I will quit if bob won't get a proper punishment!
I will quit if you touch my missiles!
I will quit if the minmatard won't get a boost!
You can always find a thread in which someone is saying they will quit because <insert a random whine>. They come in masses when there is a dev blog on some future changes. Sometimes they involve a personal grudge and sometimes its a group of people trying to convince CCP that they will go bankrupt because their whole alliance is quitting. At the end of the day a lot of people won't quit (or come back soon enough) because they've invested so much time and effort into Eve and the fact that there really isn't anything better out there at the moment.
So, can you remember some big 'I quit' issues over the years? Which one was the one that created the most whineage?

When CCP said skills would no longer train on inactive accounts (don't know if that was ever actually implemented) a bunch of people said they would quit if it was done; only to have it pointed out to them that it was their plan to quit anyway, while their long skills were training. ----------

You are absolutely right - most who post they will quit are just making noise. The folks who will REALLY quit due to this don't bother to post here. I know of 3 players (so far)who have cancelled their renewals. CCP has 1-3 weeks to give these players a reason to stay.
This issue is NOT the same as Nerfing missiles or being a '!' for 8 months. If you REALLY think it is then you are - and I hope this is not to strong - an idiot. I do not call folks names lightly - check my posts and you should find this is the most insulting thing I have said to a fellow player.

I didn't bother posting previously on the issue (what can you say in a 100 page thread that hasn't been repeated a dozen times already), but I'm one of those standing back to see how CCP handles this situation in the coming weeks, and it's up to them whether or not my account continues.
Despite the whiners and screamers, and the "constantly-threatening-to-quit"'ers that get the attention I have no doubt that I'm not alone in my feelings.

The quitting threat is often the last action a player can take. Probably in most cases (when it is a serious personal problem of a player) is the efect of: - intense feeling of unfairness (thus frustration) - being sure that there is no other way that player can solve this problem (or that the problem will not be solved at all) - look at last events and the quitting menaces atm.
As a menace it is of course silly, but it is actually an important personal signal that someone feels hopeless about some situations or problems. No need to make fun about, better to give a helping hand.

Edited by: fruit cakes on 12/02/2007 15:34:56 you're right people saying they will quit bla bla are just making noise, the truth of the matter is the player base is actually rising, i dont know if anyone noticed but yesterday peak time i noticed over 32k players on eve although i dont agree with whats happened over the past few months i doubt i will ever quit it is still a great game good and bad included. CCP is much under scrutiny atm but im sure they will come through if they are true to the game and players, people saying im cancelling my subscription etc are weak they arent even giving a strong enough case to there defence and in RL probably give up on things they cant handle way too easy, If you have the strength to see it through the rough times (which is where its at atm) you will come out stronger and better at the other end. I would like to see more positive feedback to fix issues as opposed to people saying fix this or i quit its just stupid and people wont listen to them sort of remarks

Eve is not much about keeping users. CCP said before the average time people spend ingame is about 7 months. Which means that in order to thrive, CCP needs to continue attracting new players. Now with the bad publicity, that is the place where CCP is most vulnerable. Game that gets extremely bad reviews is not likely to pick up many new players.

With some though I guess a lot of us do hope that the "I quite because ...." actualy does lead to the player quiting as most of the time it is nothing more then short sightedness from the player in question.
I have to say the missile one was by far the most fun. Though the tracking and double MWD nerfs would come quite close.

There arent exact numbers, but less than 20% of subscribers has more than one account which means 80% or more has a single account. Roughly it means at least 128k of the accounts are individual subscribers, probably a bit more.

The case now can always be made when CCP moves to ban someone for an exploit that "one of your own did it". Sure it's privately owned and operated, but now we know for sure that cheating is tolerable under particular circumstances, and if you're not in the inner circle, you're out of the game. Thanks for letting us know that now.
Freaking creator of the game, personally helping to pave the way for an alliance is definitely deus ex machina no matter how you slice it.
Joke's on me for joining EVE without realizing this. I applaud you for taking the money you got out of me, bravo:

Ketrin I just do not care anymore and here is why:
There is proof that certain BoB members broke the EULA (and even an admission in DBP's case) and yet they were never punished. Ironically, people are being punished NOW for even asking about it. (Sir Molle published K's RL info, Dianobolic made RL threats about K, DBP Preacher admitted to trying to buy an account from a friend--all against the EULA. The same EULA that CCP has used to ban people for far less--that's just what's been proven).
I am SICK of that.

