There's not that much of a story, really. It's various characters doing various things and having various thoughts. If you know World War II history, the ideas about what happened with non-defeated Japan and Germany are interesting. But it's just worked into the characters' subplots along the way. Like big news stories that might or might not matter to them. I've read a fair amount of Mr. [Censored]'s works, but I had to resort to internet opinions to help get a handle on the bizarre ending of the book.
Amazing that this tripped-out, film noir gritty thing was published in 1962.

Where thinking about real world laws of physics, astronomy and other hard science disciplines were what shaped the story. That kind of went out of style along the way, I guess. But Andy Weir's The Martian from 2014 is equally "hard", science-based sci-fi. So hard and nerdy that I couldn't finish it. Good book, I'm just lazy and not that much of a science nerd.

I heard its name often but don't know what it is about. "Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone harbouring an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress... Huxley's ingenious fantasy of the future sheds a blazing light on the present and is considered to be his most enduring masterpiece." Sounds a lot like Lois Lowry's The Giver. I haven't read that too.
The book and movie are very different, the book is something like 60 short stories in chronological order, there's no 'main plot' as it were but it is outstanding (so is the movie).
I read a bunch of dystopia/utopia books as part of my thesis, BNW was one of them which I had never finished properly after handing my thesis in. It's a fantastic book though, very believable in parts and very unbelievable in other parts. The world of distraction and saturation that Huxley spoke of has largely become real. |

Previously finished Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett after the 7th read through, now starting Going Postal by him as well, 30% done and will probably start over by Sunday.
I've read about 38 of the 41 Discworld books an average of 30-40 times each, although a few I've only read a paltry 3 or 4 times where as some of my favourites are up closer towards a hundred. They're just so much fun. Started reading Pratchett in 2011 and I haven't really stopped except with random breaks for things like The Hunger Games series (about 20 times on average each), The Divergent series (about 20 times on average each again), and The Dark Tower series (about 10 times for Gunslinger alone and I still don't know what's going on in it).

Here you have a name of the author, (he spelled it, then paused for a while). See? This is what they teach you in school, they dont teach how to enjoy book, what it can bring to your life. That's amazing. Yukihiro Takahashi (drummer and songwriter, most known for being a member of the old band YMO) once appeared in one of my dreams. He said something like, "If you want to create something, you don't do it by hoping some brilliant idea to pops into your head from out of nowhere. You do it deciding on your craft, setting a daily schedule for yourself, and working as hard as you can during that scheduled time every day, with no exceptions. You have to work to make yourself more perfect in your skill every day. You must be dedicated and professional, even after you've had some successes and made some money. What are you doing, wasting your time trying to do things as an amateur, when you have an idea and free time? You'll never get anything done that way, and years will pass and all of your ideas will be wasted."

I worked in a public library as a schoolboy - a Saturday job, which left ample time for my studies (or would have done so had I actually been studious). Books everywhere: new books, old books, good books, c**p books. I read the lot.
Fast forward a very long way. For the past 10 years or so I've been completely unable to read novels of any kind. I don't know what happened; it just died. But I am an avid reader of non-fiction, though I'm far more selective than that tousle-headed schoolkid of yesteryear. Currently reading:

Karl Marlantes, Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War Really great, actually my second time reading it. Background: -The author was a USMC 2nd Lt in Vietnam -It took him 30 years to finish the book -It takes place in the mountains near the North Vietnam border, where there were a series of "conventional war" hard battles between regular (not guerilla) troops -The author's next book was autobiographical long essay-like. Inferentially, it explains a lot about the characters in Matterhorn.

They get funnier and more awesome after the third. The second book in the series is the continuation of the first but then the books begin to divide into storylines.I was bored by the third and stopped reading it mid-way.My all-time favorite book is the 5th,Sourcery.
Upon searching on a search engine for 'discworld reading order',these storylines come up:
- Rincewind.
- Death.
- Witches.
- City Watch.
- Wizards.
- Tiffany Aching.
- Moist von Lipwig.
- Discworld cultures.
What I did when I first started reading was reading up to the 8th book and then reading each storyline one by one.

I wrote in a previous post that I'm reading Robert Jordan's The Eye of The World. But I haven't actually dived into it yet. Now I've started reading 5 new books:
1) Foundation - Isaac Asimov 2) Dune - Frank Herbert 3) The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin 4) The Eye of the World - Robert Jordan 5) It - Stephen King
I intend to live forever, or die trying.

I have the Foundation series sitting on my bookshelf atm too.
Have you heard anything I've said?
You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?
That's right.
Had to end sometime.

Currently reading Blindsight, by Peter Watts. Following that I'm starting in on his Rifters trilogy (Starfish, Maelstrom, +ƒehemoth), and have Echopraxia (the follow-on book to Blindsight) on order. |

I got rid of approximately 50 of my physical books since I have them on my Kindle. I just finished reading the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. It was a copy from Gutenberg and it was awfully incomplete. Is this the book which Elon Musk recommends? Maybe BF didn't write it completely. Or maybe Elon Musk meant the biography written by Walter Isaacson. Who knows.
