EVE works your CPU hard, not the graphics card. EVE makes little use of the graphics card, and you'll get more performance boosts from buying a better processor than actually getting a better graphics card.
If EVE is causing your system to overheat, then you don't have adequate cooling. I suggest you buy some fans, or seek out a better case so your system is cooled properly.
If your rig can't cope with 100% CPU/GPU use for, lets say, 12 hours - then you really, really need to think about a better cooling solution (for your case, processor, and graphics card).
The reason Laptops have issues is because they're honestly not meant for gaming, and are not meant for constant 100% CPU/GPU usage over a long period of time. They get very hot, and have poor cooling, and so tend to overheat quite regularly (you might find that it gets very, very hot if you put it on your lap).
Desktops are no different. Older machines tend to have rubbish cases, with no side vent, and only rely on the PSU (power supply unit) for removing the hot air from the case (my parents computer did this and crashed regularly when trying to run The Sims 2).
1) Make sure your case is ventilated properly (Front/Side intakes, and Top/Rear outakes - EXCLUDING the PSU as a fan). You need atleast one fan at the Front/Side blowing cool air over your system, and one on the Top/Rear sucking out hot air - Circulation is key.
2) Make sure your heatsinks and fans aren't clogged up with dust. My old X1800XT was overheating to 100c+ because of dust on the rear of the heatsink - it couldnt blow air over the heatsink and out the rear.
3) Make sure your system can take being used at 100% CPU/GPU usage for a long period of time. Run benchmarks on a continous loop (3D Mark 05/06 is quite a good pixel-jerker). If your machine is still standing, running stable, without artifacts after 6-12 hours (or even longer if you can manage it). Your system is good enough to run games.
