OP, this is about 3 years old, so some stuff referred to may have changed some. It's a list of wormhole terms, though, so might be useful for you genereraly:

You said you don't want one, but get an astero when you get some more isk. Incredibly fast warp out time, it give you the ability to run DED3 or lower combat sites, and it gives you the option of fighting other ships such as cov-ops ships.
The advantage of the cov-ops is that it can easily fit combat proves. A helios with 1 drone could defeat one of the other cov-ops.

Think i'm gonna stick to low sec for the time being. Then use wormholes to get me deep into null sec I play my EvE almost exactly the same as you. And I found out that doing explo in low/null sec is not really worth it. Traffic in WH-space is much MUCH lower (at least in European timezone) and it's more relaxed. Also, you don't need to look at your local every 3 seconds :) Just the d-scan. I average 100mil per trip that takes me around 2 hours of playing. Some WH's are plentiful. Some are spammed by gas sites thus worthless to an explo frigate, then you just scan down next WH as quickly as possible. And you don't need to worry about gatecamps since there are no gates.
If you'd like to fly together sometime feel free to drop me in-eve mail and I will happily share my WH survival knowledge :) Bookmarks and GTFO tab on your overview really help if someone tries to jump/bump you when you hack cans.
Although in all honesty, in WH I got jumped on only once and managed to get away. The time I lost my Astero I decided to take exit to null and do some sightseeing. Given that I landed at far south reaches of the map. Managed to get through a single gate only before I got killed :< |

Think WH space is where I need to go. Been in Nullsec the last few days and have done terrible.
Though 1st time I tried a wormhole I failed a hack and got blown up by the thing I was hacking =/

Lesson well and truly learned. Never EVER let your guard down in nullsec.
And thus the excitement of exploration.
I too prefer wormhole exploration. Very exciting, and in my mind, more realistic since you do not know who is out there. Scan, combat scan, scan again, etc.
I also like that I've ended up going into wormholes and not popping my head into LS or HS for weeks as I tool around from hole to hole. If I find a particularly quiet one, I may hang out for a while.

I've been in null for like 2 years now and my overall avarage income is about 1bil in 5-7 days just from relic/ghost sites so it all depends where and when you explore (I explore max 1-2h per day). I use wh's to get in/out of null and I dont remeber last time I got blown up in null or wh ;) Biggest bonuss for exploration in null over wh's in my opinion - I can have 1 jump clone in null and 1 in hs, so when I got 1 bil of loot I scan down wh whith low/hs exit, drop the loot in nearest station, jump back to null while wh's are active, jump clone to hs and pick up the loot <- hope this make sense ;)
Have fun and fly safe o7 |

Falcon, just because I think I've read between the lines that it worries people - and its way cheaper than a Tengu :P
I should be using the Heron but I really don't like how it looks, so I'm still rocking the Merlin :D I need to upgrade though, so I guess any cruiser or T2 Frigate |
