Do missions scale depending on the type of vessel one is in?
Like, when I did missions the other day with my Scythe it was a lot more difficult than say when I do them with my Rifter. It was less difficult in the number, type and strength of my enemies. --------------------------------------- Sig for rent... Make offer.. Noob has to make some cash somehow.. |

No.
The mission is set only by agent level. It doesn't care if you do it with a battleship or a frigate.
The reason it seems easier is that a rookie ship is made of paper mache, and the frigate is not.

Think it only goes by lvls and wether your ship can fit through the jumpgates.
I'm still working on lvl 1 missions and they seem the same wether I'm in my Kestrel or my Cormorant

=/ I didn't use the rookie ship, I used a Scythe (cruiser) and was getting pounded on but when I used a Rifter (highest basic level frigate for Minmatar) I did great so thats why I asked. --------------------------------------- Sig for rent... Make offer.. Noob has to make some cash somehow.. |

Edited by: Matalino on 16/02/2007 16:44:17 Depends on the mission you are doing. There are a few factors that could make a cruiser worse than a frigate.
First is signature radius. The Rifter has a radius of 35m, the Scythe has a radius of 100m. Standard light missiles have an explosion radius of 50m. With frigate missiles your Scythe will take 42% more damage than your Rifter. If there are cruisers in the mission, the difference will be even greater.
Second, this difference will also work against if you are using medium guns against frigates. Your guns will have a resolution of 125m, but your targets will have a radius of ~40m. While the medium guns have a base damage 2x that of small guns, the difference in resolution to radius will mean that they are going to do only 2/3's of the effective damage that your small guns were doing.
Edit - and that's before you factor in the Rifters 20% bonus to Small Projectile damage, at Frigate level 4 which you must have if you have also trained Cruisers. The Scythe doesn't get any bonus to damage.

Thanks Matalino, that makes total sense.
I was using much much larger guns than 125MM on my cruiser and I would get really pounded by missiles. --------------------------------------- Sig for rent... Make offer.. Noob has to make some cash somehow.. |

Yes, The Rifter is a great ship.
Another effect of the lack of scaling in missions is how some newcomers will get totally owned by their second or third mission, and come here and ask "why is the third tutorial mission so hard?" What they don't realize is that they had the tough luck of getting one of the harder L1s as their first non-tutorial mission.
Good details for missions are recorded at http://eve-info.com .

Just to make sure that you are clear, a 125MM gun does not have a resolution of 125m.
Medium guns (example 650mm Artillery Cannon I, 220mm Vulcan Autocannon I) have a resolution of 125m. Small guns (such as 250mm Light Artillery Cannon I and 125mm Gatling Autocannon I) have a resolution of 40m.
If the Signature Resolution or Explosion Radius of your weapon is larger than the Signature Radius of your target you will do less damage. If the Signature Resolution or Explosion Radius of your weapon is equal to or smaller than the Signature Radius of your target then you will do full damage.

Gun resolution is basically its accuracy.
So a frigate gun hits somewhere within 40m or where it was pointing, shooting at a target 20m in size means that even if it can track perfectly, and hits its target, due to the fact that the gun is only accurate to within 40m it still has a 50% chance of a miss..

I think your are mis-explaining sig resolution on guns.
If you are using MISSILES... and your explosion radius is greater than the ship size, or they are moving faster than your explosion velocity.. they will take reduced damage. Refer to the missile guide.
if using guns and your sig reso is bigger than their ship's sig reso.. you will hit for the SAME damage. However, you will miss more often.
This is important, because if you have bigger guns and web a guy to very low speed, you can still do full damage. With missiles, you would have to target paint a guy's size up to still do full damage. Different ways to deal with the problem ;)
