Since Eve started in 2003 there have been two leaders of the Amarr Empire. Each of their periods of rule have been followed by periods of time where the Empire has not had a head of state.
Emperor Heideran VII ruled from launch day (6th May 2003 or thereabouts) until his death on 17th September 2003 - a total of one hundred and twenty-eight days.
His successor, Doriam II was crowned on the 29th November 2003 - seventy-two days later.
Unfortunately, Doriam II was assassinated on 5th July 2005, and so his rule lasted for five hundred and eighty-four days.
Since his assassination, five hundred and eighty-nine days have passed. That's right, the Empire has been without a head of state for longer the reign of the previous incumbent.
To make matters worse, we've still not heard a sausage about the rules of succession for the next Emperor, there's been no news on the hunt for the assassin for well over a year, and no news on who the new Sarum heir will be since Jamyl Sarum's pod went pop on 29th November 2003.
Pull your socks up, CCP, some of us are starting to think that maybe you don't care about the backstory.

Wow I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers that campaign. Funny times :)
With regards to the OP, hopefully we can get some clarification from CCP on this. Is advancing the Amarr Storyline the job of volunteers or content developers at CCP? We all know Aurora is understaffed, but at this point I am certain that even the Amarr RP community would be happy with a simple news announcement regarding the new emperor and Sarum heir (please let it be another hot chick) without all the effort of a grand event. Hopefully CCP can quickly plug this hole and move on. Also, lets not forget about Midular either, I'm sure there is a bullet with her name on it! ----

Doriam was a false Emperor not chosen by God who came to power because of a gallentean influenced succession. God showed no mercy and punished him.
The Amarr Empire slowly realizes that it would be its downfall if they would continue with this blasphemy. That's why you will not see a new Emperor soon. Let's not forget the incompetent Heideran who lost the wars against Khanid, the Jove, even against the primitive minmatar rebels. Once the Empire eradicates all bad influence from Heideran such as the foolish Pax Amarria or the non true amarrian Tash-Murkon family, then we might see God deliver Khanid II from his heavy burden. Then we Amarr might be worthy getting a new Emperor and a new glorious future for a united Amarr Empire.

Except of course that CCP don't seem to care any more about writing stuff about any of the major NPCs in Eve - so they won't be killing off Khanid any time soon.

According to the latest or one of the latest dev blogs there will be plenty stuff coming soon. I admit factional warfare, and therefore the stories surrounding FW, are on hold because of obvious reasons. I also admit I have heard the word 'soon' more than once before. Nevertheless the long time without an Emperor makes perfect sense from my point of view.

And what about the long time without a Sarum heir? What about the long time without any news on Insorum? What about the long time without anyone bothering to investigate the circumstances surrounding Doriam's death?

Prime fiction (the major plot lines) has always been tightly controlled by CCP directly, Aurora operate under some sort of restrictions on how far reaching their stories can be.
The Tetrimon was probably the major exception to date, it was the Aurora flagship project. I seriously doubt that Aurora would be allowed to spear head the next Amarr ascension but they would probably be enlisted to support.
Would be nice to see some developments on this, its been silent a long time.

Things are never as simple as they seem. Im not going to spell it out to you, as that would ruin the future arcs we are going to run, but if you think about things objectively you can come to realize some possible truths here.

My big concern here though is that now that FW has been shunted back to Kali 3, does that mean that we'll have to wait even longer for these things to be resolved?

I think we all agree that a lot of arcs need an end.
Other arcs can and should be open ended. The insorium arc is one of those who could reappear in 2 years.
I do have a somewhat new theory about what's going on inside house Sarum but that's one of those conspiracy theories...
Investigation of Doriam's death? Who cares? I am glad he is gone. I think most Holders within the Amarr Empire share this opinion.

Fair enough, but the problem is that people will have a hard time believing that even with their tinfoil hats on. I think the gist of it is that for most of us the Eve universe seems frozen, at least unless something is specifically happening on the event front. For example, while the Republic feels like it is buzzing with activity at the moment, we don't really see anything happening in the Empire - no factions seem to be using the emperor's absence to their advantage, no-one is wheeling'n'dealing ..
No doubt all that is indeed happening somewhere in there and no, before you say it, just saying that it's not happening out in the open where we could see it isn't good enough. Even if the actual intrigues are hidden, there should be ripple effects and small hints everywhere. So, I'm not often one for moaning without a little in the way of encouragement or advice. I think what would help would be a more steady stream of news articles from all the empires, featuring just really small tid-bits relating to some extant or upcoming plotlines. They could really be small, one paragraph type stuff. That does not represent a huge amount of work and would do wonders for making the empires feel alive, rather than static.