Your figure is based on an assumption that those with more than 1 account will have 2. While not impossible, from personal experience with ASCN as well as seeing the figures for BoB for example, I think you are underestimating the number of accounts being third+ accounts, and thus overestimating the number of individual account holders.
Let me give you an example.
Say you have 200k accounts. 100k of them are 1 person 1 account. 1 guy has the other 100k accounts. You will have 99.999% of people only having one account, and yet still 50% of accounts being held by multiple account holders.
Personally, I think that once people have set the step to take a second account, a third and 4th are not far off.

I would imagine that there is a 'human being' attached to each account though regardless of how it is paid for.

It can be read in: 200K subscirbers, 20% are multiple accounts, so 160K single account subscribed (and 160K subscribers), and 40K multiple accounts (at an average ot 4 accounts/person, another 10K subscribers).
BTW, for the whine about bans, as CCP don't give informations on bans and for sure the involved alliances will not give info on the number of people eventually banned, you don't know if someone has been banned. And K has commited RL felonies, and that give reasons to ban him, indipently from putting RL info in forum or not.

One big "I quit" wave was back in 2006 when Cheyenne Shadowborn said she'd quit. I vividly remember about half of the subscribers saying "then I quit, too" and one guy asking for sleeping pills. It was the Take That disbanding allover again --

I'm so sick and tired of the tinfoil hattery.
I was accused of being in BoB or being a lackey of BoB simply because I said I was satisfied with CCP's official response. I don't even like BoB. The dev's cheating was so incredibly profoundly lame it hurts my brain how someone could be such a loser.
But I said it before and I'll say it again: Some people will never be satisfied.
The official response couldn't get more eloquent or more fair. Then people are like "Cyvok's titan got TELEPORTED so they could kill it in the war!"
Dear god wtf?

There arent exact numbers, but less than 20% of subscribers has more than one account which means 80% or more has a single account. Roughly it means at least 128k of the accounts are individual subscribers, probably a bit more.
Intresting, will that blows out of the water the posts that asked plyers how many accounts they had and it showed (at least for the forum warriors) that the average was 2.6 accounts per person. Hemm that means that if only 20% the players have multiple accounts and 80% have 1 account then you have to adjust those with multiple accounts up by reducing and compensating for the number of single account holders and you get.... OMG there is 1 player out the with 120k accounts.....
Say can you tell the average time spent in EVE per day? Last night there was 10k players on and at peak there is about 30k+, if there are truly 25% of the subscribers on at peak then how long did they play? If you have 100 people at your job but only see 25 at any time of the day then that would mean that they are only at work 14 hours a day and that when one leaves the next starts.... WTH? If there were 100k active accounts there should be at least 1 day that 50% (50k) players were on even with the overlaping time zones. The flip side is also true, if you see accounts go off line at the exact time (within a few min) it could be sumized that it was just people with the same schedules, however is more likly that if 4 or more account offlining at the same time was 1 person logging off.
As to the OP, people quit for verious reasions. I have quit EVE 4 times not because of changes but because of issues like the recent (but not unique) one. People quiting are voting with their feet. I cancled several of my accounts when Kali was released without Reverse Enginnering which was the only reasion I had come back after the last time. Now while you my think that something is whinage those that do quit are doing so for good reasions ITHO. In my case the accounts were cancled because I don't like being lied too, nor do I approve of using bait and switch techniques.
So to those that actually quit for what ever reasion I applaud them for sticking to their convictions, for those that just say they are, well go ahead and quit and don't worry when you come back 6 months or years later don't worry because as it has been shown recently nothing has really changed since EVE started.

a) There are plenty of whining posts about omg BoB is haxxing and node crashed my titan assembly line that have not been locked.
b) They said a hundred times to post in the official thread about it. Douches still keep making new topics because. I dunno. They're douches.
c) As much as you want to whine about how BoB hacked your brain, can you really blame CCP for leaving a few threads that say "Eve doesn't suck and i'm not leaving" in their own forums? Have you seen the number of negative threads they leave open?
d) You'll never be satisfied.

