Not sure if I'm posting this on the right forum but oh well....I was wondering if it would be worth to train for Orca on my main account and my other 2 accounts to train for procurers. I m planning to stay in high sec for now and just play industry until I get fully trained to try combat sites, I have bough recent BOPS and Indy seems to be fun in the meantime. Would any miners out there would suggest this? or what would be your opinion. |

Meet people. Make friends. Have fun killing everyone. See if you can steal something big. Or, if you're feeling really crazy, see if you can kite out 50 supercaps to the wrong side of a cluster so someone else can kick in the door.
Mining is something you can do while you come up with evil plans.

The orca won't pay off for you as an individual; you just don't have enough accounts to be able to sacrifice one for boosts and make more isk than you would from just running a procurer on each account. |

It can double as a poor man's freighter or Bowhead if you don't want to shell out more than a billion for transporting BC and below, mission loot, and charges and refit kits. Doesn't really help if your run in anything bigger than 400K cubic while rigged and unpacked, though. I use to use it to haul my old Tengu and Gila around when moving from region to region, then would lug all the loot back to a trade system in between ops. It was a nice mobile corp hanger for me when I wanted to venture beyond my corp office and needed something to carry everything -- ships, ammo, mods, loot, shuttles, etc.
For mining, there's probably not much point to it unless your group needs a good link platform; that would be the Orca's primary mission. You can spec into a DST, which has a corp hanger that caps out at 62,500 for capacity plus a smaller main bay once fully trained up, and they are significantly cheaper than an Orca, not to mention partly gives you some skill-wise foundation to tackle (no pun intended) freighters later should you eventually have need of one.

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

An Orca is great for being able to move freight and fitted ships around using the MWD warp trick.
Using it as a mining booster is very nice for a semi-AFK operation. The problem with miner boosting is that it takes a LOT of leadership skill training to perfect.

With maxed skills and a mindlink, the Orca will increase the output of two Hulks by 50% each. Since you get a cycle time bonus from the links roids will pop earlier, what will help a bit with clearing out belts. Since the Orca can haul the ore to station, you get a real benefit from keeping the other two mining ships in the belt. Using Procurers in that configuration is missing the point.
Getting the leadership skills is about two months. Getting the Orca maxed out is another 2 month. Any mission running alt with 4 month of skills will outperform two miners.
That being said. Industrialist buy minerals and build things to get rich. Miners are working for minimum wage. Folk who work for minimum wage don't get rich. They don't got the time to do so.

Do not listen to them. If that will be fun for you - go for it. Its your game. For many players Orca is the way to socialise, make friends, relaxed game time. Orca pilots are backbone of any mining OP in high sec. And if you will ever decide to go to wormhole... well, sometimes orca can be the most effecive way to move your stuff there.
I just hope you know, that you can not log on all your alts, that are sharing your account, in the same time. Of cause if you use different accounts for your alts - you can multibox them.

In terms of a more relaxing game, yes it is worth it. The orca can hold alot of ore before docking so you can have the two barges unload to the orca and just dock and unload it once every 35 minutes or so. Sure beats having to dock 3 ships nonstop. It is how my husband prefers to play after a long workday, mine with 2 macks and an orca and listen to music and zone out. I don't know how long it took to pay for itself in isk, but it pays for itself right away in terms of playability. |

My set up normally consisted of 1x Orca 3x exhumers, once Orca was full I would start dropping cans. Then at a suitable moment I would dock an exhumer, swap for a shuttle and go fetch my Charon.
I kept complete Ice fits on board the Orca so could repurpose my miners on the fly, the only difference with Ice being I would not bother with the Hvy Lifter unless I was supporting a group effort.
The Pro Synergy Pilot is not just a fighting man, he is a salvage expert.-áIf it is lost, in the blackness of space, he will find it. If it has been destroyed, he will loot and salvage it. ive seen alot of other people make this statement above about dont bother mineing
with out miners, you would be screwed... how are you all gonna get the ships and modules with out miners and industrialists??
anyway... mining is an important part of the game... dont listen to those that tell you otherwise... no you wont get crazy rich, yes at times it can be boreing as hell (ive often told my friends that its a netflix operation in EVE)
yes, its something to do, and in the past in EVE, i found it to be an extremely social environment (not so much nowadays it seems), miners got together, mined together, someone would provide orca boosts, ect... was how i met many friends
as far as set up, this is how i do it when casual mineing acct 1 = orca acct 2 = skiff acct 3 = skiff -stored inside the orca ship hanger is a DST (i use a Bustard)
when orca close to full, then acct 2 swaps skiff for DST, does 3 runs to unload the orca, then back to mining, because the orca is such a slow pig of a ship, i found i can do the 3 runs in slightly faster time with the DST, and then get back to mining, the whole time the orca still there and acct 3 still mining, you dont need to get all crazy about the mathamatics of the most volumn of ore over period of time. the numbers and spreadsheets will make you start bleeding from your eyes and ears. Just mine, the most effective way for YOU and your play style and your set up.
for me, when not mining, those accts perform other functions, for mission running acct 1 = marauder (or other ships possible) acct 2 = noctis (or command ship) acct 3 = marauder (or other ships possible)
and can do PI, and exploration ect you have lots of options, just play the way that is most fun for you |