I think people are mostly thinking that the Amarr Emperor has gone the same way as the Gallente President- hear nothing about it for years, then it gets concluded with little ado (and a barely disguised "sorry that took so long" in the RP news announcement). I've been playing since October 2005, and I've never seen a major prime fiction event, like I'm told used to happen back in the days of presidential candidates and imperial championships. 'Tis a bit sad, really. --------

Fair enough, I don't think anyone wants to know details in advance, they just want to avoid what I call "game module plot syndrome."
As in, the sort of stuff rpg modules which are full of info, backstory, plots, backstabbing and other shennanigans, stuff which is great for the GM to read and the stuff that makes the arc as a whole seem alive and worthwhile. Only the players never get to find out about any of it because it is all in the "GM eyes only" section and isn't mentioned anywhere else, which renders the exercise a somewhat futile waste of time for everyone involved except the GM, who doesn't catch on because to him things make sense.
Again, just to be clear, I'm not saying that is what is happening, merely that is what I hope doesn't happen.

I can buy that the Emperor hasnt been replaced for perfectly acceptable IC reasons.
What I cannot buy is that there would be utter silence from all the involved parties for almost two years.
The aurora events side of things is fine, they have if anything picked up much of the slack over the last years, but the utter silence from effectively every major character is the single most damageing thing to the backstory of EVE.
And the simple fact is that it happens in every single major arc.
Its not events that are lacking, its basic coverage of the 'important' people of EVE that is utterly lacking.
What were the heirs public responces to the death of the Emperor? If the answer is silence then why arent the non-Amarrian media commenting on the silence from the heirs? Their silence wouldnt get ignored by the press. What kindof spin campaigns are being waged to keep the populace from worrying? What are the random priests saying?
Or in non-Amarrian stuff: What was midular or Foritan's last 'state of the union' style speech like?
What is the status of the Ammatar-Matari war, its supposedly been raging for the last few years, but not a peep about a victory here or there.
You, in essence, need to make the world live, and the way to do that is not so much RP events (though the ones done by aurora now are great) but rather short but common news reports about a little bit of everything.
Give us maybe a hundred words a week. It doesn't have to be major news, just something to say that the world is living and breathing and surviving.
A comment about x holder lord. A promotional bit for x product. A short comment on the state of the market. Which Famous gallentean celebrities are sleeping together. Random speculation about the course things are taking. Random conspiracy theories. Anything really. IT doesnt all have to even be 'true' IC, just the kindof stuff a pod pilot would hear every day when he checks the news.
Right now its "Major news story... nothing for weeks/months/years... another major news story." Which is rather unimmersive to say the least. Make that "Major news story, random small stuff, a comment or two about said major news story, another major news story." And you will be able to have your long plot arc... without leaving everyone with pretty much nothing for the months in between.
Anyhow, I recognize that this is not something that is easy to have appear out of nowhere, and I understand we are unlikely, at best, to see the kind of coverage. (Im really talking a minimum of a couple short (Ie one or two paragraphs) articles a week) But it really is what would need to happen to avoid this kind of problem. You cant have realisticly timed events. After all, a two year interegnum isnt actually too long to believe, but a two year interregnum with nothing but silence from involved parties is more than pushing it.
Aurora is doing awesome right now, so the in game event side of things is covered. And more chronicles are always a good thing to see, but they aren't really something our character sees. (And the most recent was was quite excellent) Give us enough little news reports to make the world feel alive and I would be happy with any delay. (Something I have been saying this consistently for the last 2 years :P)
Oh and all that said, you are still doing better than any other MMO I have seen with this stuff.

Well, as Gnauton has stated the Dynamics content team that is forming is only a relatively recent phenomena within CCP. Aurora will, and always will do, most of the work with events and they have done a great job.
So a plan was made when we were formed and we are currently running along it, its obviously not set in stone and all that lovely stuff.
As regards the news, im afraid that is not my area but we can discuss it and see what can happen on that front. We are constantly reviewing these things and trying to get more resources. However, writing a news piece is not simply a matter of putting a few words on a bit of paper and sticking them up.
But one of the main reasons the Minmatar stuff has blown up lately is the players taking things and running forward with them.
Ill come back to this later, need to go get my hair chopped, its starting to attack people.

