Does anyone know, from experience, what the optimal ME for a rig bpo is? I don't want to waste research time on needless high ME figures.
Is there some formula that allows me to work this out?
Cheers, in advance.

I threw a bunch in for ME to see what I could get. 100 ME is a 10% reduction in material costs. You will likely hit the 10% mark far before 100 runs, but with a 15-30 day backlog on all ME slots, I might as well just put it in for 100.

Higest material cost (number of gadgets), divided by 5 and rounded up.
On rig BPO's yields you usually number from 20 to 33 for 'perfect' cost. And thats hardly a month, more like up to 3 days.

I've been researching rig BPO's regularly for sale in sets at perfect ME. To determine what ME level I should research each one to I have been using the MLCalc program. From what I have seen so far 'Perfect ME' (zero waste) for most rigs ranges from 8 to 22 with a few exceptions. Most of the exceptions although requiring a ME of 30+ for zero waste can be built for 'minimal waste' (just 1 or 2 units of salvage wasted) by researching to around ME15.
I have also been building rigs for sale using my researched BPO's and have so far not wasted any parts which gives me confidence that MLCalc is giving accurate results.

Have you ever considered that this could be part of the reason for the backlog in the first place?

What a sad waste of a good ME slot. :(

Agree...empire slots are full of noobs jobs thinking their iron S BPO must be researched at ME100 I bet.

Edited by: Torhoff on 13/02/2007 12:26:01 Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of researching the bpos to ME15 so I wasn't too far off.
I was not aware of the MCalc utility, so I shall certainly put that to good use :)
Max - thanks for the heads up regarding your list. Nice work.
Thanks again all.

Actually, no. since the backlog has existed since about day 20 of the game.... Even through the changes that CCP did to the research slots a few years ago, Empire research has been fairly tight. With the advent of "invention", lots more are getting ME/PE up on their BPOs for the best return on invented BPC's also.
When I'm looking at a 20 day delay before starting the run, the difference between 25 runs, and 100 runs is negligable. Granted, in the aggregate, it will add up.
Believe me, if I had the free capital, I'd have a research POS up. I'd already be done with the new prints, and be making copies for sale by now.

If you say so...
(That's just me trying to be sarcastic )
You should kick the ones who claims that 20 is the magic number in the behind. Check these threads for some enlightenment: The Mystery of ME, PE and Perfect ME MLCalc -----

i do mine to ME30 and get 0% Waste. It takes about 2d and 8h to get them up to ME30 (on a empire POS).

This man speaks the truth. Of particular note because (alarmingly) some people don't seem to realize this:
highest component count / 1.1 (Base wastage factor of BPO) / 5 and round down = perfect ME. Multiplying the two fractions is how this number 5.5 was arrived at. This only applies to BPO's with a bwf of 1.1, which is the vast majority of BPOs, BUT NOT ALL OF THEM. Some have a different bwf and this affects what your division needs to be.
Krav
P.S. All rig bpo's have a bwf of 1.1 =====

I confess, I have a few ammo BPOs that are researched to 1080... There really should be a warning when you throw an ammo BPO in for 30 days...