I mine for both ISK and raw materials for building industry. I'm routinely working on a couple of things at once.
I use a Procurer with Drones for mining in HiSec and it works okay, but I get waaaaay outmined by Tech II barges and ORCA's which strip the fields bare. That level of mining is not for me. ORCA's are a high priorty target for other players so keep that in mind.
I'm thinking of going to a Retriever for HiSec, I don't have the courage for a Covetor. So, until I have the need, I just use my Procurer and my Miasmos and do jet can mining. It works for one player, one account. It's faster with my corp mate, but I can do it alone just fine. |

We would get the mins the same way then we did in 2004. Make a big pile of loot and refine it. We would need twice the loot then in 2004 and anything but mega and zyd would become pretty much worthless, but it would very well be possible.

That is all very true. However, there can be too much of a good thing, and that's pretty much where mining is at.
Here's the deal with this: Unlike Ratting, Missions et cetera, where the amount of ISK you get is mostly fixed, the amount of ISK you get by mining depends on how many miners there are. And there are many, which is why the profit you can make for the most part (especially in high sec) is so low, that people who really aren't into mining just for minings sake tend to not even bother with it. Most people also don't bother looting their mission sites or anomalies for the same reasons. Miners come a dime a dozen, and so do minerals.
If there were fewer miners, there would be less minerals on the market and prices were higher - it would be a different story then, but as it stands, currently - unless circling a rock while pushing a button every couple of minutes is really your thing, don't bother. If it is your thing, though - all the power to you. I won't judge. |

You are attempting to reach the north pole by heading east.
Mining skills do not transfer to combat skills, and are completely wasted if you intend to do anything combat related. You're probably better off training combat skills right now, and spending some time learning sites and mechanics. You don't need to be 'fully trained' to start combat, quite the opposite. Within a week or two you'll be earning more, and having more fun, than you'll ever have mining. |

I just say that it totally kills the new player experience since it is the most boring minigame in all of gaming and new players should be encouraged to experience a wider range of game play which is actually fun before they take up mining and quit out of boredom.
I mean you even said it yourself, it is so boring you watch netflix instead of paying attention and actually playing the game. If even people who claim to like mining say it is boring as hell and you can only stand it by watching netflix while doing it, how can anyone in their right mind suggest this to be a good thing for a new player. Do you want them to quit?
After all it's not like you really need a lot of ISK if you start. Learn the game by using frigates which are cheap as hell and a lot of the mentioned new player friendly corps even provide free ships, so you don't have to worry about ISK at all.
This constant reinforcement of the carebear believe that you have to somehow mine for two years in Highsec before you are ready to actually do something is seriously toxic for the game.
@OP You have nothing to lose. Join one of the mentioned corps and try it for a week or two. You can always go back. I promise you you will have the most fun you ever had in this game and you will love it!

As it was said, plenty of friendly boosts available already. Most 0.5 systems with plenty of belts have a group you can leech into.
But as you said, you will mine only temporarily, as such, don't invest too many skills on it, nor dedicate characters to it. Even if you follow industry gameplay on some of your characters, the reality is that you really can't sensibly mine enough minerals to keep lines running, except deep sov null afk with rorqual boosts and a fleet of 20 miners...
Anyway, don't stick to HS too long. The future is out there in 0.0

TBH with 3 accounts, you'd probably harvest as much ore with 3 procurors instead of 2 plus the Orca. Your Orca will also be a gank target, and your procurors won't unless you go out of your away to antagonize gankers. An Orca does make a good, cheaper alternative to a freighter for transporting, although once I trained into a DST, I rarely use my Orca. A DST is almost gank proof in high sec (again, unless you go out of your way to make yourself a target) and can carry a lot of ore.
Training up your mining skills does zero to prep you for combat sites, with the exception of drones and some tank skills if you fly shield tanked ships (if you even bothered to train those skills for your miners). If you're going to actually play instead of watching Netflix and are primarily interested in PvE, you might as well skip mining, buy a MTU and jump into Security missions now. Procurors have small ore bays that fill up fast, and you'll lose a lot potential materials if you go AFK a lot, anyway. You'll get loyalty points to buy stuff you can use or sell, and make more ISK between bounties and mission rewards (especially with multiple ships steamrolling the sites). You also can either reprocess the loot drops for minerals, or sell them and buy the minerals. |

You guys talk as if mining is all or nothing, or PvP is all or nothing. I currently, mine, do industry, research AND go running combat sites, I don't really do ship to ship PvP as it's not something I need to do to have fun yet. That's going to wait until I've got more experience under my belt.
You can be a dedicated PvP person though and still whip out the mining ship or industrial for something you or your corp need. You can even PvP in some mining ships, so it's all relative.
Ship to ship PvP is not the only thing to do in EVE that's fun. |
