Due to incredibly high load and unprecedented demand, Project Discovery has been taken offline temporarily whilst we work with Massively Multiplayer Online Science to stabilize the service.

MMOS are currently in the process of reinforcing their server infrastructure in the light of the EVE Community's enthusiasm to contribute to Project Discovery, and once this process is complete, we'll bring the service back online for everyone to enjoy.

We are hopeful that this will be resolved within the next 48 hours, at which point we'll be able to bring the project back online.

Apologies for any inconvenience downtime on the service might cause!

Are you sure its player enthusiasm to contribute to Project Discovery, or their enthusiasm to screw it up with poor identifications while earning ISK?

The most surprising thing about this situation is that you all could underestimate how big of nerds Eve players are. That's a bummer though. I was looking forward to this during work today...

Probably a little from column 'A' and a little from column 'B.'

And it's not screwing it up... it's a matter of helping them identify design flaws. Cool

Well, that is going to just give an initial quick buzz. When they only earn only a pittance for guessing, they will wander off and gank something not too challenging, because they are just not suited to anything that needs intelligence and effort.

The rest of the playerbase, will improve, get better rewards, and provide good data.

So yes, there will be initial overload, but the load will settle down, when the people flocking to the new shiny, who have nothing to offer the scientists, get bored.

So, for many this is a nice feature, the opportunity to do something useful, and the initial wave of people, would be hard to estimate other than it would overload things initially.

So everything is normal with the world. A little patience is fully justified.

The problem is in the mean time we are getting penalised in accuracy for disagreeing with people taking the easy option and not reading descriptions properly.

I also get penalized for agreeing with the community.

There's no way to advance.

It is odd because I get near 100% of all test images correct.

"All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection."

Could be interesting to entertain the possibility of using hierchical approach. Say, any given picture goes through the first cycle - "as is", and with only two choices - "the tested protein is in the nucleus" / "..outside the nucleus". With the option to choose both.
In the second cycle the picture is separated in two - in the first one the nuclei and all inside them are removed, and the user has only choices regarding the cytoplasm and the externalities; and in the second one only nuclei are left, and user chooses the how the tested protein is distributed inside them.
This might negotiate "the most obvious choice" approach to a certain degree.

Still experiencing terrible lag.

I get some of the way though the tutorial if, I am lucky, and then the next image just doesn't load. I waited over an hour for it to load with no success.

I have tried to get through the tutorial at least 6 times now but each time ne of the images does not load. After closing the window, the tutorial is restarted.

Yup. Exact same process here.. stalls on step 1-9 of the tutorial, while loading the next step's image, at which point I just have to close the window and restart the tutorial from step 1. It doesn't matter how long I let the step try to load.

It's only contributing to science if the community as a whole is finding the right answers. Sadly they seem to be doing everything possible to give the most wrong answers possible, which undermines the entire purpose of the thing.

It isn't the community's problem. The system in its current form encourages to give not the right answers, but the answers which the majority would choose. In other words - user does not try to guess the right answer, but the opinion of the majority about what answer would be right. The former requires knowledge of some biology basics, the latter - mass psychology basics.

It's like in multiple choice tests, if you always pick C. you'll get a C every time.

I have a question about the credits. Do you receive them each time you advance a rank? There's been at least two occasions where I've gone up a level but didn't receive any. Currently on rank 30, with about 16,500 AK - is this average or below/above?

I'm just starting on this. I guess it could use a bit more of a tutorial, but I've been able to pick up on it quickly. I can see how folks could get turned away from participating, however.

But regardless of that, CCP, please don't shut down support for it too quickly. I like the purpose and I can see something like this needing more patience and tweaking than what one might be accustomed to giving a small part of the game.

How exactly does the Community Consensus work? It all added to 135%, am I wrong in thinking that was a display bug?

I had a good laugh over the sample image being identical to the example of Endoplasmic recticulum yet still only 62%

Each number is an independent figure showing what percentage of people rated that image as having that property. Since an image can have more than one property it's not going to sum to 100% normally.

As long as you're trying to learn the nuances, then you're doing your best. Keep in mind that the consensus is not always correct.

I've seen low consensus for easy-to-miss features in an image, such as a bridge, that are definitely present but off to the side.

I've also seen low consensus for marking an image negative where the image's staining closely matches the samples provided. Instead it'll be a 75%+ consensus on cytoplasm for sparse, super-faint green dots.

Essentially punishing people for being good at analysing samples. Bad idea.
