!

I tried to access a R&D Agent, that needs a standing of 6.65, when I dock at the station, this agent is shown as avaiable (my standing to him is shown as 6.7) and I can talk to him. I ask if he could perform some research for me, but he says that this would be a waste of time and I should get better standing. What is wrong? Isn't my standing high enough or am I missing something?

You have at least 1 science skill matching one of his?
You have the possibility to add another R&D agent? (1 agent is the base + 1 for every level in Research Project management)

I was told that standing and negotiation skill dont improve your RP / day, so I saught to test it out. I raised my research character's standing by 3.5 points, putting her right at 9.9, and I trained her negotiation skill to 4 instead of 2. This yielded no difference, explanation? post a link to the nerf lol.

When I got Mech Eng to 5 it didn't show a change in RPs/day until the next downtime. I guess it takes more than a day to do what you did though so you would have noticed. I'll try that on an alt.

The RP/day gain from negotiation will be updated when you talk to the agent (if I'm not mistaken, it's the same way when you advance a level on your specific engineering skill, but then you can speak to the agent remotely). I have agents in the same field with the same level and quality in different corporations with very different standings (more than 1 point) but they give me exactly the same RP/day, so it's not clear to me how (or if) standing affects RP/day.

It is not standing, it is the agent true quality. Normally that value is modified by the standing with the agent, but the R&D missions don't give standing, so you will not get a standing increase (your standing with a corporation don't influence the true quality of an agent, only your personal standing with him).
A curious point is that a 0 quality agent give a 1,01 multiplyer, not a 1,00 as it should. I have noticed that with a quality 0 agent I have. From previsious check I recall that the other agent followed perfectly the formula for RP production, so it is an oddity.
RP production formula = [(agent skill+player skill)squared]*(1+agent true quality/100)
Negotiation increase the RP you get from doing the R&D missions but not the base value you get every day.

That is not my experience. Last week I explicitly tested this on Tranquility, raising Negotiation from III to IV. Then I pulled up my three level three agents with the Journal. Each showed the original rp/day value. As soon as I started a conversation with each the rp/day value immediately went up (this were remote conversations).
Negotiation is a must if you want to make your own datacores. I doubt I'll raise it to V since I'm still maxing my research skills and and will be for many months to come.

Is there anywhere that it has been officially writen that the RP lotto is dead? I would just like to have some confirmation on this. Seems to be a pointed lack of officially released information about this stuff from CCP.

I also cant access RnD agent? He is show as available to me, my standing is high enough, he is lvl 2 and my science skill is lvl 4. I have all necessary requirements and still nothing? How is it possible, is he overbooked? Its the one in Hek in Bounless Creation station.

If you've just finished raising standings to be able to access the guy, sometimes he won't talk to you during the same session that you raised the standings in.
Try quitting out and restarting the game and then talking to him. If that doesn't work, try again after downtime.

For all the R&D agents you need Science 5 and at least 1 level in one science skill (for that agent they should be either Mechanical Engineering and probably Minmatar Starship Engineering).
You must have 1 level in one of the specific science skill that the agent has to work whit him, science 5 is a prerequisite for all those skills.

I have Science, Engineering and Electronics lvl 5 and Mehanical Engineering lvl 4. I am already researching and inventing, but I will see today afther downtime is there any change.

Ok, I am dumb. When I was applying to the RnD agent I only tried to contact him by first option that is given when you ask him for conversation ("Do you have job for me?")and I didnt see that I have to click that second option first to activate him as my RnD agent. So sorry for bothering you guys.

Hi all,
Is it still worthwhile doing R&D agents?
I am interested in production and invention but seeing as the T2 BPO lottery seems to be no longer viable I was curious if people would still recommend this.
Best wishes,

Sorry but that is a monumentally stupid question.
If you read the guide (but of course you didn't you just hoped for free t2 bpos) then you understand that R&D agents are basically free datacores. Getting the RP requires no effort from you, it trickles in by itself. RP = datacores. What do you think? Come one and take a wild guess if it's "worthwile"

No, it isnt. The real question is, whats the return on the investment of time earning the standings as well as running around to pick up the datacores.
Assuming you can earn 20m isk per hour running lvl 4s and it takes 10 hours to earn the standings for a level 4 R&D agent, you wouldnt "pay off" your investment in time until you'd earned at least 200m isk in datacores, you also have to consider the opportunity cost of the isk you would have upfront not earning equity.
Unfortunately its not a question that can really be answered for you easily, so the short answer is generally if you dont play a lot or have lots of inactive periods, or it isnt a hassle for you to afk around in empire once every month or so it can be a nice source of small passive income.

thetwilitehour = Many thanks for the sincerly helpfull reply to my question!
I was aware that since the patch the T2 BPO is out of the question - using the limited search option this was the closest thread I could find without creating my own.
It may sound like a daft question to you guys but to a new player the world of eve is confusing.
Heck I even have my own avatar yet!
Thanks again thetwilitehour - Fly safe!

If you decide you want to be able to manufacture specific things how do you determin what skills/Agents you need to concentrate on.
Say for instance I want to make my own tech 2 drone.

Electronic engineering and Mechanical engineering for drones.
In general you can look the T1 BPO/BPC under invention, there are listed the skills and datacores needed.
BTW: the only drones worth inventing are the sentinel and the Hammeread II (maybe the heavy, but last time I checked it was not really worth it). For the rest the market price is lower thatn the invention builder costs .

I was thnking of getting one of my characters to 5 lvl 4/5 research agents just for isk. I was looking at duvolle labs. Can I make alot of isk from this? And say I pick high energy physics with one research agent, travel to the other can I pick the same research but with a different agent?
I also noticed with Amarr one corp has 4 of the highest lvl 4 R and D agents where duvolle i would have to settle with 2-3 high and 2 low quality lvl 4.
Which would you advise to be better or the best corp to get standing with for R and D and why?
Thankyou this guide has been very helpfull. I seem to lose these pots and topics on this forum easily so can you send the answer in an eve mail to me please? Thankyou much appreciated.

I might be repeating what others have said but thanks alot for this guide it really explains a lot. I've got a mainly combat toon but am training up research at a basic lvl so they i can see that aspect of the game. What I want to know is if I just use one R & D agent ( as i dont plan to train research project development skill) are my chances of getting any t2 bpos pretty much impossible?

In short: No chance whatsoever.
Longer version: If I recall correct, the T2-BPO - lottery finished some time last year, so I'ld say your chances of getting a BPO that way are indeed pretty much none-existent . Check the playerguide, missions, R&D-missions here . R&D agents give out RP (research points), which you can use to 'buy' datacores for invention (either inventing yourself or selling 'em for someone else to use for invention).
