Let me explain one thing. It's not an art to configure a battleship for NPC hunting. Any battleship config can do well against NPCs, which are totally outmatched against any battleship or large weapons.
We have to stop this "cruiser" think. Cruisers are more limited, and so we are forced to make choices to optimize the cruiser for one purpose.
A battleship does not have to be. Other than mining, the only other reasonable configuration a battleship should be is always with PvP. Any battleship configured for PvP can more than handle NPCs, so long you leave two to four hi slots for turret weapons.
I got a scorp now, and out of the six hi slots, I intend to fit four launchers. The other two will have tachyons. The two tachyons are enough to deal with NPCs. I used to just hunt NPCs by killing mainly from two heavy beams off an Arbitrator. The launchers are fitted with cruise missiles and torpedoes to deal with any other battleship.
Bear in mind, I may not even use the tachs for killing NPCs. The heavy drones I can fit on the Scorp's drone bay can also handle NPCs.
Unless you really suck hunting NPCs, the biggest threat to your battleship will be another player in a battleship. To protect your investment (other than with insurance), you have to prepare to fight other battleships in the best way your battleship design can possibly can.
And I am not talking about PC pirates jumping on you on spawn sites. A lot of PvP happening in spawns have nothing to do with pc pirates, but people simply getting annoyed with each other, started arguments who uses the spawn, and that heats up to a shooting battle. A lot of people hunting in spawns are polite, but there are rude ones. Likewise, you may be chaining when someone comes in and shoots at the npcs, to disrupt the chain. You get ticked off, then you start shooting each other. Or the case is the other way around, you ticked off somebody by interrupting his chain. Other people think they can push you away from the spawn site by force, etc,. The fact remains you better be prepared to deal with fighting stemming from personal animosities rather than pirate role playing, and in any case, regardless of what reason or vision you have for your battleship, you always have to be prepared to fight another battleship.
