For the people saying they want to shoot one another in stations: CCP has stated many times that this will not be implemented,(obviously), for the reason that Eve is not a first-person-shooter. They don't want to distract people from the real game, ie: outside.
On the other hand, I find it very distracting from an immersion standpoint that I can never leave the ship(s). Once I'm done with a mission, or a trade route, or ratting, or whatever, if I just want to hang out and chat with corpmates, why do I have to stare at my ship in the hangar the whole time, when there are 50 other people also docked in the same station? This has bothered me for years, but the promise has always been out there that ambulation will happen.
To answer an earlier question, the whole "you pilot in a pod in goo" thing was only a thin sci-fi explanation for why you can't walk around your ship. It's not a limiting factor for getting in or out of the ship, and personally I wouldn't mind if the whole concept disappeared altogether; perhaps in lieu of actually having to hire a 'crew' for your Battleship, since this is far more realistic, (and would probably make piracy a good deal more complex). Of course, then there's the whole 'walking around the ship' thing....
Indeed, there are a lot of things that break immersion, (or "RP" as some have been saying) - the fact that you can't interact with planetary bodies, that the physics is really distorted for spaceflight, that there's an 'up' in space, that flying is actually very much like swimming in other mmo's, (ie: that there's a 'top' and a 'bottom' to a solar system if you fly long enough), etc.
But as distracting as these can be sometimes, the ability to take a walk around the station one day will enhance immersion 100x. If ambulation were to be 'dumped', it would indicate that CCP is not interested in immersion. So I'd cancel and go find another game. However, having read the dev blogs it's clear to me that CCP is very concerned about giving people an immersive experience, given the White Wolf acquisition and their writers doing some new quest texts, etc.
So I certainly applaud the effort, since for better or worse, the game is more than a shoot-em-up based in 'space',(see Jumpgate if you want the space shoot-em-up only).
I appreciate that there are people who write the news stories, and write the Eve Chronicles. Eve is my other life, and I like living there.
