Actually, I have to confess to not having seen them, I can only imagine the horrors it contained. I do seems to recall old screenshots with basically the same UI as today, just slightly different skin on it.

I just read that thread and you actually got a couple of pretty good suggestions there.
I made a similar one a while back http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=464900
My suggestion for UI improvements involve a quickbar just like you have in WoW, DAOC etc.
I can only agree about the modal dialog boxes. The most hilarious one is the one where you are to enter your petition information. Its a classic example where you have to manually type your information outside EvE, then open the petition window and enter it. If you forget something you will have to start over or submit an incomplete petition. I was baffled by this window being modal when I tried to get agent information from ingame for a petition in my early days.

Its rediculous, make it so that you have to press a key before you chat, and make sure that key is customizable. This would free up your entire keyboard for keybindings. To ensure that everyone is happy, make it optional.
Sorry if this comes off as to much of a rant, but I honestly think the UI in this game is in dire need of alot of attention.

I sooo am in favour of this change. And the UI as a whole is in need of a revamp. I suggested the key-bind change over a year ago, and I'm sure others have before me -- I don't know why CCP insists on keeping it the way it is.
If there is anything that WoW beats Eve Online in, it's the fully customizeable UI, something that Eve needs more than World of Warcraft does with how complicated this game is. We're thousands and thousands of years into the future. Interfaces should adapt to us on an individual level, not the other way around. Jeff Han says we should already being doing this.
Lets just hope that we get some kind of improvement on that UI, I watched that clip from Ted talks and its awesome, if it was available we would probably have bought a unit or two to test it out at work.

I'll stick to the improved DX9 version, thanks. I don't need Vista telling me what I can and can't watch on my PC. -- Not the opinions of my corp or my alliance. |

Perforce? We use that too these days because Alienbrain dosn't work cross-site. My sympathies. Oh, if you're a coder it's nifty. But personally I'm having to use a mix of P4Web and P4Win to get anything done, and it's so slow at times...

Originally by: Hanimuri Nobunaga I have always wondered, what was the reasoning behind coding in Python? Not to question your choice of code but I never found Python to be that great of a language, especially in larger applications. It was great for learning and the occasional "hello world" program though.
I found it especially annoying when they would randomly decide "you know this command, yeah.. it now does stuff differently that it use to so you need to go rewrite old programs."
Actually, Python does well even for large application. Its minimalistic syntax, dynamic typing, powerful built-in types, etc. make development much easier and faster compared to some other languages.
From my experience, it takes 2-3x more lines in C/C++/Java than it would take in Python. Don't know how about other languages.
second that but add that python was meant to be an easy language to build network apps in. Besides, that's just the server. I would hope that the client is c or c++. But, it's been many beer bongs since I touched python or c/c++. So Flame on.

I haven't looked at Clearcase. Perforce is working quite nicely for us though (except that I hate the evil P4V interface). I didn't choose P4, but I remember a lot of different options being evaluated when the change from the last system was made. I'm sure we picked something to suit our needs.
For the love of sweet baby jebus - avoid ClearCase as if your very life depended on it.
Perforce 4tw tbh. If you ever look to move onto anything else, however, look at subversion. ____________________________________________

Nice to some details of how the code magic happens at CCP. From what I can gather, you guys sponsor Stackless Python and the lead maintainer effectively works for CCP? Either way, kudos to the developers.. I'm confident with Python but the whole concept of going stackless is still bending my brain slightly, but I'm going to press on until I understand it (ie. the errors stop) :)

We don't use any Trac for Defects. I'm sure Mephysto will cover this at some point though.
I work on a simulation tool that's actually much like a game but not as fun :P and we used to use perforce for CM, recently we ended up making an ill fated move to starteam (never ever ever ever use starteam it has serious CM flaws [loses history]) and we're hoping to backpedal back into perforce but we really need a good work flow tool. If I may ask what tools do you use to track defects and assign tasks to people?

I built a defect tracking system, oooh, 3 years ago now. It's worked fairly well for us since then, but we're now considering our options for switching to a new system for the future. I recommend looking at the list of Perforce compatible 3rd party defect tracking solutions, in which Jira features, as well as DevTrack.

Thanks for the reply, I was curious about the defect tracker since that was what spawned our move away from perforce. Our goal was to utilize a very slick work-flow, whereby I can submit a defect, the higher up code guys get to essentially vote on what work gets done on it and have the defect delivered to a developer. Once he's got it he works it, resolves it and forwards it to QA which after testing they close it. Starteam promised all these things and at best poorly delivered on any of them. I was intrigued to hear y'all used perforce, I've personally come to love it, p4v while mucking with the interface did add some awesome features (revision graph ftw). I just hope and pray we can move back to it ;)
