Something is driving this price up. The supply is not meeting the demand. The market doesn't have the volume it normally does. In the last month it has nearly doubled in price from 28 up to 48-50 now. When you place a buy order, you get .01'd so often that by the time you fulfill it, you've paid more than if you had bought from the sell orders. Jita buy prices are above Amarr sell prices.
Is this the new Goon conspiracy for market manipulation? Or random coincidence? Can't control the trit and pyerite, likewise the high ends are too easily supplied by WHs and nullsec. This middle ground mineral can not be mined easily in bulk, it makes the perfect strangehold chokepoint to raise the price of all T1 goods by 15-17% so far.

Much of the problem would be due to speculators like me. I don't care what you (or anyone) need Mexallon to do. I care only that I can bounce the price to make a ridiculous profit in a matter of hours. Right now, you can successfully bounce the entire Mexallon market over the course of a few hours with few alts in central hubs and about 4 - 5 Billion ISK.
Do you have any idea how trivial that is and how many speculators start feeling the money hairs on the back of their necks tingle when they see enough bouncing? It snowballs faster than you'd believe as the lemmings come pouring in like manna from Heaven to do what I couldn't possibly afford to do in terms of time, effort, and ISK. They take all the risks in the swings and all that's left is profit. There are about a dozen major commodities on the market right now which are similarly trivial to bounce in a similar fashion. Liquid Ozone is another one. Throw a few billion in at the right time and the right place, then watch the fireworks. Profit, rinse, repeat.
Is that clear and simply stated enough for you? Rather than posting every idle question, spend a little time over the course of a few days actually watching how items move in the major markets. |

My guess would be, there's a lot of people out there building ltos and lots of tier 3 BCs. Quite a few of the high research BPO's should about now be comeing out of research and it's time to set those to work. Add to that that the market for mex isn't all that flexible, as it comes from plagio and kernite. Kernite however is also used in level 4 missions, hence it's higher than regular price, so refining this at a loss is a bad idea, meaning that the only people that supply the market with mex is the ones mining plagio. Now, Plagio is found in Minnie and Gallente space, and in gallente space i think people are a little wary of mining, lest some bored goons decide that there's not enough macks to shoot, so go for some belt mining hulks instead.

Only regular Kernite is used for L4 storyline missions, and those storyline missions are now a bit rarer since CCP added other potential storyline missions. The +5% and +10% ores still get refined down into minerals.
While Kernite is the biggest feeder of Mexallon, there's also Pyrox. Both of which are found in Amarr regions. In Minmatar regions, only Plagio contains Mex unless you go to lo-sec (Jaspet) or find a grav site. However, the Minmatar regions are not highly populated and I'm not sure that the Amarr regions are as much as they used to be.
A bit of market speculation, but mostly demand outstripping supply - and supply side hasn't changed course yet to start mining the better ores. |

Pyrox doesn't contain mex, only nox and trit.
and yes I know the 5% and 10%s get refined, however, there's less of that around, and when someone is mining kernite, they would go for the smart option, of mining the regular stuff, which earns them more, unless the price of mex goes up, so the richer ores are worth mining for minerals.
As for minnie space being underpopulated. Possibly, but that only enhances my point of the mex being inflexible to demand.

(It is, however, the 3rd worst source of Mex from all the hi-sec ores. But it's also worth about 139 ISK/m3 at the moment, with Plag at 129 ISK/m3, Kern at 125 ISK/m3 and Veld/Scord at around 98-100 ISK/m3. Lo-sec ores are running 153-166 ISK/m3 range. Pyrox has been the hi-sec darling of the ores for the past few months.
And I think Pyrox was changed a while ago to include Mex/Pye.) |

Main benefit to mining in missions is that it's a /little/ harder to be found.
Someone has to use combat probes to do it, rather than bouncing through the belts, or core probes to find the grav site. So you're less likely to be found by gankers, or other miners. Bit safer to jetcan mine.

Since the start of Crucible, Mexallon prices have skyrocked. Pyerite became more valuable, too.
A) In the past, Pyerite and Mexallon were mostly harvested by means of looting (Mineral Faucet from QEN 2008).
B) In comparison to direct ore mining, the ratio of looted minerals does not change much over time unless the loot-tables are changed.
C) Ores with much Mexallon: 1. Plagioclase , 2. Kernite, 3. Pyroxers
D) Ores with much Pyerite: 1. Scordite, (2. Plagioclase)
E) Crucible's new T3 ships need much more Mexallon than other ships.
F) Think about the Nocxium price peak after the introcduction of the Noctis...
G) If you are interested in a deeper understanding of Eve's mineral prices, you may start here.
The question is, whether there is higher demand for Mexallon and Pyerite (new T3 ships) or less supply because of changes in the loot-tables.
Keep in mind that it's easier to mine Scordite than the other ores mentioned above, have a look how much Mexallon and Pyerite the new T3 ships - and other new (Crucible) constructible objects if you want to be precise - need and it should be clear, that Mexallon prices will behave similar to Nocxium prices one year ago. And yes, after overreacting, the Mexallon price will meet it's new equilibrium on a higher tier than before Crucible.

A bit of market speculation, but mostly demand outstripping supply - and supply side hasn't changed course yet to start mining the better ores.
Interestingly, the Rens Mexallon sell price is currently lower then Jita, meaning that its actually a decent investment to buy up Mex in Minnie space (due to lack of population?) and then haul it to the more populated regions, including Jita. The stock supply itself is alot lower however, so im guessing its not long before it gets spiked too. Hek appears to already be drying up of supply.
I dont know how long the price rise will continue, though the actual movement in the secondary hubs doesnt look to have increased massively in spikes, leading me to believe that it could well be an influx of demand coupled with longer term speculation. Perhaps mineral suppliers are drip feeding the market to artificially increase the price? Either way, it seems like a pretty solid investment to buy up the remaining supplies in secondary hubs and relist either on Jita or locally at a much higher price.
Kinda surprised this hasnt happened already tbh.
My hat is in the ring that Mex could well exceed the 60isk/unit mark and continue to grow in the next few weeks, depending on whether demand remains consistent. Maybe miners will start changing gears though and balance the numbers... Meh |

Minmatar space is a heavy supplier of Plagioclase. But Heimatar (Rens) is not that big of a region (large amount of systems are lo-sec) and Metropolis is even more sparsely populated, so supply is not that great. And Molden Heath is largely a lo-sec region (other then the mission area around Teonusude and a few isolated hi-sec systems).

Yeah, looks like my estimate of 55-60isk/u might have been too grandiose. Mex flittered around the 52isk/u mark and now looks to be in a declining state into the high 40s.
Seeing the sell orders that are up though, I think this is low to medium volume speculators getting out, which means prices may stabilize and even grow more after the speculators who are dumping stock buy back into the market. |

It'd also look that way, if mex prices weren't going to even grow more. Book order distributions are hard to read. I wonder, if anyone has a tool for graphing them.

It did hit the mid 54s a number of times, kept retreating back into the 53s, all the time with high spreads on sells/buys. The drop was quick and sudden, then the spreads tightened quickly. The huge order dumps forced a sudden downward pressure. The tightening spreads pushed many of the speculators out. Mex is at a historic high and nobody wants to get caught with 500 mill units @ 50/ea when it drops back to 33. |