My calculations based on a dev post a month ago that said less than 25% (instead of 20%) and two polling threads (one here and one att mmorpg.com) about how many acount people have gave me around 3-3.5 acounts per multi acount player and just above 100k unique subscribers.
If we use less than 20% instead of 25% it should land around 110-115k unique players. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

I don't make idle threats, and I don't have any delusions that it will be a big difference to the CCP bottomline, but when I said I would quit over "the incident" I followed through on it. So did 5 other people I brought into the game, accounting for 17 accounts in total. We have had bad experiences in way way back in the past (Trade wars 2002 was a good one for admins to exploit), Counterstrike, ect, and cannot and will not tolerate a rigged table.

You sure about that? ^_^
Generally about 25% of subscribers are online during peak hours, we have about 160k subscriptions and PCU of about 35k, so it seems pretty normal, at about 20% if I'm not wrong.
Last time I heard EVE had 175k subscribers. --- Mandatory disclaimer: These are my thoughts, not my corps/alliances. ---

What i meant to say about server population is that the CCP payment model encourages people to subscribe for longer chunks of time in one payment to receive a discounted per month cost.
The server population doesn't reflect the number of people who have cancelled the payment for another chunk of evetime, it could take up to a year before all those folks who have cancelled are unable to log in to the server. A lot of alts are fueled by the funny money GameTimeCards, so it's unknowable how many of those will cease subscribing until they're gone.
So, while we're being graced with statistical info about the subscriber base... how many people cancelled their account in the last month with "omg hax" or similar as the feedback?

I wont quit my job even if the company I work for has been REPEATEDLY discriminating against black, yellow, brown... hell.. white "blue-eyed" people and wont change policy by hiding it.
I wont quit from my government even if the corrupted 'dictator' decide that military budget is more important than health or education budget.... since defence against 'rogue' country or maintaining power is more important.
I wont quit life even if I am dying of terminal degenerative disease and suffering like hell... and there is no coming back to 'normal' even if a cure is found and financially ruining my family...
I wont quit anything since I dont have a sence of morality/fairness or just being plain narrow-minded... quiting is for losers they say...
I wont quit Eve even if allegations for dev misconduct has been proven true and the devs are silencing this matter... AND allowing this thread when we are 'know' they will delete any related threatening posts...
Note:
I do realise that the RL examples i used can NOT (EMPHASISING """NOT""") be correlated with a GAME... but this is how i feel about these posts about quiting or not disregarding the feeling/opinions of others and making a joke out of it... A lot of people are unhappy for many reasons... who are you to say its insignificant???

Ah so this is being a sore loser? Interesting opinion there.
It comes across as a whitewash, and with all the negative publicity this is generating for EVE, do you seriously think that prospective new subscribers are going to feel like paying money for that?

Eve doesn't generally notice people unsubscribing because it has a monopoly on both space MMOGs and PvP oriented MMOGs. But that doesn't mean that stupid decisions don't hurt the game. Because they get people ****ed off and they start looking at other options. And once a good competition is out, such hated but still played games usually collapse horribly.
Just look what happened to DAoC. The devs treated everyone like crap, but subscriber numbers remained stable. Then WoW came out and so many people left and never came back that the producers stopped releasing subscriber numbers from then on. 3 Months later servers which used to have 3000 people on maybe had 500 left.
Eve is threatened by the same exodus as soon as it doesn't have a monopoly anymore.

I know a number of people funding multiple accounts without paying a penny in real currency for as many as 8 accounts..

CCP doesnt want eve to die... they need the money to keep rolling in until they can get white wolf to pick up the phone, ever since the dev scandal (omfg i said it! ima getting banned now!! ) they have been bringing white wolf flowers and chocolate and ringing at all times day and night
The game they are working on sounds sweet.. anyone who has played Bloodlines knows white wolf will deliver massively, and bobdevs aside, eve is awesome for at least your first year or so...
When the new game hits eve will be on its last legs methinks... i know it doesnt seem like you could just leave your char and stuff but look at how many other games have bitten the dust... CCP is ready for that eventuality.