Why? I realize that you can't have the CCP Janitor write up a nice piece about a new Emperor being crowned, and then have him just slap it up. But what Gaven mentioned - just stupid, random bits of news, just to make the world of EVE seem more.. real, I can't imagine it'd take all that much time for review/et cetera.
I used to play on a text-based Cyberpunk game; it was perhaps the most immersive game that has existed on the Intarweb(tm). They did this - post news articles often. The articles didn't even have to affect players in the slightest; but it gave players something to talk about and made the game world seem more real.
Right now, we have a situation where it's effectively, "Hey, what's happening?" "Same old, same old. The Matari are still rebellious scum, and we still have no Emperor." Everything falls back to that, because there's not much else to talk about. Can't even get news about the latest depraved Gallente holoflick, that we might decry the immorality of it.

The problem I see here is that many players are thinking to themselves...why not? I think we'd all like to see every 6-10 days a short bit of random rp gossip appear on the login screen.
Gallente Holo superstar Maggie McDoo has been arrested in a Public lavatory for unclear but naughty reasons. Her fans across the galaxy are jolly well put out. Filiming of "It came from Matar part 3" has been put on indefinite hold.
Que players hitting the IGS to wail and gnash their teeth that they may never see part 3. Amarrians wail and gnash their teeth over this Gallente immorality. Brutors concede that Maggie is indeed "hawt".

Yes, but the point is that players need to feed off something, no new stimuli for over a year and you start running out things to RP with. The recent Defiants story gave us minnies a whole ton of stuff to bounce off which we did and its allowed for other groups to bounce of our bouncings.
There is nothing much to say on the Amarr throne topic that wasn't said months ago, hence the dilemma. Although if I was an Amarrian right now I'd probably look hard at kicking up an IC fuss at the ongoing silence. Using Rodj's numbers would be a good start.

Well, yeah that has to be the reason ICly.
But right now there isn't even really enough coverage to get the feeling that there is something big going on across. Its just a void rather than a massive intriguing mystery.
And stuff like Wanoah's little bit are exactly what Im talking about. Some more elaborate ones, maybe some less elaborate ones, but thats the level of thing I'm talking about for the basics.
Edit: and we tend to do that about once every six months... so its probably that time again. Last time was on the anniversary. Got aurora out with it, even.

From a non-RP point of view, this looks like an obvious tie-in to the upcoming Factional Warfare.

Pull your socks up, CCP, some of us are starting to think that maybe you don't care about the backstory.
its not that they dont care about the backstory, its just that anything with "amarr" in it is on autoignore.

Regarding us making IC pleas for progress or information on the IGS, we've done it on more than one occasion.

Edited by: Gaven Lok''ri on 15/02/2007 20:13:08 Not quite fair there Rodj... we did get Grand Master Horm to come to Archies rally and got a new bit of scripture out of the deal. :P
The biggest thing is that when you do something like that rally you feel like something is off, partly because its not exactly the Amarrian character's place to talk back to these bigwigs... and not knowing any of the stakes involved (or even haveing a remote clue on the stakes) feels bloody risky from an IC standpoint.

I understand your frustration, but I have really taken heart of late in seeing how the revamped AURORA & fledgling CCP events people are conducting things - demonstrated by the resurrected Tetrimon arc (still angry at that one's ignominious end ) and the recent Defiants/Muritor arc and associated news.
I think that these things and Abraxas stepping up to the plate and knocking out chronicles on a regular basis really show that they have been listening to us. Sooner or later, you realise that you need this sort of thing to sustain longevity as a player. It takes a certain amount of investment in the world to keep playing for years instead of drifting away to something else. All the tools and the PvP starts to become a little bit empty unless you feel that you are helping to make a mark on the world, and involvement in world events helps this.

Now to be fair, the Elections-That-Shalt-Not-Be-Named were put off just as long- and WE didn't even get a proper resolution to it! Atleast theres hope for your head of state

In all seriousness, Ginger, having the Amarrians to wait for so long is a tad bit cruel. Hurry your zombie fanbois up and get them to start on the arcs already! ---------------

The torture series has now finished.
The most recent chronicle is about an Amarrian religious order.

Torture is something every state has done and will most likly carry and doing in some form or another. What is intresting is that the methords usd in the chronicles are from what i gather all done against non-pod pilots, imagine the "Fun" they could have with a pod pilot. Just feeding in false information into the brain, which would be acccpeted as real. |

Edited by: Nachshon on 19/02/2007 21:15:14 Maybe CCP should have a dedicated storyline developer for each race, who could turn this stuff out on a regular basis. Their job would be to not only turn out background info, but to react to current events. You could just grab 4 guys from White Wolf - this calls for roleplaying and backstory expertise, which White Wolf has.

That's a good idea, although it might mean that storylines involving conflict between the races might end up getting put on the back burner.
